Is Waverly going to keep their streak alive and get another foreign exchange student/basketball player this year?
Re: Team to beat in SEO
this foreign exchange talk cracks me up...our family is hosting is hosting Miloje, chillicothes "exchange" student....i didnt hear any comments with our last 2 exchange students.....maybe it was because they didnt play sports...Miloje just happened to play basketball, and was recommended to us by the exchange program. they go over what interests your family has and match them up with kids with similar interests....it so happens, he plays basketball, and is very very good.....so what....whether he played any sports or not, we dont care. he wanted to come to the united states to learn our culture, and we are learning about his.....yes , im sure there are some who bring exchange students in for sports, and those i pity......our exchange student knows, its academics first in our household, and sports, and far second.

Im not sure. I probably shouldnt have added them in the conversation. I was just taking into account the exchange student, who was listed at like 6'8" or 6'9", that was on their roster for part of the season last year(might have been the year before). Nothing negative meant by it.sparky wrote:tribe,

Bronc21 u quieted the thread with that one! Hope he's adjusting to our style of basketball over here,I'm sure he's doing fine and heard some good things about him! He looks 6'6/6'7 how tall is he for sure? TrojanDave correction Zach Johnson not Sam(close enough though..LOL) In D2 Chillicothe will be hard to handle! Their size alone will be imposing for any team they play this year. Anything less than Columbus will be a disappointment for these Cavs! Go Cavs!!

Re: Team to beat in SEO
boy of summer: I understand your feelings about the issue of "transfers" in today's high school basketball.......I actually am in favor of stricter rules by the OHSAA to make tranferring more difficult......BUT.......the rules should never be so strict that a kid can't transfer at all.
You know how it is in today's world.......families aren't as structured as they used to be......fewer two parent homes which can lead to an unstable home life for a kid.......loss of jobs in a particular area which can cause families to pack up and go elsewhere for work.......I got laid off permanently in Columbus two years ago and relocated to my hometown of Portsmouth.......there are reasons other than sports as to why a kid leaves a particular school......and some of those reasons are unavoidable.
I prefer to see Portsmouth with a "homegrown" team........in fact, in the 40 years I have watched the Trojans, I can count on two hands the number of significant transfers that we have had and yet still have a finger or two left........99% of the kids that have played for PHS have been homegrown Trojans.
Bronc21 brings up a good point........nobody talks about the transfers who don't play sports......and many, many schools get foriegn exchange students........and I can say at Portsmouth that open enrollment is the reason we are a D3 school.......we have LOST many more kids than we have gained.......we have lost 40% of our enrollment since 1990.......but many don't realize that.
I guess for some having a "homogenous" basketball team seems more noble, but it's just not a perfect world.......there's more mobility than ever before in this country, and it's effect on high school sports has had quite an impact.......the bottom line for me is that I still love the game.

Consider this. Since 2000, 13 Southeast District teams have made it to the state final 4. If my info is correct, only 5 of those teams (Whiteoak, Wheelersburg (twice), Piketon, and Chesapeake) have made it without the aid of a transfer or foreign exchange student. The following list is only the transfers that I can remember. There may have been more. I think this shows that if a team wants to reach the highest level, it is imperative that they try to get a transfer to help them get there. It's unfortunate, but it's a reality in today's high school athletics.

I would nominate Sheridan as a darkhorse team in D2. They won 16 ball games last year, lost in the sectional to VC despite leading until the last five seconds. They played the last seven games without their pg and best player. The scary thing is they return every single player that played any sort of role last year and added 6'5 soph guard Matt Freville (plays with Nitro USA in spring ball) who moved back in to the district after moving away a few years ago. They have a good new coach and I think they could suprise some people. They might get a late start though as a long football playoff run looks promising and basically all of them play.
6'2 Sr Anthony Crane-hurt for the last part of last year, 3rd year as a varsity player
6'2 Sr Troy Sweeney-outstanding player
6'3 Sr Cj Myers-Freak athlete
6'3 Jr Jacob Horsley-Avg 17 ppg as a soph
6'6 Sr Josh Busby

6'5 So Matt Freville

You sir, are not telling the whole truth. The foreign exchange program does not hand you a kid based on similar interests; you are often given an array of kids to choose from based on similar interests. And you being such an ardent supporter of Chillicothe Basketball your choice was easy. It was easy to select the 6'8" Serbian kid than the 5'2" Chinese girl who is great at mathematics. That is the problem with the foreign exchange program, according to the OHSAA it suppose to be a random placement. However, there are boosters such as yourself that often manipulate the situation; then compounding the problem people like yourself get on forums like this and pound your chest in a sanctimonious tone. We all are idiots, these placement are random, they just want to learn about our culture, yada, yada, yada, (psst. It is ok that he can dunk a basketball). Go sell your snake oil somewhere else, Mr. 2008 State Champions.bronc21 wrote:this foreign exchange talk cracks me up...our family is hosting is hosting Miloje, chillicothes "exchange" student....i didnt hear any comments with our last 2 exchange students.....maybe it was because they didnt play sports...Miloje just happened to play basketball, and was recommended to us by the exchange program. they go over what interests your family has and match them up with kids with similar interests....it so happens, he plays basketball, and is very very good.....so what....whether he played any sports or not, we dont care. he wanted to come to the united states to learn our culture, and we are learning about his.....yes , im sure there are some who bring exchange students in for sports, and those i pity......our exchange student knows, its academics first in our household, and sports, and far second.

CoyDuke, Chesapeake had a transfer from Rose Hill KY on the team this past year that started. So that only leaves 4 teams without aid of others.

i keep forgetting what an bleep you are.........for your info buddy, the woman from the foundation in arizona contacted my wife and told her who was a good fit for our family....i was at work and she called me and told me this kid was coming aug 7th so he could get comfortable before school started....i didnt know if he played sports or not till i got home...nor did i care. so do not run your mouth on here if you have no knowledge of the situation...and yes my thing says 2008 state champions......cause im proud of my school...get over yourself and your continous negative bs....oh, and i never heard any negativity about our last 2 exchange students...oh, thats right, they didnt play sportshawkeyepierce wrote:You sir, are not telling the whole truth. Re: Team to beat in SEO
Bronc21.....I certainly hope what you're saying regarding Chilli's "exchange students" is true. However, given the Cavs past history with transfers, your argument and its creditability are weak.....at best.
Hawkeye tends to be little abrasive and verbose with his posts, but in this case, I think he is dead on right with his accounts of CHS's influx of "exchange students and transfers" into the boys basketball program of recent past. You can defend that argument all you want, but honestly, you just need to look at the recent history of transfers into the Chilli's program and you will see how disproportionate that district is compared to other school districts in this area.
As an outsider, it's hard to believe that is a coincidence...yet I'm sure you'll have some shallow excuse as how why this is all "above board."

Re: Team to beat in SEO
Bronc, I am not calling you or your family a liar, I said you speak half truths and you were sanctimonious. I am very familiar with the foreign exchange system and have great respect for it. It is wonderful that you have opened your home to foreign exchange students, athletic or non-athletic. And you are right, no ones cares about foreign exchange students who do not bathe in the Friday Night Lights. Which is a greater testament to the corrupt, adulteress affairs that our culture has for sports. However, I have also seen great abuses and manipulations of the foreign exchange program starting in Wellston 10-13 years ago. The point I was making is that those who host tend to make sanctimonious excuses and/or insincerely apologize for their schools sudden gift/happenstance/good fortune for their athletic gains. While whatever his name is, is a great kid and student, you will not apologize for how it greatly upset the competitive balance in the SEOAL or Southeast District Division II in the Cavaliers favor. Therefore, I tend to think about those that have to compete against the unfair balance. Those are often the kids that stay here and raise their own families here; they are the left in the wake of a possible Chillicothe Cavaliers' league, district, regional, or state championship.
With that being said, this begs the sociological questions. What will happen to Chillicothe High School ten years from now? What are the social and economic ramifications from these transfers or foreign exchange students? How does the success of a championship affect the community or worse yet, what happens in the circumstances of un-met expectations? There is a great case study as of right now going on in Wellston. Wellston basketball has not fully return and the community is divided along philosophical and political lines, but worse yet, it is divided along family lines.
Now, you can resort to personal attacks if you want too, it seems that you cannot muster an articulate counter-argument; that is ok, it is not for everybody. And just so you know what the bleep I am; I am an educated man who has seen a lot and experienced many experiences. But what I am for sure, I am not liar and I research before I get on here and jibber-jabber with the uninformed. Bet on it.

Re: Team to beat in SEO
I have recieved several calls from Foreign Exchange placement programs, and they always tell me that this kid plays soccer, or this kid plays basketball. Their job is to place the kids and they are using these as bonuses to try and get families to take kids in. I know there are more kids than there are families, so some go unplaced, but like Hawkeye said, some coaches and boosters actively recruit from an inside list of kids looking for placement. That is flat wrong.
Re: Team to beat in SEO
I always considered High School athletics as the purest form of competition, that is until the middle to late 90,s. Things I have seen, followed, read, some of it makes me sick to my stomach. Not because of the actions of individuals, but only because of the revelation that it will forever be played this way from now till I leave this world
