Players said the ice was in good shape even though it was a little rough. It certainly made for some interesting long passes. Players also said they liked it being at night in a football stadium. Ovechkin even said it had a football feel to it and this coming from a Russian.

I know good ice is a problem in Florida or Texas during the playoffs due to it being so humid.

2012 Winter Classic - were to have it an who should be in it?

The NHL scored big in prime time and at an NFL venue.

The ratings in Canada aren't good but that is because there hasn't been any Canadian teams in the Classic. The NHL needs the US east coast viewer ship for the advertising but needs to consider at least 1 Western conference team next year. The game at Wrigley was a novelty in the fact that the non hockey fan watched it because it was at Wrigley.

If you want to pull in Canadian viewership I would suggest in Toronto at the Skydome. Bring in Detroit as this isn't a bad drive at only 5 hours, spend the night after the game and drive back the next day. I pick Toronto over Montreal because Olympic Stadium blows.

Or

Meadowlands stadium, Rangers vs Canadians. I wouldn't have it a Yankee stadium because this isn't Yankee stadium. The new Yankee stadium, while beautiful, is a knockoff of the house that Ruth built, at least for me. It has no history so that is why I would go with Meadowlands but I can see the rest of the country wanting Yankee stadium.

Or

Want to get totally different, go to Lambeau Field in Green Bay and have a neutral site game between Minnesota and Detriot. Don't know if the Minnesota Wild have enough top name players to attract a national viewership but Detroit does. Plus, the novelty of being at Lambeau Field.

If Dallas was the star filled team with Mike Madano and company from 10 years ago, I would suggest Jerry Jones new stadium in Dallas. No problem making ice there, Jerry's got the money.

Or

Stay in Michigan and have it at the Big House in Ann Arbor with the Red Wings vs Habs.

I really thought it looked wet, like the zamboni had just gone over it, because the light rain was filling cracks and freezing. Also, I think the outside stadium lighting has alot to do with it.

I loved the overhead camera shots, especially from the aircraft.

Pens 8 Lighting 1

Malkin scores 7 seconds into the game as he takes the opening face and drives straight to the net and buries the one timer past Ellis. HE BEAT HIM LIKE A RENTED MULE!!!

Kunitz gets his second career hat trick with a hard slapshot and 2 redirects.

Pens go on to score 5 in the first and they just pound the Bolts into submission.

Pens hit the road and head to Montreal to take on the Habs on Thursday.

Canadiens top Sid-less Penguins 2-1 in shootout Thursday, 01.06.2011 / 10:24 PM Arpon Basu - NHL.com Correspondent MONTREAL – Benoit Pouliot scored the tying goal in regulation and the winner in the shootout as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Sidney Crosby-less Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 on Thursday night.

The Canadiens became the last team in the League to get to the shootout, and Pouliot ended it in style. Chosen as his team’s fifth shooter, he came in for a deke to his forehand before pulling the puck back and sliding it past Brent Johnson with one hand on his stick.

Carey Price then stopped Chris Kunitz to seal the win, one in which he shined with 31 saves to give the Canadiens (22-16-3) their second win in three games (2-0-1).

Arron Asham scored and Johnson made 22 saves for the Penguins (26-12-4), who rested starter Marc-Andre Fleury after he got an 8-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning one night earlier.

Playing without Crosby for the first time this season after he was sent home to be examined for an upper body injury, the burden of offensive leadership fell on the shoulders of Evgeni Malkin.

He didn’t disappoint, generating a number of chances, but he was foiled by Price on every one. Malkin gave the Penguins a scare late in the third period when he went down awkwardly after taking a hit from Scott Gomez. Malkin stayed down for a few moments, tried getting up and went down again, putting no weight on his left leg. He eventually got up and made his way to the bench.

Malkin took another shift in the final minute of regulation and another in overtime but was clearly laboring. Malkin also had the game on his stick as the third shooter in the shootout, and pushed his shot off Price’s pad after the goalie wouldn’t go for his deke.

Malkin missed four games earlier this season with a left knee injury.

It was a strong performance by Price, who’s started to feel some heat in Montreal for a dip in his performance – one that had seen him post a 2-7-1 record with an .870 save percentage in his previous 10 starts.

But he was strong when he needed to be in this one, particularly in the first period after allowing Asham to open the scoring on Pittsburgh’s third shot of the game at 2:14 of the first. Price kept the Canadiens in it as they allowed the Penguins to completely dominate the opening 20 minutes, spending long stretches of it in the Montreal zone.

The Canadiens were also shorthanded, playing their fifth game without defenseman Josh Gorges – who will miss the remainder of the season with a right knee injury – and top shutdown defenseman Roman Hamrlik.

The Canadiens bounced back well from the lethargic first period to take control of the second, getting back in the game when Pouliot scored his eighth of the season at 12:28 with a shot that glanced off Johnson’s shoulder.

With the game tied 1-1 midway through the third period, the Penguins appeared to want to give the Canadiens the lead by taking three overlapping penalties – two of them for delay of game. That gave Montreal 3:46 of power play, with two full minutes at 5-on-3 in the middle of it, but the Canadiens generated only one shot on goal in that span.

The overtime period was no more enthralling, with the Canadiens outshooting the Penguins 1-0 and neither teams generating too many chances. The best one was probably Michael Cammalleri’s, but he missed the far post when he was open in the slot for a shot. :-D

Malkin's goal was one second off the Penguin record to start a game. The record is held by Jean Pronvost at St.Loius in March of 1976.Malkin's was seven seconds and Pronvost's was six.Malkin may have the home record however. They were going to say but didn't.

Pens and Habs played a good game. Pens sent both Crosby and Cooke back to the Burgh so they didn't play and they also rested Fleury but Johnson did very well in the goal for the Pens.

Crosby out for at least a week due to a mild concussion that was suffered in the Winter Classic.

The Wild invades the Burgh on saturday.

Wild 4 Pens 0

Minnesota used a very good neutral zone trap and the Pens had a hard time holding onto the puck as they got shutout from the net.

Next up, the Bruins who have lost 4 out of their last 5. Hopefully, it will be 5 out of their last 6. Bruins lead the league with a 2.2 goals against average.

Pens are 5-5-2 since their 12 game win streak. Pens have the second best goal against average at 2.3

Monday's game is on Versus.

Pens 5 Habs 2

Pens get past the debacle vs the Bruins to snap a 3 game skid. They were 0-2-1 without Crosby.

The Burgh falls behind early in the 2nd 2-1 and then hammers the Habs with, count them, 4 power play goals and leave Montreal with the win even though Crosby is still out.

Pens go to Beantown on saturday and they need to get their minds straight and get past the last 2 games vs the Bruins this year and not let them go on another late 3rd period scoring binge.

Pens 4 Red Wings 1

Pens tip the ice early in their favor as they get a quick score 3 minutes into the game and improve their record to 3-2-1 with Crosby on the sidelines. Pens also get a goal on a penalty shot in the first.

Both the Pens and Red Wings have 62 points.

Pen head to Jersey to battle the Devils on thursday.

Devils 2 Pens 0

Elvis must of stayed in the Burgh with Crosby and Malkin since both of them didn't play. First time in over 400 games that one of these 2 wasn't on the ice for the Pens and it wasn't pretty.

Martin Brodeur was his usually great self vs the Pens.

Good D but no offense.

Hurricane warnings are out for Pittsburgh as the town hosts hockey on saturday night vs Carolina and the AFC title game on sunday. The bars will be packed.

Pens 3 Canes 2

Pens hold on to beat the Canes.

Pens 1 Islanders 0

26 seconds into the game, we drop the gloves and this one looks like a cage match because even when it goes down to the ice their still throwing punches - judges decision goes to the Burgh's Tyler Kennedy in the fight.

Fleury is outstanding in the goal as he has kick saves, glove saves, stick saves and a pipe save as he turns away 29 shots to get his second shutout of the year.

Pens go into the All-Star break with a 2 game win streak, they have won 5 out of their last 6 without Crosby and 3 in a row without Crosby and Geno in the lineup.

Pens are off until Feb 1 when they go to the Garden and take on the Rangers in a national game on Versus.

Pens 4 Rangers 3 in a shootout win.

AHL call up Dustin Jeffery scores the only goal of the shootout in the 7th (give that man an Iron City!) as the Pens start the 2nd half of the season in fine fashion as they rally from 2 goals down to get the SO win.

Pens still without Crosby and Malkin.

Pens also continue their team record 17th straight road game of allowing 3 goals or less.

The Islanders invade the Burgh in a Wednesday night matchup as the Pens continue their schedule of 14 games in 26 days. Ugh.
