PVC: Caldwell(6-1) vs. Fort Frye (5-2)

Post by I drain 3's »

Caldwell comes off another exciting win against Frontier just like last year. Caldwell and Frontier threw the ball all over the field last week, and Caldwell brought home the victory to the tune of 47-40. Both Sayre and Morris had big games for the Redskins. Sayre had over 350 yards passing and 6 total TD's, 5 throwing and the game-winning rush TD. Morris was Sayre's favorite target, hauling in 11 catches for just under 100 yards and 4 TD's. Fort Frye is coming off a easy win against Buckeye Trail, 37-7.

This game has been pegged as a big one in the PVC by a lot of people at the beginning of the year. Caldwell lost a tough one to Fort Frye last year and will be looking for revenge this year. Winner of this game should make a strong case to finish 2nd in the PVC behind Monroe Central. Another big factor is that a loss for Caldwell could essentially put them out of the playoffs. If they have any playoff aspirations, they must win this game.

This should be a great game. Both teams have shown that they can get it done on offense multiple ways. If Caldwell wants to win this game, they have to get it done on the defensive side of the ball. I'm sure the coaches will have them ready for this one. With home-field advantage, i'm taking Caldwell in a close one. Redskins by 8.

Thoughts? Predictions?

Game is at the fairgrounds, and the Redskins are tough to beat there. This may very well be my gamestop for week 8.

I'm interested to see how Caldwell's coaching staff approaches this one. Do they go with their traditional offense they've been running most of the season, or do they go with the new offense they utilized against Frontier? It's tough to say which will be more effective. Might just see a big of both.

As everybody probably can figure out, this is week 1 of the playoffs for Caldwell. Looking at the numbers though a Caldwell win doesn't guarantee them anything. With the loss to Frontier, Fort Frye has no realistic shot at the playoffs, but they can at least build on the future and a win will put them in 2nd place in the PVC (Frontier will finish with 3 conf losses) provided they beat Shenandoah in week 9.

Caldwell is at home and has more on the line. I'm taking Caldwell by 6.

Where's Eastern at? Figured he'd be pumped for this game. Haven't heard much from him since the FF/Frontier game.

Nothin' worse than watchin' a game at that Noble County fairgrounds. Fans sit so far away from the playing field it's a wonder they recognize the uniform numbers. Made my last trip out there 3 years ago and swore off that 'football' field for good. Caldwell wins by 2.

Gotta make due with what they got. Yes the stands are probably farther away than most places, but how many other stadiums in this area put a roof over your head? Plus, if you really wanted to get close to the action, i'm sure there's places to stand along the field, I do it every game.

I've dated myself on here before, and oh boy, here I go again. Yea, you are kind of removed from the action, but like ID3's said, it's the only place that you can go watch a high school game with a roof over your head. That's a plus. Outside of Caldwell, the only place that I will sit to watch a game is Boston field in Buchtel. Great, great place to sit on your can and watch a game   .

One of my earliest memories of HS football is from the fairgrounds in Caldwell. Went to watch my Mom's baby brother play for Woodsfield in 1969, and both Redskin bands were awesome (yes, both teams were the Redskins back then, for you youngsters). Caldwell's band came out and the turned out all of the lights, and did a blacklight show. The bands hats, and pinstripes on the uniforms, lit up under the blacklights, it was awesome!

As long as there's grass on the field, not a bad place to play. You get used to sitting back away from the action a little bit, if you go there enough! ;-)

I've been to some pretty bad places to watch a HS football game, and sorry SS, this is not the worst. I'd rather focus on the positive and name the best places to watch a game, if we want to go down that path.... :122249

Oh, you can watch games under roof at Bellaire, Martins Ferry, and Bridgeport (on the home side).

gotta say, though, it's miserable to be so far from the action at Noble Co. fairgrounds.

I guess this game depends on if FF shows up.When they played Frontier they seemed like they were running through the motions. The coaching has to show up an not be afraid to lose.In games like this they sometimes coach to not get blown out instead of coaching to win.We have a good passing so use it.Also need to get the Lang boys on the outside and use speed.

Caldwell finally showed that they are able to throw the ball last week. And not just to Morris either, several WR's for the Redskins had big games. Should make this offense much more effective, as they shouldn't be a one-dimensional offense anymore.

^^Maybe or maybe Frontier isn't good against the pass. They have a history of giving up loads of passing yards this year including to a Beallsville team that has struggled in most facets of the game.

A little bit of balance is great for any offense, but if I were Caldwell I wouldn't get all pass happy because they had success against Frontier. I read in the other thread Caldwell threw it 40+ times? That's becoming too one-dimensional the other way. I would stick to what got you here. Pound the ball and play-actions.

True, Frontier's pass D probably wasn't all that great, but it's still good to see them start throwing the ball. I'm sure there were some games this year where they could have had success throwing the ball, but there really wasn't a need to. When your running the ball as well as they have been, there really isn't a need to mix it up. Just stick with what's been working.

But against the tougher teams it's good to have that balance. It keeps the D from stacking the box and opens up the run game, or if the D does decide to stack the box, you've got some chemistry between your QB and WR's and they should have openings in the secondary. I'm not expecting them to throw 40+ times against FF, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them throw it between 15-20 times. Just depends on how FF decides to defend Caldwell's offense.

I hate how FF uses the DEs to contain the flats. So unless they blitz a lb they only rush 2 giving the Qb an hr to find the whole in the weak zone....Fort Frye will score with weapons like Watson,Skinner,Klinger, both Langs, and Shon Smith.

I Drain 3's,
I read on another site from a Barnesville fan that claims that the Barnesville/Caldwell game is being moved to week 10. Do you know if that is true? The Buckeye 8 is going to mandatory 4 through 10 scheduling, so Barnesville/Union Local has to move to week 3. That I believe, so I can see Barnesville having week 10 open.

I just can't believe that Caldwell/Shenandoah would not be playing week 10. That's your guy's Super Bowl. It's been a week 10 game as long as I can remember. Any creedence to this?

I haven't heard anything of it yet, but i'll ask around to a couple people who might be more in the know than me and get back to you. I guess it's possible, but I just don't see why Caldwell would agree to do it. Like you said, Caldwell/Shenandoah has been a week 10 game for years. I don't know if they'd consider dropping Barnesville just to keep it week 10 though. I guess it would all depend on who/if Barnesville could be replaced thus allowing Caldwell/Shenandoah to still be week 10. I'll ask around and see what I can find out.
