West Fans - Bring back the BELL!!!

Post by DaRecGuy »

Does anyone know what happened to the bell? It sure would be a nice addition to "The Rock"

I was told it cracked. I would still like to see it moved down to the school or get another one. Ringing the bell was something you always did. West's new field is nice. It just needs more character. I like the helmet, tunnel, and things their doing to the fences. Their doing a good job of trying to build an atmosphere.

Cracked or Not I still say it would ring just fine, I know another prominent bell that is cracked! I am sure if it was located we could get more than enough volunteers to put together the little brick shack. You are so far away from the action at "The Rock" that it takes away from the atmosphere and we need to add a few things to get IT back!!!

I heard from a friend of mine on the west side that it was in someone's garage. I guess this person rang the bell when his son played for West. I thought he said the last name was Bower or Brewar, not sure.

Sorry to say but West and Northwest have the worst atmosphere in the SOC II. Northwest because away fans outnumber the home fans constantly and West because of that dang track, your close to 2 miles away from the action. Anything that would bring some resemblance of a great HS atmosphere to the Rock would be a welcome change.

As a player loved ringing the bell after a victory. Cant believe they let that tradition go away. We would also ring it as a team after Thursday night walk-thru. Somebody needs to get on this and get the bell back.

Bring back the BELL it is a tradition anyone who played for West in the past has memories of. From ringing after victories and on thursdays after walk throughs to ringing it for the last time as a senior you will never forget the Bell. With the last game being played at the old stadium its time to bring back a bit of the past. Lets hear that sweet ring of the bell

Why not have a new one donated to start the tradition over? There must be someone over in town that has a bell. Bells can't be to hard to find. Has anyone asked Taco?

Wasn't the bell moved from Nauvoo to the now middle school? I don't know why the bell tower couldn't be relocated again.

That would be so awesome to have the bell back as for the new stadium I have to agree I dont care to much for it.If you look at all the other new stadiums in scioto and lawrence county we got the shaft.

For some odd reason athletics always get "the shaft" at West :) Look at our wonderful gym that seats half as many as the grade school gym. If anyone has the definite answer as to where the bell is please post so we can go forward with trying to get it put down there. At least then we will have some sort of tradition going on at The Rock!

Loved the bell, and the Siders painted on the hill. Thanks Paul-Paul for the paint. Really would be nice to have the bell back. No way CirasCzar lets us have Siders on anything. I do like the helment, smoke, and the tunnel though. But I also heard the school didn't have anything to do with the helment.

I've said on here before, that it should be illegal to put a track around a football field. Especially at West, should have been out around the soccer field (not many watch either). The worst place to watch a game in the SOC II. So we should do anything that we can to help the atmosphere.

As far as the track goes..I second that statement. Instead of resurfacing it, take it up and put one down out around the soccer field. How much would it cost to move the visitor bleachers in closer? I bet you could find volunteers to help. But I am sure there are a ton of regulations on moving them. I don't see it happening. But people should never let it die. I would keep bringing it up because it definitely takes away from the atmosphere. You turn that into a football stadium and you have a great place to play. The helmet was bought by the parents who had fundraisers. Being that far from the field makes it visititing team friendly.

I would love to see something done with the track also but you have to remember we are talking about west, and athletics are below chorus on the administrations agenda. It's pretty bad when your high scool principle is wearing the opposing schools colors when he attends the game (Minford). Untill someone is gone and we start getting rid of the select few that make decisions nothing is going to change.

Very Interesting Thread. Motivated me to go back through some old interview tapes & notes. The original coach T, for Tipton and a man named Distel, as in "Superintendent who lived and procreated within the District and allowed the various West sports coaches to collectively act as AD's on his behalf" brought the bell with them from the original PWHS "Nauvoo" to the then new PWHS 10th St. locale.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong as I am not from the west side, just simply a true fan of the underdog!
The old West High then became Nauvoo Jr. High.
IMO the two best football stadiums in the history of the SOC both belong to West in the Nauvoo and the 10th St. Locations.
Nauvoo had every seat in the house not more than five rows above the playing field.
10th St. had every seat in the house in the "not more than twenty yards from the field nosebleed" section.
And of course....THEY BOTH HAD THE BELL!.
