Duly Noted: however you have to factor they gave up a 51 yd and 73 yd td runs to Ironton. Oak Hill game they were definately off balance. As to defense playing better sure, but I caution you of using Minford totally as a basis, WBurg came out and hit Minford in the mouth and Minford quit in that game, As for Northwest and Waverly there's no measuring stick there.
O&B Shears is a solid player, but not a game changer, few if any teams have true game changers in this area. Most of the time it's your role players that make the difference

^What else do you do to a Minford team, SOC2 champs, but hit them in the mouth. And to say they just gave up? WOW. And Minford that next week played a healthy West team that Pendelton was getting his make in the first half and it was a close ball game. And Valley was about the same score vs a Pendeltonless team. Give Burg some credit for absolutely manhandling a very good Minford team. And having the opportunity to do the same with the Indians.

I did give Burg credit, So you're insinuating that since Minford and West was close, Valley and West was close and Burg blewout Minford, that Burg will blowout Valley and West. thats that 1+1 = 3 stuff isn't itdemaniac1 wrote:^What else do you do to a Minford team, SOC2 champs, but hit them in the mouth. You said Minford quit. When? Is that a Minford trait? I dont understand how the reigning SOC2 champs quit. Am I missing something?

Yea they quit, especially when Burg went up 17-0, there demeanor changed, heads hangin, not the first time thats happened over the last 20+ years. Anyway Wburg and Valley will be a good game. After actually getting to see Valley play vs West, they present some challenges.
Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
I watched that game from the west band endzone and was really impressed with Yates. But I said before, u didnt have that gap rush from a 4.5 40 speed pendleton shooting the gap at Yates. Dont know what that would do to Yates' demeanor, I am sure he would have shot outside or something, but he had huge gaps to run thru inside the tackles. West was definitley on their heels. Compton tried to do it but without Trevon on the field, he wasnt that effective.
Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
One thing u said for sure, Valley presents some challenges burg. Burg needs to be on their game.
Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
BG77, I was really hesitant for burg to move shank to LB, but its worked out well. He is definitley as tough as Lang and is actually faster LOL. Watching some tape of Ridgewood last yr and their starting QB #5 was also a starting LB vs Minford and Oak hill. Actually, they played 2 Qbs in those games. #12 and #5. #5 was a horse!

Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
I believe one of the keys to Valley's potential success will be in how they withstand Burg's effort "push" so to speak. To clarify what I'm talking about: it seems like every truly sound ball team (regardless of sport) has at least one moment in every game where they simply turn things up a notch from an effort stand-point. Wheelersburg (under coach Barrick) has been tremendous at this (notorious if you are on the opposing team lol) in basketball over the years at the start of the second half. The Pirates football teams over the years have also been very good at this...at digging down deep into that extra place that the truly special teams seem to have, and building a great output from what starts as a solid performance. That "moment", when it occurs, is typically the moment that wins and loses games.
When Pendleton first went down this past Friday night, I looked at those around me and said, "They (West) are gonna stand up and scrap out a tremendous effort that is emotionally driven right now...Valley's gotta be able to withstand it or West is gonna run all over them in spite of Pendleton's loss."
Sure enough, the West kids fought and fought and fought. They played their tails off. They never quit and seemed to get more than the "typical" performance (no matter what level typical might typcially be for the individual) from many of their kids. I was very impressed with that from West's TEAM. At the same time, what seperates this TEAM from Valley from some others was their ability to stay right there and never back down. They were dealing with injuries (I know they didn't lose their best overall player) and adversity as well, which could have been enough for them to fold and not match West's intensity. But, they did match it.
In year's past, Valley has simply failed to match Wheelersburg's intensity. I feel comfortable guaranteeing that this Wheelersburg group will take their game to the next level at some point during Friday's game. The question is, will Valley do the same? You can draw your own conclusions on who you think will win or lose. But, for me, I really just want to see what happens just once when Valley stands up and matches Wheelersburg's intensity.

Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
Should be an excellent hard hitting game. My opinion on some of the things stated above. Shears has really improved and with the O line play is making WB a much better team. Burg could do more in the passing game than they do. Clear coaching edge is to Valley. Valley may have a mental block playing Burg. I am going to this game rather than Minford and Waverly. Holcomb is a good back but not in Shank or Pendleton's category. Yates is the best QB in southern ohio and has a lot of targets. Valley has a much more sophisticated offense than other SOC teams. My prediction is that VAlley gets rid of their mental block and wins a close, hard fought high school game.

Offense - Edge - Even
Defense - Edge - Valley, Burg can sometimes give up big plays
Special Teams - Edge - Burg- Cant kick to shank, and kicker for burg is very good
Coaching - Burg - Burg coaches are very good at gameplanning
Intangibles - Normally I would say Burg beacause Valley has not got the monkey off their back, but I feel these Indians feed off Yates calm presence. So I give edge to Valley being at home, if Valley brings a rocking crowd.
Im pulling for Burg but would not be surprised if Valley takes it.
Go Burg!!!!
This is going to be another great game and I would not be surprized to see either team win. Both have a lot of very talented players. But anyone that compares Shears to Yates has either not seen Yates play, or is just flat out looking throught orange and black glasses. I have seen Shears and the kid is a talented football player, but Yates is on another level. With #14 running the show for the Indians, they can beat any team in Region 19.

^^^^^
Not trying to compare Shears and Yates, just the combo. I have not seen Yates, but I know a lot of people who have and they echo your statements. But Shears is turning into a dual-threat qb and Shank I feel is the best over all back in the county. He can run and catch out of the backfield. Against Waverly he touch the ball about 13 times, 147 rushing, 60 in receiving. Sure im looking through the glasses but both teams have great playmakers so it will come to line play and turnovers and coaching. How can anyone give coaching edge to Valley, when they haven't beat them. Not saying Coach Crabtree is not a good coach but the edge has to go to Burg.
Look for a great injury free game
Go Burg!!

............So, if Valley gets down to the Burg in the first quarter, are they going to "quit" like Minford did?
Give me a break!!!!!! Everyone thought that just because the Burg lost the first two games of the season ( to a 7-1 Ironton team and a 7-1 Oak Hill team no less) that they were in for a long season. Well, IMO against Minford, Burg was the better team. They shut down all that "speed" that Minford had on offense and they completely dominated Minford's defensive line when they had the ball. They will be just as up to the task this week that they were against Minford.
A lot on the line for both teams the next two weeks. Valley is playing to lock up a first round home playoff game. Burg is playing to try and get into the playoffs. I think that if Burg wins one out of the next two, they might be in, so they just need to win both and it might just get them a first round home game.
I won't make a prediction on a score because all predictions are is lockerroom material. Anyone predicting a blowout by either team in this game doesn't know much about HS football game. This could come down to FG to win it.

Wheelersburg Seniors - You've come close the last 2 years, now it's time to step up and get that gold football. It'll take all 18 of you but you can do this! One game at a time. One play at a time.
Playoffs start Friday!

Re: Week 9: Wheelersburg (6-2) SOC (3-0) @ Valley (8-0) SOC
Valley will have to give maximum effort to come away with the win, so much on the line for both teams . Valley didnt really bring there "A" game at West offensively couple of dropped passes that one had six written all over it and the fumble very uncharacteristical of the usually sure handed receivers . No prediction on this game accept that it will be the price of admission and probably standing room only .

If burg can stop valleys qb they will win the game
I like burg in a tight won 24 - 21

You are so right! nobody can compare Shears to Yates this is a FACT!!!
Out of all QBs in the SOC I & SOC II the Shears kid has played a tougher schedule
and has played more ranked teams,(4) going for (5) come Friday, so I wouldn't talk
about Yates on another level just yet, remember we are only playing High School level.
Talk stats? Yates has the numbers no need to argue that point!!
Shears has solid numbers and very well balanced, he has taken the pressure off Shanky
which allows Shank to do what he does best.
Who knows go back to wk 1 & wk 2 and turn this kid lose and Burg may be 8-0 3-0
which the coach's did not do until wk 3 since then 6-2 3-0 ..
He is a legit threat & now has been added to special teams KR,PR also 2nd leading rusher on team, & makes a difference on D.
Truly this game is not about these (2) young men but will involve both, and each may have
something to do with the out come.
I guarantee any coach getting ready to play burg will game plan for the QB
so he must have gotten somebody's attention, and like stated above their really isn't a comparison when adding the (2) facts...
BURG'S PLAYOFF GAME STARTS THIS WEEK!! GO BURG.

Anybody heard from Jungle Cat? He usually never misses an opportunity to talk about how bad Valley is going to get beaten by an SOC II opponent. He must be still trying to swim "the Rock" back over to the folks from the Commonwealth of Kentucky who let him "borrow" it last week.
