Re: IRONTON 20 VS Russell, KY 14 - FINAL
i love the cannon, have not seen it out since the 70's. very good game by both squads tonight, both left it all on the field. ironton's turnover toward the end of the game nearly cost them. but they held on for a hard fought win.saw alot of missed tackles in the second half by the fighting tigers, and d- linemen crashing through but over running the ball carrier.russell had a big ole solid team, i give credit, where credit is due. ironton needs to work on tackling. russell should have a great year this year as well. next up the chillicothe cavaliers, is it already gonna be week 3 , man, oh man it flies by.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers made the most of their possessions as they held off the Russell Red Devils 20-14 Friday night at Tanks Memorial Stadium.
Ironton (2-0) had the ball once in each of the first three quarters and scored each time in building a 20-0 lead.
Russell scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to get within 20-7, but Ironton fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Russell recovered at the Fighting Tigers’ 31. Six plays later Logan Dehoff scored on a 1-yard run and it was 20-14.
Ironton drove to the Russell 39 but was stopped on a fourth-and-one with 4:24 to play.
The Red Devils picked up a first down, but on fourth and 3 at the Ironton 41, Laron Beach stopped Zach Thompson about a yard short of the first down with 1:18 left and Ironton ran out the clock.
The Fighting Tigers had 269 total yards including 217 on the ground. Quarterback Tyler Kratzenberg ran 10 times for 57 yards and was 2 of 2 passing for 52 yards and a 35-yard touchdown strike to Michael Lawless in the third quarter.
Tyler Hager ran for 63 yards and a score while Trevor White had 74 yards and a touchdown as Ironton took a 14-0 first half lead.
Russell (1-1) had 212 total yards as quarterback Googie Hayes ran 17 times for 84 yards and was 3 of 5 passing for 43 yards. Dehoff had 60 yards on 11 carries.
Russell had the game’s only punt in the first quarter

It's been around since the 70s or before. It was recently found somewhere beneath the stadium as was a victory bell that supposedly hasn't been used since the 60s.tk421 wrote:who decided to get that and where did they get it from?
When I was in school, they used to have what they called the "Cannon Crew" who were in charge of setting it off during home games.

Re: IRONTON 20 VS Russell, KY 14 - FINAL
might be one of the strangest games i have ever heard of. i have never heard someone say hey we scored every time we touched the ball except once and never punted, and then had to hold on at the end to win. oh yeah we scored 3 times. i have never heard of a game where you got 4 possessions. it sounds to me like ironton did everything they had to do and 1 mistake puts you in a position to lose the game. give all the credit in the world to russell, they are a very good football team and yeah while i havent seen either russell or ashland play (listened to the game on the radio and tt several knowledgeable friends) i will take russell. i believe they will be more physical. also, give credit to ironton they put themselves in a tough spot with a chance to lose the game and got it done to stop the red devils when it counted. great game for the tigers. just playing in that heat had to be tough on both teams.

There was a cannon (and yes a cannon crew) as far back as the early 70s; perhaps earlier. I assume it's the same one being used now.
The bell dates back to the 60s or earlier. It was "rediscovered" much more recently than that (as tl895 says maybe in the 90s); and at the very least was repainted. It was used for a few seasons and then "disappeared" again; I don't know why.

my dad said the bell was being used when he played in the mid to late 50's.
