West, with 15.95 pts, would not have made the playoffs in Reg 19 last year but finished #5 in Reg 15.
Minford and Burg would have both been traveling week 1 of the playoffs instead of hosting in Reg 15.
They all played a very similar schedules.
Just shows that the top 4 spots are harder to get in Reg15, but it is harder overall to get in for Reg 19.
Understand that when West made that schedule several years ago that they where Division 5, and they picked up division 4 schools
that was larger. The last two years that West played schools of the same size there wasnt any points for playing up. So by going
by points from last year if West was d-5 they would have more points than playing d-4. Your research is not accurate.

It is very close. If nothing else, Burg and Minford would've had more points for being in D5.West Side Pride wrote:Bleeding Red wrote:Actually, after some research:

We"ll see how many points minford gets this year being D-4. But I do hope that they make the playoffs to represent.

Your statement is not accurate. There are is no such thing as points for "playing up". You get the same amount of points for playing a D4 no matter what division you are in. Your computer average has nothing to do with what division you are in.
Re: Minford Falcons 2011
The Formula for the OHSAA playoffs are as follows:
First level points are awarded for wins against opponents
Wins over a Division I school - 6.0 points
Wins over a Division II school - 5.5 points
Wins over a Division III school - 5.0 points
Wins over a Division IV school - 4.5 points
Wins over a Division V school - 4.0 points
Wins over a Division VI school - 3.5 points
Second level points are awarded on defeated opponents wins.
So playing up would be correct if a DIV.IV team schedules DIV.III opponents.
Playoffs are established by not only winning, but how well your opponents did in other contest. If your opponents scheduled teams of higher rank, then said team would have a higher score.
Here's a thought: What would happen if the state had football playoffs resemble the other sports (Basketball, Volleyball, etc) where it wouldn't matter how or who your team had on the schedule.
That would be wild!

You are telling me that if a D5 school beats a D3 school, there are no extra points?

Re: Minford Falcons 2011
There are no "extra" points.
We will use West as the example....This past year West was Division 4. They beat Fairland who was also a D4. They got 4.5 first level points. They also received all Fairland's 1st level points in the form of 2nd level points. If West beats Fairland again this year, they are going to get the same amount of points even though they are going to be Division 5. Hence, there are no extra points.
Say Green (D6) and Jackson (D3) both beat Logan (D1)... Both teams are going to get 6.0 points. It doesn't matter what division they are in.

No...You are not getting the point.
The post that brought all this up was saying that since West was D5 when they made last year's schedule they "scheduled" up. The poster said that since West is moving down, they will get more points for playing the same schedule. This isn't true.

The bottom line is this- if a smaller school beats a larger school (Division wise), they get more points. Yes?

Re: Minford Falcons 2011
My bad, I was wrong on moving back to d-5 and gaining points. That was'nt where I was going anyway. When west made
their schedule they PLAYED UP. Playing schools larger is added points, and better schools is better due to secondary points. By west playing more d-4 schools than d-5 will help in the playoff rankings. Example is west and valley in 2010
both faired at 8-2 records in the regular season, one team made the play-offs and the other team did not.

Still not seeing your point. Both teams did go 8-2 but Valley had a higher point total. If West had been D5 last year they would have finished 11th and not played in week 11.West Side Pride wrote:My bad, I was wrong on moving back to d-5 and gaining points. I am not trying to say that playing larger schools doesn't pay off, but the facts remain that it is better to beat a 6-4 Division 6 team than a 2-8 Division 3 team. Just this past year, if Valley would have beaten a 5-5 Notre Dame team they would have gotten more points than beating 3-7 Logan. Playing bigger schools only matters if they beat other teams.

Re: Minford Falcons 2011
Falcons looked good tonight in 7 on 7 against Notre Dame, Zane Trace, and Northwest. Defense was very tough. Offense seemed focused on the short game which was working well. A couple deep balls were right on the money also. Howard has a nice touch. IMO there was no doubt who was the best team on the field tonight, not even close.

Re: Minford Falcons 2011
I was impressed how the Howard kid threw the ball. He hit just about every one of his 2-10 yard throws and hit some really nice deep balls too.
Gaines made some tricky catches out of the backfield and he looked good in the passing game.
I also thought that Notre Dame looked good, but you are right Ironfalcon, Minford looked much better than any of the other teams in the 7 on 7.
