Re: SEOAL Schelule,Results & Standings
The Marietta/Parkersburg game was very interesting. Parkersburg (ranked #9 in WV big school division) came out on fire and very aggressive and were winning 12-3 and 21-9. If one team was going to win by 40, everyone in the gym would have said it would be Parkersburg. Then Marietta turned up the defensive intensity and the offense followed. They also rebounded the ball much better after the first quarter. Louisa Barton and Lexie Walsh played very scrappy defense that lead the way in the second quarter. Maegan Grosel had a fantastic game - 25 points and was shooting with confidence. Erica Dawson played great with 20 points (with some acrobatic shots) and Amanda Brown had 15 or 16 with a couple threes. All seniors scored and played well on Senior night - Ali Summers in particular rebounded well and got a couple offensive putbacks. As the tide turned, you could see Parkersburg lose their confidence. Shots they were easily making in the first quarter did not fall and their defensive intensity went away. They were frustrated. They used up all their time-outs before the end of the third quarter.
Confidence and momentum are very important in all games, but this game demonstrated it very well. Marietta will need this type of intensity and shooting against their SEOAL foes, especially Logan and Jackson. I bet this loss and the loss to George Washington will be blessings in disguise for Parkersburg, who will learn from these games and improve come tournament time.

In the first quarter, I thought Marietta was in trouble. It just shows you the power of defense! When they put their best press on, the game completely changed! Coach Cozzens mentioned in the paper that he was reluctant to do it that early. I compare what that defense did to what the Warren boys defense did to Marietta in the Warren game, except Coach Maddox only used it a small portion of the time, just enough to gain control of the game. I think the fear of using it too much is the fatigue and foul issues.Mr. Irrelevent wrote:The Marietta/Parkersburg game was very interesting. I think Grosel and Dawson had just about the kind of game you expect from them with maybe a bit better shooting. I thought Summers had the best game I have ever seen her play, and something happened to Brown to make her shooting "snap in"! Three treys and 5/6 at the line! But the defense just overwhelmed getting many turnovers and not letting Parkersburg get it to the good scoring spots they were in the 1st qtr.
Re: SEOAL Schelule,Results & Standings
FYI
Parkersburg being rated number 9 in the large school classification is not that impressive considering they only have 39 schools of that size in the State of West Virginia.
Marietta's division in Ohio is II and their are 199 schools in that group.
West Virginia has 129 schools in the State while Ohio has 798.

Re: SEOAL Schelule,Results & Standings
With Logan's victory at Warren Saturday night, it seems very improbable that they would even slip into a tie for 1st place. They already have beaten Jackson & Warren twice and Marietta away from their home floor. So even if Marietta would happen to beat them at Logan, Marietta would still have to beat their arch rival, Warren, twice and and get a tough victory at Jackson, while Logan would just have to not suffer a terribly improbable upset vs. any of the three bottom teams. I think Jackson has a much better chance to tie for 2nd than Marietta has to tie for 1st!

Re: SEOAL Schelule,Results & Standings
Congratulations to Alexander tonight on their win over Logan 43-33. Alex controlled the tempo of the game and was well deserving of the win. Definitly the better team tonight.
That being said IMO the refing tonight was suspect. The outcome of the game was not determined by it but one ref was decent, one was absent (common with three refs) and one was absolutely lost. The problem here was this guy was the dominant guy. I know that is the way it goes but what bothers me is that this ref does not match the caliber of the girls playing and they deserve better.

Well put. Not at the game so thanks for the update and the editorial comment. Good luck to the girls the remainder of the season.md2020 wrote:Congratulations to Alexander tonight on their win over Logan 43-33. On the schedule, I think Jackson is to play at Warren tomorrow, 2/3/11, aren't they?
