It aggravates me when I hear "Lutz doesn't have a passing game". Lutz is conservative yes, but he has a passing game. His play book is over an inch thick. Go back and look at some of our QB's over the years. Mark Lutz threw the ball for nearly 2000 yards. Craig Pleasant was considered a running QB and threw the ball for over 1500 yards. Jimmy Peyton, Travis Wylie, AJ Edwards, Ryan Guthrie, Mark Snyder, Mark Vass, etc etc etc. When we have QB's that can throw it, we do when we need to. If we do not need to, we run the ball down your throat.

He has ran the ball more over the past decade, but he didn't have the passers in some of the seasons and he didn't need to either. I know the play book, Lutz has more passing plays available than probably 95% of the other coaches in Ohio. He just doesn't use them if he doesn't need to.

People second guessing the winningest coach of all time in the state of Ohio. Like the Guiness commerical. BRILLIANT!

when passing is not mixed in during the game the other team knows exectly whats coming and it makes it easy to game plan for. I remember telling the new lex coaches a few yrs ago that Ironton will run it down your throats. I was told by several of them that even if that turns out to be true nerw lex will score too many points with our spread offense for ironton to beat us. that was certainly true I also remember a 3ot game against Bellaire in athens where Ironton had the ball in ot with 4th and alot to go and ran the tailback up the gut and was stopped for no gain. game over thanks for coming.

A solid schedule and six home games again this year! Excited to see how the Fighting Tigers handle tbe season. Yet again, I believe Coach Lutz will have our Fighting Tigers in the mix for a State title!

The man has 374 lifetime wins in his career. If he were to have thrown the ball more he would be the winningest coach in Ohio...Oh wait a minute he already is, thanks for posting! LOL

Ironton kids know how to run and run block, thats what they learn from day one in biddy leauge. Irontons running attack is more potent than there passing attack every year, i know when Mark Lutz was quaterback passing was more apart of the offense because Ironton had capable recievers with a good quaterback. I dont understand why people think they know what plays should be ran, bottom line if a team doesnt have the personal to run an offensive scheme, there not going to run it!

Despite reading a lot of negativity regarding our schedule, whether they say we will struggle to schedule due to our independant status, or the SEOAL are in allegiance to not schedule us any longer and everyones opinions on how that will affect Ironton to our schedule being soft,!I've read it all. Yet again it looks like a solid schedule with some challenges ahead. Once more it looks like by all accounts that Ironton will absolutely achieve success and Lutzs' Fighting Tigers could see the promise land. That's the expectation, there it is, that's it, Ironton doent go in believing it, or hoping, or predicting, its just the expectation. Now as far as southern Ohio is concerned there's no other program that can say the same, like it or not, we are Southern Ohio. That's not to be smug or boastfull that's just the expectation that's seperates them from us. Ofcourse we are but a dot against the larger schools in Ohio we have also produced teams, (89) that could've played with anybody. So here's the thing, if and when Ironton defys the critics again, ( ashland, 2010), what will it be next?

Play calling is the least of Irontons worries, its not the play its the excution to some extent as well. Plays are all there, Never seen an unprepared to win lutz team, think about it, have you? So honestly some of the what ifs, etcetc.. just seems like nitpickin and fishing for reasons why they can't win and why they are not relevant any longer.

55buckeyes98, they certainly do , it's amazing the schedule they keep year in and out. as small as they are.
i thought sure they'd be d5 this year. i think they missed the cutoff by 2 players.

Here's another reason why Ironton football has been so great over the years.............BJ Hannon.......a great Coach and mentor to so many youth over the years. I had him as a grade school Coach in Football and Basketball at Central grade school about 36 years ago and He's still doing it, a true inspiration.

Hannon has right idea for IYF

B.J. Hannon has probably seen more grade school football games than anyone on the planet.

The octogenarian has spent the majority of his life coaching youth football in Ironton. Unable to move around as well as before, Hannon has shifted his youth football concentration from the sidelines to the administrative side.

Hannon has been the president of the Ironton Youth Football Association and Teen Murnahan Grade School Football League for the past four years. And with all those years of experience comes a library of wisdom.

Hannon understands the competitive drive inside each person, but he also knows that adults must act like adults and understand the purpose of the league and responsibility that comes with coaching the youth.

“I have a meeting and I tell them that first, we have to teach them fundamentals. Second, we have to make this fun,” said Hannon.

“If you’re screaming at them all the time, you should probably step back and ask yourself if what you’re doing is the right thing. We want these kids to continue to play.”

Hannon knows that the intensity level will change once they reach high school. By then, the players will be bigger, stronger and more mature.

“We have to understand that kids are going to make mistakes. They’re just learning and they make mistakes all the time. They’ll even make the same mistakes over and over, but even the pros make mistakes,” said Hannon.

The league has added flag football for youth in kindergarten and first grade.

Talk about kids not knowing what to do when they are 5- or 6-years old.

Hannon is right when he says the competitive drive is always there to win. Vince Lombardi once said, “If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do they keep score?”

Lombardi was right, but only at the higher levels. People remember how the Ironton Fighting Tigers do each year, but most fans have no idea who won the grade school title last year except those who played on the teams involved.

Hannon said the more positive approach among all the coaches has made for a better league.

“I told all our coaches that I was pleased with the way the league was going. It has become what it should be,” said Hannon.

“The coaches all work together. The league is about the kids. We don’t have a lot of problems and anytime we do, we always seem to work it out.”

Now that’s a lot of wisdom talking.

Even us Grovers know B.J. Hannon. I may not be a big Tiger Fan, but I couldn't agree with Mr. Walker more. I have meet B.J. Hannon and even an old Grover like me respectfully calls him Coach. I would like to add to Jimmy's description, "Class Act and Gentleman" :)

Ironton looks strong this year. Not as strong as the last two, but strong none the less. They have some big shoes to fill in graduation as well as other issues (which should not be discussed in this forum). What is the leadership like of this senior class? Is another 8-2 record possible (Tough road games at Alder and Hartley)? Region 15 is wide open and much easier than the past two seasons.
