SHL Schedules, Results, and Standings, Week 2

What a way to start the season out of the gate! The first week saw surprises, heartbreaks, comebacks, blowouts--and Ripley hasn't even played their first game yet.

We’ve got a lot to look forward to in week 2, as league play kicks into gear and the SHL goes up against some state powerhouses.

The Ripley Blue Jays (0-0) get off the couch and tip off their season against Bethel-Tate, the reigning Southern Buckeye champs. Ripley always plays one of the toughest schedules in the SHL, and this should be a game to watch.

Manchester (1-0) showed the boys from Cleremont county they're not afraid to get physical. In their come-from-behind win, the Hounds proved that, like the Goonies, they never say die. On Saturday they make the pilgrimage to the Convo to take on Tri-Valley 2 Champs Eastern Meigs. The Greyhounds might just have the toughest schedule in the SHL this season (with Ironton, South Point, and the stiff SHL competition), as they eye a deep tournament run.

Whiteoak’s defense had a rough time against North Adams in their opener, allowing Drew Dollich to put up 21 points. The Wildcats (0-1) are going to have to find some answers when Norm Pirson’s Oak Hill Oaks come to town. The Oaks have won 19 or more games in the past three seasons, but up until now they’ve been too afraid to take on a team from these Southern Hills (ooooh…maybe that’ll spark some talkback).

SHL trivia: When was the last time the Oaks played an SHL team in the regular season?

Although North Adams (1-1) has a bye this week, it’s worth mentioning that after beating Whiteoak by 15, they fell just shy of a win against Paint Valley. Coach Young is standing on 398 career victories, and after he hits 400 we can officially start referring to him as "The Legendary Dave Young." It's one heck of a milestone, definitely worth noting.

Fayetteville (1-0) raised some eyebrows when they defeated Blanchester (Southern Buckeye Champs from 2009-10). They’re looking to ride that wave into a two-game week against Williamsburg and Eastern Brown.

Eastern Brown (1-0) got stingy at the Zane’s Trace Tip Off Classic. Their defense held Alexander to 28 points and forced an eye-popping 32 turnovers. If they can spread that kind of love across the Southern Hills all year, the gold ball could be within reach.

Lynchburg (0-1) fell just shy of a W against Huntington, and have their home opener this week against Whiteoak.

West Union (0-1) is in a rebuilding year. They’ll have their hands full against Ripley on Friday.

Fairfield (0-2) had a rough week, with senior center Chris Cox falling to injury in the first minutes of their season opener. The Lions dropped their first two games with him out of the lineup, but look to rebound this week against the Peebles Indians. Here’s hoping Cox is off crutches and back on the hardwood soon.

Peebles (1-0) blew Southeastern Ross out of the gym (89-49), went 11 deep on their roster and spread their scoring around. Not a bad start for Coach Arey and his Indians.

On a personal note, PHS grad Luke Scott was killed in Afghanistan Friday. Luke was a friend of mine, and a former student. Like the rest of Peebles, I’m still reeling from the news. I wanted to say how much I appreciate the other teams that observed a moment of silence in his honor.

For all the intensity of our rivalries, Friday night we all stood together to honor my friend, and the values he died for. Thank you.

I think everyone there was wondering the same thing. They didn't take starters out until there was around 4 min left in the 4th qtr. Surprisingly, Western's crowd didn't make much noise about it but maybe they arent violent people. :122249

I wasn't in attendence at the Manchester and Western game, but I did hear from a fan who was that Manchester took their press off after the first quarter and went back into an inside the three man to man defense. I also heard that Combs sat a significant amount of time due to foul trouble in the first half, but also sat a good bit in the second half (along with Blevins) just because of the lead. Just from what I have heard, I wouldn't jump too fast on "accusing" them of running up the score.

how many league championships has peebles won in the last 10-15 years? how many years have they been in the small division?
