greatstone ... Athens lost 4 starters off of last seasons' team (including TVC-Ohio player-of-the-year Cori Butcher) ... They lost their PG, Collin Pfaff, who had been running the point for Athens since the stone age & they also lossed an extremly talented post player in Frank Valentour.

That's tough to replace ... And this team is young - SHARP, SKINNER, MAXSON, STANLEY are all juniors ... Plus, Athens lost its power forward before the season started (junior Mitch Rider) to a shoulder injury that occured in football.

One last side note about Athens ... Not sure if anyone noticed or not - but Athens was playing without senior Ian Dixon Tuesday (who would normally be in the backcourt with Sharp and spearheading the press defense with his quickness and athletic ability.) The Bulldogs also have a 6-foot-1 guard (Orhan Mentese - a foreign exchange student), who has had to miss the first 4 games of the season due to a prior commitment. Mentese & Dixon may not start for Athens - but their size and quickness will help Athens in the rematch in McArthur later this season - especially defensively.

The 6-foot-1 Mentese is a bigger guard, who can handle the ball & pass well, which could help Athens cut down on all its turnovers that plagued the 'Dogs versus VC Tuesday. He also will be a better match-up defensively againt a player like Adam Ward, who is tall & athletic as well. Ian Dixon will definitly help on defense the next time the two teams meet - Skinner could turn him loose and give him one job all night - stick to Lawhead like glue.

The one big problem Athens' still faces ... the game is at Vinton County ... Ouch.

I don't care if you had Bobby Knight, Thad Matta or Tom Izzo - you weren't going to beat Greenfield McClain at the Convo man ... I was their for all the games - Combs did everything he could and so did the players. The Vikings ran up against a 6-foot-5 Division I college basketball player who turned the Convo into his own little playground.

VC was good - heck Greenfield McClain was really good - but when you get into Division II REGIONAL SUCCESS its just a different ballgame man ... When you have the likes of Columbus Desales and or Beechcroft coming down from C-Town - just be greatful your team made it to the Convo and performed as well as it could have. Vinton County did that - and I personally (who don't really know anyone from the Vinton area) was very proud of those kids and so was A LOT OF OTHER area basketball fans.

Although I do have a great deal of respect for Coach Royster and as head coach, Matt Comb's record speaks for itself. But the true brains of the entire outfit is assistant varsity coach Jeff Miller. He is an offensive X's & O's genius, Coach Combs is merely a motivational mechanism to get the kids fired up. Combs & Miller put me in mind of Batman and Robin, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Laverne & Shirley....you get my point.

Together, they make up a great coaching staff and everyone that follows VC basketball should be proud to have these great coaches. I just hope the school district realizes that they got some pretty solid coaches guiding our youth and don't screw it up.

Getting banned from the huddle didn't teach me anything, Francis. As a matter of fact, I've had several usernames banned from this site and I've learned nothing from that, also. Now, I said that I know Matt well, I never said we were friends. Actually, we've been arch enemies ever since he fired me from his staff. :122245 I'm The Joker to his Batman. That's why I have such hard feelings toward him. He also pushes off with his left hand when driving to the basket when playing pick up games. That's an offensive foul in my book. The difference between your and you're is not a hard concept to learn. Are you really hawkeyepierce?

Or if a "John Royster type coach" had coached VC the last 10 years we would be talking about regional tournament success. VC has had state tournament type talent, but have lacked the coaching. It's time to right the wrong and get someone who knows what they're doing in there!

All the "what ifs" can be argued for years.
Here is a solid what if argument: What if VC didnt have all the support that they have in their basketball program at the youth level.
Saying that Combs impact is a waste of time is kinda like saying that Jeff Thacker and Bob Grillo (as with many others) have zero positive impact on some of these kids.
