Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Logan Oh
The Ohio Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State tournament will be held in Logan Ohio this year.In previous years it was known as The Logan Hoop Jam.It will be held the last weekend of February 2011.Entry fee is $95.00.No All Star teams,AAU teams,OYBA or GBA teams allowed to participate in this tournament. Also,no traveling teams.Just rec teams. This tourney last year drew over 70 teams and we look for at least 90 to 100 teams this year. The is divisions for 3rd grade boys and girls,4th grade boys and girls,5th grade boys and girls and 6th grade boys and girls.Anyone attempting to sneak in one of the above teams will forfeit their entry fee and be banned from the tourney. This has become one of the largest youth tournaments in the state. For more information contact Mike Spackey at 740-385-9372 or at his email address of [email protected] can also contact Dan Stohs at 740-385-7129 or 740-974-7895 or at his email addresss at [email protected] the first of the year this tourney will probably be full.

Is the tournament double elimination? Do you use more than one facility? Are games played Friday through Sunday?

Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
good question. i know in the passed the "hoop jam" was double elimination and was played in 5 to 6 different gyms. ex. all 4th grade in 1 gym. all 5th grade in 1 gym etc..... throughout the tourney. games where played friday, saturday sunday and all champ games would be played on sunday some starting as last as 7 or 8pm b/c of the size of the tourney. i would think that Mike and Dan would keep this format. but, not sure.pedro wrote:Is the tournament double elimination? Just wondering if you are going to keep local teams out because they choose to play in a different league than the HVBL. They are not an all-star team, just a group of kids who have stuck together and love to play ball. Just curious what you consider a "travel team". Thanks!

The format will be pool play with each team guaranteed 3 games.Games will be held Friday,Saturday and Sunday. We will get back with you on which hotels are going to honor our tournament rates. We consider All Star teams as picking up players from another team, playing in a traveling All Star league like COBA.Which that is what COBA is and always has been.No COBA teams have ever played in the Hoop Jam.This tournament is for rec teams that don't doesn't hand pick kids and then go play in a league where you pick and choose who you play. This rule will not change.
Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
I have always been told that a travel team is a team made up of individuals from different school districts. The Logan travel team would qualify in any tournament as a local rec team except for this one. What organization has sanctioned this former hoop jam as a school state tournament. I would think that rules to deal with situations like these are allready in place by the sanctioning organization.. Or is it sanctioned? are you still going to put all the tough competition on the opposite bracket from your Bobcat teams? or has that changed now?

Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
I think that some things need clarified. The Logan teams that play in COBA are not handpicked, nor or they a combination of kids from several teams. Every kid in this organization had an opportunity to be on these teams and the coaches had no say in who would be on the team. This is unlike the Bobcat 4th grade girls who have been hand picked and play outside of the hvbl all the time, "traveling" to all different tournaments. Also, you let "all star" teams come up from other areas and play last year and even verbally admitted that you knew they were. The double standards are very disheartening. It is a shame that you continue to tell lies about our kids, when we should be encouraging kids from both organizations because they are the future of our community. These are kids that live and play in our community and put their whole heart in what they do. It is sad that they will not be given an opportunity to show others in this community their love for the sport in a local tournament.

Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
Up until this year, ALL teams in the COBA league had to be made up of school teams only. This year there is a division for AAU teams that the local teams may choose to play in. If the Logans kids want to play in a state tournament there is one in Dayton that allows just local teams. Their defination of a local team is all members must attend or live in the same school district. This is a true state tournament, where the best school teams in the state have the option to compete against one another.
Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
He should have just said that he will not allow any Good teams from Hocking county into this tournament unless they are a Bobcat team. The fourth grade team is indeed ineligible by what he has stated. And by the way, there has been a COBA team in this tourney.Tthey were called Teays Valley Travel. They were in the Coba League, in fact that is where I first heard of the COBA league.

First of all.I will be the first to admit that they have been some All Star teams sneak into the Hoop Jam.But once we found out they were either removed and never allowed to play again. As for keeping kids out of the tournament that was your choice to go to Columbus and play better teams. Why would you want to play a bunch of rec teams anyway.Oh Yeah,I forgot you got beat by a rec team last year from Portsmouth. And you and your wife did nothing but bad mouth the tournament. And I most certainly did not tell you that they were an all star team.Because I never talked to you.So that is just something you have made up in your own mind to try and justify your reason for playing. And TallOne nobody cares what you think anymore.Stay over in Chilli and bad mouth your daughters team like you did in Logan.

ahh on the bench????
not sure who you think your talking to but aaahhhh. my kids didn't lose to a portsmouth team b/c we didn't play a portsmouth team....
i nor has my wife ever bad mouthed the hoop jams! in fact in this thread i have prasied mike and dan for do it. i personally think highly of both of them. they do 1 h3ll of a job putting the whole thing on! i'm sure they spend alot of personal time/money on perparing everything.
as for the all-star teams... i have seen some of the same teams in other tournies and have talk to parents & coaches and in knowing the guildlines of no all-star team allowed in the hoop jams, i know they are sneaking in and i have seen 1st hand a all-star team be removed from the tourney. as it should be. but if a team plays in an other league i see nothing wrong with letting those teams in. be it a COBA or some other league.
again on the bench, make sure you know who your pointing a finger at before you point it. :122249

Guys enough is enough. I'm not sure what teams would want to play in a tournament with this crap going on. I thought the game was for the kids. Show some class.

1987 Chieftain,I was not referring to you.Don't get offended. But the teams from LYBA that play in COBA tried out for the traveling teams. They even posted it in the paper and on their web page. The Bobcats don't have tryouts.Whoever shows up plays. That simple.

Re: Schoolboy/Schoolgirl State Tournament to be held in Loga
Get your facts straight. Hold your teams to the same standards. Remember this is for the kids. That simple. Just because you do not like a certain coach, is no reason to hold it against innocent kids. These organizations will have to come together once they reach junior high and they should support each other. There was no bad mouthing of your tournament by who you think this is. He only thanked you for bringing good competition to the tournament and helping to make the kids better. It was your partner, the parents, and the kids who admitted it was an allstar team - "a combination of our rec teams". I apologize that I mispoke and made it sound like it was you.
Logan kids should get to play in Logan if they have the chance. They go to school here, their parents pay taxes, and they are the future this tournament is meant to support. You shouldn't fault kids for going out and seeking tough competition. It doesn't mean they are better, it means they are trying to get better. It is not about winning, it is about competing, having fun, and supporting the kids every step of the way.
Just because you are unhappy with one team, do not hold it against the other 2 teams. They are only trying to get better before junior high. Good luck with your tournament. I'm sure there will be some great competition.
