Alonzo Mourning stops busy Miami traffic to assist a pedestrian

During his NBA playing career, Alonzo Mourning(notes) was known for his long frame, exquisite timing and defensive footwork. It allowed the 6-foot-10 center to rank as one of the more destructive defense forces of his generation, with a Hall of Fame career only partially curtailed by a kidney disease that eventually required a transplant.

He was also a very good screener, getting in the way of opposing point men in order to allow teammate Tim Hardaway (who struggled with bad knees after several operations) a clear look at the rim.

Right around noon on Friday, in downtown Miami, shocked drivers on the city's busy US 1 road got to see both elements in action.

Apparently, Mourning dashed out of his truck and into traffic to act as a crossing guard for a pedestrian who needed the assistance. Mauricio Maldonado of the Sun Sentinel has the report:

Mourning's vehicle had been sitting in traffic on the right lane, when he spotted a disabled person sitting in a motorized wheelchair along the curb. Mourning jumped out of his SUV, stood in the road and stopped traffic by raising his long arms, while the wheelchair-bound pedestrian made it to the median. Then, the seven-time NBA All-Star immediately went to the southbound lanes and raised his arms to command stunned drivers to stop. All traffic movement instantly stopped, and the wheelchair safely made it to the other side.

After making sure the citizen was safe on the other side of the road, Mourning lowered his arms and headed to his SUV to the sound of cheering fans, who recognized the 6-foot-10 temporary crossing guard.

That's easily the coolest thing we've read all day, and knowing Mourning? It seems kind of typical. His gait, his determination, his quick thinking, and those long arms all add up to a story like this.

The Miami Heat have been kind of lacking on the interior this season. Perhaps Zo has a few more reps left in him?

Miami plays at the Q tomorrow. Hopefully Cavs fans will behave themselves like the December 2nd game.

Theres no rule were it says that a player cant talk to guys on the bench. The Cavs players were talking to LBJ just as much as he was talking to them. I hope once again that the Heat lay it to the Cavs and beat them by 30 so that Dan Gilbert can go and cry in his office at halftime. :122246

gahs- When your former owner writes you a 14 page hatemail, you recieve countless racially directed letters and threats, people burn your jersey in the street and threaten your life and your family's life, all for switching teams and announcing it on TV, I hardly consider taunting the other team's bench justification.

The problem with sports today is that people take it way too seriously. Cleveland residents in particular get way to worked up. It's a game. Nothing more. The Cavs, Indians, and Browns should not define Cleveland people's lives. Not everything that happens in Pro Sports, such as a player going to a better team, is personal. It's Business, which is what Pro Sports is. That's a fact. I don't have a problem with what James did, but I have a MAJOR problem with the way people from Cleveland now treat him.

You all kill me with all this on how LBJ was not loyal to the cavs or the city of cleveland and their fans! If you want to talk about being loyal then you also have to say that cavs fans are not loyal! Before LBJ was there the cavs only averaged about 9,000 fans a game and for the 7 years that LBJ was there they avereged a sell out crowd! And now that LBJ has left they are back down to another low average of fans! I must say also that when the best people you can get are Mo Williams and Antwain Jamison then i would leave too!

Every dog has its day, but the Cavs better have fun now because they are not going to be in the playoffs. 4ever the planet I'm from is the real one. You think all NBA player have to be perfect people and role models but guess what their not. You must not have watched a NBA game since the 60's, because every game the players on the court say something to they other teams bench. Reggie Miller was the best trash talker of all time, he would talk trash to the fans. But in your eyes LeBron James is a bad person for following the rules but not by your standards. Also it dont matter they way LBJ left Cleveland. The Cavs fans would have acted the say way. Like gymrat said its a game, people hate LeBron for stupid reasons. But guess what no matter how much you hate him, he will still go on to be one of the best of all time. Also 4ever the planet I'm from is up to todays time the present, not 1960.

I dont understand how you can say LeBron only cares about himself. He has multiple foundations for kids to raise money. He gave all of his close friends jobs and gave them millions of dollars. You dont think before you say things you just say what you think is right. LeBron has always been known as one of the best people in the NBA. But just because he left Cleveland in a way that you dont agree with he all of a sudden becomes a jerk, and a bad person that only cares about himself, and what is your evidence for that?

4ever you say you see LBJ for what he is. Well what is he? The only reason you say he is a jerk is because of the way he left the Cavs, and that dosent make him a jerk, that was just a bad choise. So once again I'm going to ask you for some evidence why LBJ is a bad person.

I would love to see LBJ get MVP for 3 years in a row. But I think 4ever is right about Rose being the MVP. Rose I think should also get most improved because of how much better of a jump shooter he is this year. See 4ever we can agree on some things. :122249

I agree with you about the Celtics also. Since the Perkins trade their rebounding numbers and points in the paint numbers have dropped. That was a very bad trade IMO. They made that trade to save some money. But now look how good the Thunder are playing with Perkins in the middle. That is all that Thunder team needed to become a championship team. I still have the young Thunder team picked to represent the West in the NBA finals. I dont think Boston can go all the way without Perkins. So I think it will either be the Bulls or the Heat that will win the East.

I agree with you. Noah is not a true center he is more of a power foward. That brings up another point where you cant count out Orlando either, because of Howard. There is no other big man in the east that can stop him.
