Marietta at Logan, 2/11/11

Good article by Craig Dunn setting the stage for the big game tonight:

Logan handles the ball so well that Marietta can't count on getting many baskets from their defense. As a result Marietta will have to shoot well in half court to win the game. They will also not be able to afford turnover problems or foul trouble, especially from their guards. There has been a beautiful development in the Tiger offense in the last couple games that may help them tonight's last hurrah in Logan. I have been going to games in Logan since my middle daughter, a 2000 graduate, went there as a 7th grade volleyball player, on what I recall as the opening night for any game in their new, at that time, middle school gym. As I recall that was early September, or maybe even late August 1994.

Marietta 9 12 14 21 -- 56
Logan... 11 6 13 19 -- 49

It was very "fun to watch". Two excellent defenses, excellent officiating, and a very intense and well played game. The players left it all out on the court, especially Loryn Cassady - what a great player she has been since she was a freshman, even with the injuries. In fact late I think she tweaked her knee, and kept going. She scored 11 points in the first half and two miracle treys in the 3rd qtr to keep her team in it. Games like this, and the other games between Marietta, Jackson, Logan, and Warren are what makes basketball rewarding and memorable for the girls.

Marietta, after a turnover on their first possession, took a 5-0 lead on a Dawson put-back of a Brown missed trey and a Grosel trey on their next two possessions. Logan then went on an 8-0 run and Brown went to the bench for contemplation after missing one or two more treys that weren't that close to going in. Logan was biasing their fine defense toward Dawson and Grosel giving more room to Brown. Coming out in the 2nd qtr the Tigers went on a 10-0 spurt that set the differential for the remainder of the game as they went up 19-11 in a short time on two treys and a deuce by Brown and a deuce by Grosel or Dawson. From that point on, Marietta held the lead that stayed between 1 and 9 for the remainder of the game.

The turnover and rebounding battles were about a wash for the game and both teams missed quite a few inside shots. The field goal attempts were about even if you correct for the 5 more times Marietta went to the line in the 4th qtr as Logan trailed and put them there. In fact Logan committed 3 quick fouls between 1:45 and 1:35 left to get Marietta into the bonus and put Summers to the line with 1:32 left and Marietta ahead 47-41. I must compliment Logan on handling that situation well. So often you see a team just go hack to get the fouls called without having much chance to get the ball, but Logan while they didn't get it any of the three times made aggressive good efforts to get it that were close to being turnovers, and then the same on Summers.

On deuce attempts, Marietta was 8/27 for less than 30%, while Logan was 16/36 for better than 45%. The story of the game was the treys where Marietta was 9/20 for 45% while Logan was 3/16 for 19%. This made the average for the game on points per shot well in favor of Marietta at .915 to .788.
