Rules question...

Rules class 101: Can I assume after spending an ornate amount of time on this thread that some form of diploma will be forthcoming. Was interesting to say the least.

I really would like to hear some of the experienced officials talk about continuation versus on the floor in high school basketball. It gets called more and more every year.

What is getting called more and more every year? There is no "continuation" in high school. Rule 4, Section 41 reads in part: "The act of shooting begins simultaneously with the start of the try....." "A player is trying for goal when the player has the ball and in the officials's judgment is throwing or attempting to throw for goal." "The try starts when the player begins the motion which habitually precedes the release of the ball."

The key is in the judgement of the official what was the player doing at the moment the contact actually occurred.

Agreed. There is no continuation I high school basketball. I go to alot of games and see a player bein fouled, taking one and two steps before the shot, and either count the basket, or go to the line for two shots. I'm just forwarding on what I see in the gyms.

I called a few jr hi tournament games over the weekend...
7th grade game:
Team shoots the ball, rebounds the ball, shoots, rebounds, shoots, rebounds....4 times a shot goes up & the offense rebounds & shoots again....One fellow in the crowd is going nuts yelling 3 seconds over & over....[This is NOT 3 seconds]....
The ball goes out of bounds off of the defense...As the offense is taking the ball out of bounds the young man looks up at me and says "Please pay no attention to my dad, he has been thrown out of 3 games this year. He reall doesn't know the rules he just wants us to win"

I felt so sorry for the young man.....

As fans, do the ones yelling & screaming understand the affect it has on your kids???

We as officials are not perfect & we know it....But this is jr hi basketball....
A time in their life when the kids are trying to get out there & enjoy it....
Fans: Please, keep coming supporting your team, cheering, getting on us when needed....But please in the back of your mind realize these are 12 - 17 yr old kids just playing a "game" that we all love!

I don't think it is wrong for the one or two steps to be considered "the motion that habitually precedes the release of the ball". I see some very good players who make this habitual motion and get bumped during it and because they are so in control and realize that the shot will probably not be good they are so sharp that they pass it off instead of shooting and the ref says they are not in the act and doesn't give them two shots when if they would have known they'd have gotten the call they would have gone through with the shot. So they get treated unfairly compared to a lesser ability at the same point in the habitual motion when they get bumped and have not the body control or savvy to pass off, and are awarded two shots.

I think that if the player (B) on the floor doesn't/isn't moving and as you said Player A "trips" over Player B, Player A is the cause for his (A) tripping. Travel would have to be the call. It's kind of hard to penalize a player (B) who didn't cause the problem. Now if Player B is moving (trying to get up, etc.) then Player B would be at fault. A foul on Player B would be the call. That's why I ask if Player B was squrimming like live fish or laying there like a dead one.

The issue of "legal guarding position" comes into play under NCAA rules. NCAA does not consider the player (B) on the floor to be in "legal guarding position", so regardless of what Player B is doing on the floor, if Player A trips over Player B it would be a blocking foul on Player B. 8)

Another rules question for the fans;

Team A player has the ball right under the basket with both of his massive paws wrapped around it. He then takes the ball and uses it to push the defender right in the chest to make space for his shot (which he made). The play looks pretty sweet, but is it legal to use the ball to push a defender away?

player control foul. offensive player displaced defensive player. could even be called intentional. havent checked my case book yet but this would be my initial thought. would like to see the play on tape to see exactly what happened.
