I said for much of the season that Marietta looks to be the best team in the district with Jackson completely on their heels.

This margin of victory and seeing how insanely tight Jackson played them all year makes it hurt a little worse.

Good Luck in the regionals.

Great game by the Lady Tigers!! Everyone contributed and sent South Point packing. Not quite sure about the South Point student section chanting "airball" the entire game, but oh well, the Tigers pulled it out no problem. WTG!!

I know the coach well and he told me that Jackson played them tougher than anyone. Your future is bright in Jackson, to bad we won't play until tournament. Would be nice to face Jackson at the Convo next year. Good Luck.

Cambridge vs. Marietta at 6:15 Tuesday at Zanesville HS.

A future ECOL matchup, at another ECOL school.

It was early in the season at Cambridge, and Marietta overcame an 8 point deficit with 1:30 to go. It will be a similar situation to the Marietta-Jackson game last week which Jackson was trying their hardest to win after letting it get away in their previous games with each other. So I expect that Cambridge will be be really striving to reverse their fortunes this time, and the site will be the same as Marietta's only non-league loss when they didn't play very well, so they need to overcome that memory and resolve to not get in the "playing from behind mode", which they did well on today, having a good working margin the whole game after hitting their first three shots.

Undoubtedly, in retrospect, the most key game in winning the district was last week's Jackson-Marietta game, and it could have been the game today in the Convo if the seedings were done according to actual strength. Last week South Point blew out Miami trace, who was seeded #1 over Jackson. Miami Trace, regardless of their record, was just a shell of last year's team with no Jenna Cobb.

Marietta... 16 19 11 22 -- 68
South Point 8 15 15 13 -- 51

Marietta again plays great defense. The press wasn't so key today with the Fletcher and Bradburn ball handling, but the interior defense and perimeter defense on the shooters was outstanding. Fletcher and and Bradburn got some decent scoring, but nothing that was overwhelming. Dillow, who was a real sharpshooter last week, didn't make a FG.

My concerns of a great expanse shooting touch problem were evaporated quickly as Marietta shooters Grosel and Dawson put long shots in right off the bat, not rattled, banked, or bounced in, but right in the middle, so the tone was set early with a 7-0 lead, and then the lead varied from 3 to 10 points until the wild card, Lusia Barton, drained back to back treys to get the lead above 10 for the first time. Barton hadn't made a trey all season before that, and from the games I have seen, I can't recall her even attempting one.

In the first 2-3 minutes of the 3rd qtr, the Tigers got the lead up to 14, and that is when I felt they launched too many wide open long shots, instead of working a little time and driving to the basket for higher percentage shots and fouls or getting it in to the post players for close shots or fouls. The lead went from 39-25 to 42-37 while yet in the 3rd qtr, and then down to 5 again with 5 minutes left at 48-43, but the defense stayed strong and they got some good steals and run-out baskets to get the game back in good control again to 56-43 with 3:35 left, and took it home from there.

From the Ironton Tribune:
http://www.irontontribune.com/2011/03/0 ... cit-68-51/
“We didn’t get out and run with the ball, we didn’t rebound well, and we didn’t shoot well,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams.

South Point (19-4) shot 19 of 51 from the field for 37 percent and hit only 4 of 18 from behind the arc.

They were also out-rebounded 38-28 with Marietta grabbing 15 off the offensive glass.

“Marietta played really hard. They were well-prepared and executed their game plan and we didn’t,” said Adams.
Dawson finished with 28 points and Grosel 21.

Fletcher scored 19 points to lead South Point with Bradburn adding 15 points, five assists and two steals.

“It’s been a great run for our these seniors. I hate for it to end like this. We were due for a bad game, I just didn’t want it to be here,” said Adams.

Took my two daughters and went an watched for the Lady Tigers for the first time this season (Yes I am a fair weather fan). Was very impressed with the overall athleticism of the Tigers and their overall desire to win. Dawson and Grosel are studs, Brown, Summers, Schramm, Stoll, and Barton play their rolls very well!!! Cozzens does a nice job mixing up the defenses to keep the other team off balance.

As a former Tiger athlete, graduate and coach, one thing I saw that disappointed me was the Tigers student section. A lot of the boys basketball team and other students made the trip to the Convo, I thought the numbers were good, but they made very little noise. The South Point student section was loud, all dressed in yellow with some painted faces, they stood the whole game and chanted encouragement to their team. The Marietta student section sat slouched in their seats with their feet up on the chairs in front and acted completely disinterested in being there. Now some did yell, some responded to the "Air Ball" chant with a "Scoreboard", but overall very unenthusiastic and did not show much school pride.

Hopefully they can redeem themselves at Zanesville on Tuesday.

Girls, best wishes against Cambridge.
