Best Defender in the area?
Re: Best Defender in the area?
South Webster's best defender is Joshua Wright. He usually draws the other teams best player.
Burg's Shane Ward does a great job as well. He plays hard and does not draw any attention to himself. I would also tell you that he is one the best people you would ever meet. Truly a great kid!
Portsmouth's guards (Bendolph and Evans) can truly turn the pressure up at times and garner a lot of turnovers.
For his size (5'7") Ashton Miller of South Webster is one of the best---he will drive you crazy as you try to bring the ball up the floor!

That is a good list. Burg's Dylan Miller (freshman) also has the making of being a great defender. In the tournament, he has played great defense against high level players and averaged 6 boards a game. Playing behind Shane Ward has definitely helped him develop.svbt1112 wrote:South Webster's best defender is Joshua Wright. He usually draws the other teams best player.

Ironton's guards (Carter and Morton) are a threat to take the ball from anyone every time down the court. Great speed and hands.

Re: Best Defender in the area?
I think you have to seperate big men and guards as the way they effect the action through defense is totally different. With that said I think the best big man defensively is Malik London of Chillicothe. He is 6'8'' with a large wingspan, athletic, and has some of the best defensive timing I have seen in a high school kid. Against Warren on Friday he pulled down 20 boards and had 5 blocks I believe.
There are a lot more guards who could be considered. On ball defense is truly an art and I think a lot of names could be thrown out there with good merit. For Chillicothe I would say the best on ball defender is Isaac Beverly but the whole team really gets after it so some may disagree. I'm sure most teams have at least one player who is just in your face all the time.

I would add Whitley as a lockdown defender to the group.Portsmouth's guards (Bendolph and Evans) can truly turn the pressure up at times and garner a lot of turnovers.

Agree but you cant say Issac without saying Zach Johnson...he has done a great job on their opposing teams go to guy..datchillicav wrote:I think you have to seperate big men and guards as the way they effect the action through defense is totally different. As a Team, I agree. Chesapeake is the best in SEO defensively IMO. In D3 I have to say Cincinatti Taft as a Team is the best I've seen defensively and Offensively all year with Chesapeake a close 2nd. I guess that's why they are 1,2 in the AP Poll.earp wrote:Chesapeakes' entire team! They are just stellar defensively!

Re: Best Defender in the area?
His length definately hurt a lot of teams. My vote is Malik London for Defensive POY for that very same reason. If he puts on some muscle and sharpens up his offensive skills the kid could be a beast next seasn.streetballer wrote:Id say blevins from manchester was one of top 3 if not best defender in this area this season

Re: Best Defender in the area?
To quote Coach Gary Kellough today, Malik London may be the best shot blocker and rebounder in the state. The kid blocks 5 plus shots per game. If a team takes 50 shots per game, that knocks 10 percentage points off ypur field goal%. That does not include altered shots. He easily gets my vote for best defender.

Piketon had a solid defensive season, leading the league in team defense and one of the top ten in Southern Ohio. Legg broke records for steals, Brush led the league in Blocked shots at 3 per game, and I believe Helton had all of the tough assignments. The Streaks pressing defense created multiple turnovers each game.

Standing corrected Huntington at 46.0 (21 games) and Piketon at 46.4 (23 games)...hard to keep Zanesville, Mifflin, Waverly, and Chesapeake under 50! :122249rickuhrig wrote:Jimmy- need to check your stats on team defense.
