Pirates Cove
Mister B,The ship sets sail in Wrigley Field Chicago this Friday! And as a side note FSN Pittsburgh will become ROOT SPORTS on April 1st as well.I remember when it was KBL way back in the day.
Re: Pirates Cove
Arrgghh! We be ready my friend. Keep a weather eye on the horizon and the rum glass full as we prepare to sail north into the Windy City to deliver a broadside salvo on the Friendly Confines.
Heres hoping that ol Pegleg Hurdle can captain this ship full of young Buccos to a .500 record.

Pirates 6 Cubs 3
An extra portion of rum for all!
Buccos get all 6 runs via the long ball. Walker with a grand slam and McCutchen with a 2 run shot. Walker's slam was only the second Bucco grand slam on opening day and the first since Clemente's 1962 shot.
Correia gets the start and goes 6 innings with 3 Ks and 1 BB. The bullpen does the rest.
The Bucs opening day win today was a major league leading 5th in a row.

Re: Pirates Cove
Cubs 5 Pirates 3
Bucs waste a great performance by starter Paul Maholm. He goes 6+ and gives up zero runs. Meek comes in to pitch the 8th and just implodes as he gives up 5 runs. The only strikes he could throw were down the middle and the weak hitting Cubs pounded the ball. Also, Lyle Overbay, who is here for defense only, booted a routine grounder at first that extended a bad inning.
Buccos need to rebound on Sunday so they can win the series. I think Ohlendorf is the scheduled starter for the Bucs.

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
Buccos stage a 2 run 9th inning comeback to take the lead and Hanrahan gets his 2nd save as the Bucs get their first series win of the year.
Next up, a 3 game set vs the 1-2 Cards. Now is the time to take advantage of some of the Redbird's injuries and pickup another series win.
Sails are set and full with the wind as we mark our course for 'ol St. Louie and what hopes to be a treasure chest full of Pirate wins.

Re: Pirates Cove
Yes sir, RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
Charlie Morton gives 6 solid innings and the Bucs come from behind for the 3rd time this year to get the win. This is also our 3rd road win of the season and we have only played 4 games. We didn't get our 3rd road win last year until 4/27 in our 11th road game. We only had 17 road wins last year.
Positives for Pittsburgh to date...
Solid starting pitching
Strong closer
Timely hitting
Good game managing
Things to work on...
Basic fundamentals such as throwing ahead of the runner
Need a SS who can make the routine plays everytime
Get Evan Meek, our setup man, head into the game
The wheels nearly fell off in the 8th when Meek comes in to face 3 batters and all 3 get on base. Garret Jones in RF throws to home when he should have thrown to 3rd thus allowing the runner at 2nd to go to 3rd. Later, SS Cedeno boots a routine grounder on a DP ball that would have ended the inning and these things turn a comfortable 4-1 lead to a 4-3 lead. The closer Hanrahan has to come in a close out the 8th as well as pitch the 9th. Not good.
I did like Hurdle pulling Meek after 3 batters. Previous managers for the Bucs would have let him pitch his way out of it. So far, Hurdle is managing every game as if it were a playoff game and I like that.
J-Mac takes the mound for the Bucs tomorrow in game 2 of the 3 game series. He will be on a pitch count due to some lingering injuries from spring training.

Re: Pirates Cove
I agree on the SS position for sure.Rony is a good guy but he just about cost us the last two games.I liked the hiring of Hurdle all along. We pretty much stole him from the Mets. They wanted him bad. They had to settle for a former bullpen coach of ours in Terry Collins. The back end of the bullpen is strong. It will be nice to get Meek back on track and get Beimel back as well.
Re: Pirates Cove
Cards 3 Pirates 2
Too many swings at bad pitches by the Bucs. 11 Ks. We made a 5th starter look much better than what he is.
J-Mac pitched good enough in his first start after a limited spring training, 4 2/3 2R 4H 4K & 4BB on 87 pitches.
Bucs can win the series if they bounce back against a tough pitcher, Carpenter. Need better discipline at the plate to do so.

Pirates 3 Cards 1
RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
Correia pitches 7 strong innings and gives up 0 runs and just 5 hits. Meek pitches a perfect 8th for the hold and Hanrahan gets his league leading 4th save as the Buccs win their second straight series and get their 4th road win of the year.
Bucs didn't win their second series until mid-May last year.
Defense played a clean game and the offense cut the Ks down to 6, much better. You have to put the ball in play.
Ship is sailing for the home opener vs the 2-1 Rockies tomorrow. Forecast is for a full PNC Park and blue skies.

Sadly, no.Black Panther wrote:Are you going?
My son and I went to last year's home opener because I let him skip school and we had a blast. But now that he is in college and has class tomorrow, we can't go. If the game was in the evening, then yes, we would have went.
Are you going?

Re: Pirates Cove
Rockies 7 Bucs 1
Bucs get 1 run on 4 hits with 8 Ks. Can't win if you don't get runners on base and score.
Our Offense was offensive. Defense was lousy too, 2 errors.
Starting pitcher Maholm could have been better but it is hard to get in a groove with defensive lapses.
Need to bounce back tomorrow.

RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER!!!
Tabatha gets the walkoff double with 2 outs in the 14th as the Bucs come back after being down 3-0 in the first.
Bucco bullpen does a great job of pitching 11 2/3 scoreless innings as the offense could only muster 4 runs on 8 hits.
2 errors by the Bucs. Got to clean this up.
Game 3 of 4 tonight on fireworks night. Should be a packed house.

Re: Pirates Cove
Bucs fall 6-4 tonight to the Rockies. They wrap up the series with the Rockies tomorrow.Ohlendorf placed on the 15 day DL.(Shoulder) Daniel McCutchen recalled from Indy.
Re: Pirates Cove
Disappointing series vs the Rockies. We went 1-3. After the bullpen did so well in the 14 inning game, they struggled to hold leads in the last 2, especially in Sunday's game when the Bucs came for 4 runs down only to lose it in the 7th.
Brewers come to town for a 3 game set. Bucs and Brewers are tied for second in the Central. Pirates need to take 2 of 3 and get back into the habit of winning each series.
Will some of the bad blood from last season vs the Brewers carry over to this year?
