Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Just to be clear I said passing. Bryson was a runner who could pass some, but he made his big contributions with his feet. Alfie was basically the same. Both excellent qb's. Levi can run if he needs to, but he is a pure passer.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
We could be really successful if we became more of a passing oriented team this year. We return a good offensive line, two of our top receivers in Bricker and Auger. Zach Frye is a big athletic target, Carnes is someone who should step up and catch some passes this year, if Corey Summers shows up in shape he is someone that who's good in shape, we also have the younger Bricker who is going to be a sophomore who is athletic. Again it all depends on who we have as head coach next year.

from what i am hearing they are some very good coaches from out of the area that have apply so do not count on the coaches above to get the job.

Yes, but are there teaching jobs available for coaches to move into the district?

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Other than age I think shaffers resume probably stacks up against anyone who applied, he has 10 years of head coaching experience, playoff experience (including a win), experience as a teacher and principal, and if you put his knowledge of the game and coaching ability up against anyone who applied I guarentee he's at least as knowledgeable. You could say he's old and the game has passed him by, but go talk to him and you'll change your opinion real quick. That's not a knock to any the other coaches I listed they may be a better fit than shaffer, and its definitely not a knock to any other coach out of the area, I hope we get the best one available
And also that knows the school members knows they are gonna hire who they want regardless if they are a teacher or not, that's why I hold the non teacher coaches in contention.
I would imagine we will know next wendesday at the school board meeting

I just wonder how much our "perception", which if you talk to people seems to be of a bunch of fighting idiots, effects outsiders from applying. I don't agree with that perception, especially now, but it is what it is. It does however, take a personality with a thick skin that won't let "some" get to them if they are to succeed here. But that is most places as well.
Good thing about Shaffer. He's been here, so he knows what he's getting into. People like him and the players like him. He's familiar with the talent, so the transition will be easier. And I agree with Sider, he's very knowledgeable, and I will say, those around the program whom I believe know what their talking about, are impressed by him.
I may be way off base, but I would be surprised to see a coach get the job without a committment to a more "modern style" of ball. It's just an opinion based on the people in charge of making the descision, passed conversations, and what I know about them.

Yeah Triplett aggravated a lot of people because of his offensive play-calling. Ill admit, he had his flaws, but he had a system that made his players play just as physical on offense as they did on defense and in order to do this you had to live in the weight room. Its an old-school method, you can't argue with the results he made.
Anyhow, that was the biggest knock on Triplett by anyone, I would say they are gonna want someone who passes more, but I hope they pick who is best for the program not, who runs the offense they want to see.

Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Fans are going to criticize any coach in any sport on any level. That's just the way it is. That is exactly why I hope this is done soon so we can move on. I like coach. I thought he did an excellent job. I liked his style of ball and he did what he thought would help them win, and they won alot. Ironton goes deep in the playoffs basically every year and Lutz is the all-time winning coach, but I guarantee you he still gets criticized. It comes with the territory.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
One of the things that impressed me most about Coach Triplett was when he stepped up and took our basketball team and bringing in Coach Kitchen when the current coach resigned during the season. He really cares about the kids and has shown that over and over outside of football. We need that type of dedication from our next football coach.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Yea I have been in the stands and listened to what they have to say when they dont like a Lutz call. Pretty amusing. Everyone is a coach in the stands. West just happens to have the worst reputation for that kind of bravado.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Very true, I guess its one of the downfalls of the passion the West side has for its football. If anyone has coached they can tell you its much easier to make a call in the stands than it is out on the sidelines. Anyway, I still think this job is one that is very attractive to anyone. All we need is someone to build off of the foundation rather than tear it down.playa_44 wrote:Yea I have been in the stands and listened to what they have to say when they dont like a Lutz call. The Westside is no worse than any other school system. And as a Westsider anyone on here that agrees with outsiders should be ashamed of themselves. You are just adding backing to all the out"siders" negativity.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
I agree, I understand we have a reputation, but we are no worse than any other school. We just have a bunch of hard-nosed fans, players, and parents that don't accept second best. I honestly don't think this will scare off any coach worth his salt, if your gonna coach at a school with success you have to have thick skin.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
There are people like that in every crowd at all schools. Anyone who thinks different obviously doesnt get out much. I agree with you sider, coaches need that tough skin. IMO parents, players, and fans should support their coach 100% because he is THEIR coach. If there isnt that support it makes it a lot harder to be the best team possible.
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Apparently scott bricker did not apply for the job, so we can take his name out of the running, I also heard that to coach that applied from portsmouth was newsome
Re: Portsmouth West Head Coaching Job
Newsome is a good offensive line coach. I've heard him speak before at a camp. He's very knowledgeable. Only doubt I would have about him is would he use the West job to get experience and then leave for Portsmouth when Clifford retires?
Scott told me that he didn't coach last year because his new job takes too much time.
What about give Shaffer the job and get a young guy to groom for the job. Kind've like a coach in waiting.
