It is the coaches and administrations job to encourage kids to come out for the team. The school has to work to create an environment in which the kids are proud to be a member of the team! I agree that is not easy but that's what needs to happen to have ANY successful sports program. Attitude and participation are the first steps to success.

Good luck to all of the Raiders teams

High school athletics were created to teach kids to fit in in any situation set goals and work to achieve them. To learn to work with others and form a successful unit of 1. Training you for life jobs and future challenges. Not to cater and make it comfortable for the kids to do what they want. If kids chose not to play and could offer help to a team, their loss. If anyone thinks this you have never played sports at all. It will take time to weed out the weak and whiners but in the long run this administration is on the right track. I hate to see ant kids sit out sports they have worked up to High School age when this is what they have worked for.Any coach will tell you if a kid sits out as a freshman or any other year it is so hard to catch up with your classmates as far as timing offenses and defenses while summer programs are ok to work on offense and weight training you cannot substitute the high school game, these kids rarely recover to be useful team mates.
kids who sit out for different reasons, and use such excuses, don't like the coach,I'm better than someone else they won't play me,usually it is to much input from parents (knowing more than coaches) or kids who have attitudes and cannot take coaching.
Come on Raiders come out and play sports!
Good Luck
Coach Sparling and the kids who have worked to be proud team members.

If this is the right coach for this program he will turn this program around. The right coach will build the right attitude and the right players will turn out. As long as he is a man of character and of class and will make the kids good citizens, then he will attract the kind of athletes who want to play for a coach like that. all will be good it may take a couple of years but i feel a change in the winds that things will be better there.

I agree with most of what you said with the exception that in RVs situation it is up to the coaches to appeal to the kids and parents and talk to them about participation in the various programs. It is NOT about catering to them but simply talking to them about being a part of a "team" process and supporting their fellow athletes and the school in general. The attitude of "If a kid doesn't play ,then I don't want them" is old school and will NOT work in todays game especially in a school like RV. One thing EVERY successful coach at every level and in every sport has are PEOPLE SKILLS in some way. ALL great leaders have PEOPLE SKILLS in some manner....

My son will be a SR this fall and winter he has played primarily basketball,he also played AAU/OYB basketball this spring and summer,he also attended every open gym and team function when not at AAU practice or games not 1 word was ever said to him about it.He was at practice 4-5 nights some weeks this April May and June. We had an open gym schedule on the frig every month they were handed out by the coach, as much as kids text and talk these days ,not hard to find out when they are,2 freshmen were at every function!
I am at a loss of what your talking about (atmosphere for the players)?
Are you talking about coaches getting on players? About kids and parents dictating what the coach is supposed to do? MY thoughts are that the program is there it has been somewhat successful and i see this winters team being better than what most give it credit to be. Ask any kid who played last year i think overall they had fun, they always look like they are.
Explain: How a coach is supposed to make the program appeal to the kids and talk to them?
When you miss open gyms and scrimmages never show up how is the coach supposed to talk to you? Your missing team functions?
The problem at River Valley is the parents and kids think the school and coaches owe them something, that it is up to them to show up when ever they want and be part of the team. Yes if they don't show up it is their loss, what your suggesting is we allow kids to be spoiled brats do as they wish.
People Skills are great if your a politician and nice if your a High School coach, but hard to use them when kids and parents don't care if they show up for events.
IT IS UP TO THE KID TO BE THERE,NOT BE BEGGED TO PLAY OR PATTED ON THE BUTT AND SAY IT'S OK SON,NOT YOUR FAULT. IMHO this is what is wrong with today's society.
I work with parents and kids from Wheelersburg, Ironton, Jackson many other successful programs, there the parents tell the kids you better get your ass out there and work and get to practice or you will sit! Tough if you don't like the coach this world is full of people you don't like but you have to deal with them.
River Valley functions come first if your on the team,no excuses!!

Go Raiders

Stick a sock in it!
It's Football season this is a Football Board.
The team is there and will play with what kids chose to play,If you think it is up to the coach to ask kids to play and make it rosie for kids to come play for the school ,your in a dream world.
The team is like a family if you have skills and can help you work to be your best and contribute to the team, other wise sit in the stands be quiet about anything that happens on the field /court you had your chance to be part of it.Too many lazy kool brats these days, and parents take up for them.

Good luck all teams be healthy and have fun

I'm just saying how many scools have to share the practice field with their jr high program? It just seems that this is 1 more little thing the administration didn't consider.

When this is all finished, there will be a practice field next to the stadium. RIght now there is a bunch of equipment parked on it, but it will be there.

Yea ,wow it's like 2 tenths of a mile why would the drive LOL
It might take 6 mins to walk it or even Run?
God forbid 14-18 yr old boys have to run .2 before & after practice. Lol
