Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
it just a game most of the kids know each other anyway since most of them are wellston kids to me it is like wellston vs wellston. only the game being played at jackson overall both teams have good athletes.
Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
02 - they scrimmaged Zane Trace last evening at ZT. I heard ZT won the scrimmage.
Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
Zipper being awesome
Jackson does have 2 players from Wellston....they are both very good players, but quit taking away importance from all of the other players.
I'll guess Wellston has a larger % of players who haven't spent the vast majority of their school lives at the current school in which they play.

Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
Ok guys, without any bias or bs. let's have some input and opinion. Interested to hear some of your keys to this game. These are two teams that I believe both have alot of potential and could both be capable of winning the league. Jackson has alot of talent and even if you throw out the rivalry and emotion they are gonna be a handful for anyone on their schedule. They have some great backs in Ervin and Landrum and Landrum hasn't even came close to his potential, That kid is scary good with the heart of a lion. Their line will improve every game and I am glad we are catching them in week 1. They have a ton of potential and with Gould returning, If Gould stays focused, he is gonna wreak havoc on some defenses this year. Oj Barr and Tyler Jeffers are pure football players with a nose for the game and play it like it should be. Osborne has alot of talent and will improve every game, prolly a blessing we are catching him in week one, They have the ability to have a great passing game and if its clicking will be a rough game for any secondary. Some speedy lil guys they can run out of the backfield and Mcnelly has the potential to be very good. Wellston has a core group of players who have worked very hard and is a team with the potential to win the TVC-OHIO. The big thing will be health and depth. Offensively the line is sound, but not deep. The key for the offense will be ball control. They have some downhill runners in Prater, Roach and Wolford and Young plus The Downard kid is scary fast in the open field and Massie could create some problems in space. Prater is just a great kid with alot of heart and athletic abilty. Roach runs fast and hard, a kid with talent. Wolford has yet to reach his potential, A great kid with a big heart, good runner between the tackles. No one is sure how good Young is gonna be yet, but he has a ton of potential, if he gets some consistency he could be a handful. Brown is a very capable reciever and has looked very good at times and Shover has looked good coming out of backfield and is a great kid. Defensively the key will be the secondary. They are great kids, but will have to jam receivers off the line and try to keep behind them, which is is difficult to jam them and keep the min front of you. They should be solid against the running game with some very capable linebackers and D- Line. If the defense stays healthy and the younger kids keep improving they could have a very good season. I am positive I missed some things so lets hear some positive input, no slander or bias please. I hope for a competitive close well played game and great sportsmanship. Both teams have worked very hard. Best of luck to all the kids, they are what its about!!Ironmannut07 wrote:7 days.
Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
I feel that IF Jackson can avoid Wellston getting deep on them or fooling them by running the opposite way of what it appears (stay at home on the backside!) and keep the turnover differential at 0.....then Jackson will win by 14+ points.....that being said the IFs can be near the 100 mark and anything can happen. If Jackson loses 3 fumbles and throws 2 INT and Wellston runs 1 or 2 of those back.....well it'll be very interesting. If Wellston can make a big play or two and then keep the clocks rolling...huge pressure hits Jackson and it'll be tough going again.
So I know Wellston can win.....but believe it will take +2 or more in turnover differential OR a couple of HUGE offensive plays.
I believe Jackson will keep the turnovers at even and I believe Jackson will keep to their lanes/zones and keep Wellston in front of them. I think Jackson will be out for the kill and make more huge plays and win by about the same score they were defeated by last year.
I believe the most important part of the game is the first quarter and a half. IMO Wellston MUST be good early. The longer it is a close game the more the pressure mounts on the Ironmen. If Wellston starts off slowly and Jackson is clicking....it could get pretty ugly.

Good post. As with any game. The team who executes well and avoids turnovers will win. I hope for a great game by both teams.

Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
The atmosphere should be electric!!! both teams should be amped. Expect some first quarter mistakes due to both teams being so hyped up. Who ever makes the least first quarter mistakes should have the advantage goin into the second stanza. I hope for a close well played game on both sides.
Re: Week 1 - Wellston at Jackson
Good analysis of the game by everyone. Definitely gonna be a great atmosphere at Alumni Stadium on Saturday.
Something that played a large role in last year's game was that Jackson didn't appear to be as conditioned as Wellston. The Ironmen, it seemed, weren't able to sustain or finish drives because they were a little tired. At Wheelersburg on Friday, I thought Jackson looked like they were in much better shape than last season. The offensive line continued to play with the second string skill players and played very well late into the scrimmage. I don't think conditioning will be a problem this time around.
Wellston seems to be pretty inexperienced at the skill positions, and they're a very young team on the whole. I expect them to rely a lot on Jaylen Prater offensively. The Jackson defense really needs to make sure that they don't allow Prater to get loose and hurt them with big plays. That's not to say that they don't need to pay attention to everyone else and play assignment football, but stopping Prater will go a long way to disrupt what Wellston will be trying to do.
Offensively, the Ironmen need to be able to establish the ground game with Ervin, Landrum, and also Osborne. In order to do that, the offensive line will have to play solid football, and they must get a hat on Prater in the middle. After establishing the running game, it should open up the passing game even more for Osborne to find McNelly and others. That said, I probably won't be surprised if Coach Hall decides to air it out early and try to hit a big play to McNelly. Ty has been very impressive in the two scrimmages and I think he's a tough cover for any DB that he'll face this season.
As others have mentioned, the first quarter is very important. Wellston got off to a great start last year, built confidence, and then took care of business once they got a lead. Jackson needs to make sure that doesn't happen again this season. The Ironmen need to score early and often, putting the pressure on the Rockets this time around. Feed off the atmosphere, the home crowd, the loss from last season, and put it on Wellston early.
I don't know about everyone else, but I can't wait for Saturday!
