You are right Portsmouth was one game until the move into the SEOAL..at least that's how the 90's were...but I'm sure trojandave could shine some light..BTW I luv the green smiles..LOL!!Tobias wrote:Very good question!!!jgordon0315 wrote:When's the last time PHS has swept Chilly???
Trojandave would know for sure, but I believe that we never used to play Chillicothe twice in the same regular season prior to the SEOAL. I could, of course, be wrong.
But, we could have swept them in the regular season and the tournament.
Where is trojandave when you need him?
Final: @ Portsmouth 56 Chillicothe 34

Re: Chillicothe @ Portsmouth, 2/3
... PHS vs CHS =>going to be a war in paint, and on the perimeter ... one of those games where both teams can play above the rim - wish I could be in the house to see this one.. Best of Luck to two of the best TEAMS in Southern/Southeast Ohio ... Coach Collins/Coach Kellough's boyz will put on a great "show" ...

Re: Chillicothe @ Portsmouth, 2/3
This will be the 84th meeting between these two arch rivals, with the Trojans leading the series by a scant 1 game, 42-41..........as far as the last time Portsmouth swept Chillicothe in one season, it has never happened in SEOAL play........when the Trojans beat CHS last season at PHS, it was Portsmouth's first win over Chillicothe since the two schools joined the league in 2007..........this year, Portsmouth's win at Hatton Gymnasium was the first for the Trojans at CHS since 1998..........actually, until SEOAL play began, Portsmouth and Chillicothe rarely met twice in a season simply because both were in different leagues.........the Cavaliers were in the Central Ohio League until the late 70's, while Portsmouth was in the dying stages of the Greater Ohio League at the same time.
Chillicothe then joined the Ohio Capital Conference beginning around 1980, winning the OCC with I believe an undefeated record, finishing the season 22-1 with current AD Garin Veris as the key player........if my memory serves me correctly, Lee Osborne was the point guard on that team. Portsmouth, meanwhile, was playing in the short-lived Tri-State Athletic Conference, comprised of Kentucky and West Virginia schools.........in 1986, PHS then joined the Ohio-Kentucky Athletic Conference, which garnished a reputation as a tough basketball league.
So the two schools have rarely played twice before the SEOAL.........I'm sure at some point they have, but it probably by my estimation has been at least 50 years or so. CHS and PHS haven't played each other in the tournament since 1976, when the Cavaliers beat the Trojans 52-48 at the Rio Grande sectional..........in fact, CHS ended the Trojans season in 1971, 1973, and 1976 in sectional play. In 1971, Portsmouth did beat Chillicothe twice in the regular season, but lost in the sectional........so that really wouldn't qualify as a sweep.
Both schools have plenty of motivation beyond their natural rivalry........Chillicothe is trying to defend its SEOAL title, while Portsmouth is vying for its first league title of any kind since an OKAC championship in 1991. Also, the Trojans are trying to win their 15th game of the season, which would be a remarkable 40th time in school history that PHS has won at least 15 games in a season.
Always look forward to seeing our Trojans battle the Cavaliers.........and based on SEOAL play the last two years and seeing some good talent coming up for both programs, the rivalry is alive and well and should continue that way for a long time.

Tobias: I do know the Trojans swept the Cavaliers in 1971 in the regular season, only to have CHS beat us in the sectional tournament..........so that really wouldn't qualify as a sweep.......I was thinking the last time sweeping a regular season series with no meeting in the tournament.........and that's been a LONG time ago, but it has most likely happened.

Re: Chillicothe @ Portsmouth, 2/3
Looking in my book, "The Portsmouth Trojans........A Century of Basketball Excellence"......Vol.2, Portsmouth swept Chillicothe in the 1961 season.........the Trojans beat the Cavaliers 68-60 in the regular season, and then bested CHS 52-51 in one of the greatest games of the rivalry.........the Trojans scored with just seconds to play to win........and Portsmouth went on to win the state championship that year.
Portsmouth and Chillicothe didn't meet in the regular season in the Trojans' state championship year of 1931, yet PHS did beat the Cavaliers 33-6 in the tournament.
Portsmouth won at Chillicothe 62-54 in the Trojans' state championship year of 1978, but did not meet in the tournament........it was PHS's first year in Class AA, while CHS was still a AAA school.
Portsmouth won at Chillicothe 67-50 in the Trojans' state championship year of 1988, but the two schools did not meet in the tournament..........PHS was a D2 school(the first year of 4 divisions set up by the OHSAA), while CHS was still a D1 school.

Re: Chillicothe @ Portsmouth, 2/3
Tobias: I would love to do so, but I would probably have to live to be 100 considering how much work it takes doing research through microfiche..........anybody who has done work with microfiche knows what a S-L-O-W process that is to gather information.
The Portsmouth High School yearbooks are locked up in the school library, because I asked about them one day..........in the old school, they gave me access to the yearbooks because they were displayed in a room next to the office.........so I gathered quite a bit of info from them for my books.

Chilli got smoked by Gahanna it looks like. I just dont think we are as good as in years past. Still a pretty good team however. When you win so many district titles in recent years its easy to overlook how good you have had it. Just a little spoiled I guess.
Go Cavs!
