The State of Adena Basketball
I believe Adena is 3-39 over the last two years. Is there any improvment in sight in the near future? This years team had eight seniors who in the fourth grade were supposed to be a very good class. They had no success from junior high on up. There football teams are always among the most physical in the area and for some reason this does not show up in basketball. Is it unusual for a school of this size to have such a stark contrast in the two sports? Adena's basketball team this year was one of the softest I have ever seen.

If they can keep Coach Smith and his staff around, they will be much improved in the future. They have a solid 8th grade class coming in and if they can get a player or two that didn't play to come out next season, they are a lot tougher immediately. The JV team improved big time from last year as well.
Things will get better, just give it a little time.

Coach Smith deserves time to turn this program around. Both the 7th and 8th grade teams are talented. If he can get the kids to buy into his program I think they can make some big improvements in the very near future. Of the 5 starters on the team, how many of them are football players? Just because you are good at football doesn't mean you are good at basketball either. I heard rumblings from the Adena crowd about how kids "need to be on the floor, he is a heck of a football player." 2 completely different sports. Give Coach Smith some time, I will make these kids better basketball players.

What concerns me is I'm hearing only 3 or 4 of the eighth graders are going to play next year.
On a side note, I don't care what sport it is the coach has to get the best athletes on the floor period! One of the eighth graders will probably start varsity next year the other two will be basketball players only like we had this year. I wonder if Coach Thomas of the football team encourages his players to play other sports. It sure didn't look like it if you looked at the basketball roster this year!

Thats crazy. Look at the baseball team. Full of football players in years past. Ask yourself over the past 10-15 years how many basketball coaches have Adena had and there is your answer. Over that period of time how many football/ baseball coaches have you had? There is your answer.bulldawg22 wrote:What concerns me is I'm hearing only 3 or 4 of the eighth graders are going to play next year.

excellent point bengalfan, and after watching them at the beginning of the season and then again at the end they made vast improvements over the course of the season, might not have translated into wins but they played everyone tough.

No, i honestly dont find that strange at all. they are two completely different sports. And if i recall right, they only had one football player on their roster this year, all state running back reid hutchison. That doesnt mean he's an all state basketball player. I think they will improve greatly over the next season. Its hard to win a game with no post presence. With their best post player out with a torn acl, the only height they had was 6'3" first year player Nick Hooks. Even though they graduated a majority of the last years team they have 4 players from previous varsity teams coming back and a solid 8th grade class coming up, which will probably have one starter coming out of that class in Johnathan Thomas. Also rumors of two transfers coming in from other ross county schools makes me believe the Warriors will improve.bulldawg22 wrote:I believe Adena is 3-39 over the last two years.
