Coaches choose District’s best

PDT Sports Report

The Coaches Association has released their 2011-2012 awards list for the girls teams in District 14.

Notre Dame comes away with the biggest prizes locally as senior Jen Arnzen won Division IV Player of the Year and her coach, J.D. McKenzie won Div. IV Coach of the Year.

Arnzen averaged 14.8 points per game, 11.8 rebounds per game, 2.5 assists per game and recorded 18 double-doubles in the regular season.

McKenzie led the Lady Titans to a 17-3 overall finished and a 13-1 record in the SOC I good for the conference championship. It was Notre Dame’s first conference title in 28 years.

Whitney Bear of Valley, Tori Leader of West and Alex Southworth of Piketon each earned spots as Div. III First Team performers.

Southworth will be the district representative at the Div. III and IV North/South All-Star game while Bear will be the first alternate.

Interesting that ND wins the league , finishes with one loss . Has 2 kids get district recognition. (only 1 makes 1st or 2nd team)

Clay finishes tied for 2nd in the league but also has only 2 girls get the votes. ( only 1 makes 1st or 2nd team) ...

BUT

NB finishes 4th in the league and has 3 girls gets district mention . and East finishes 5th or 6th ? in the league and has as many garner the votes as Clay and ND . And Eastern Pike had 3 as well . MD

TRUE STORY

Back when I coached track a few years ago, we were having our district meeting on all-district selections. My particular district of SE D3 girls only had 3 coaches present at this meeting. We were voting on the District athlete of the year. This was my first time doing such a thing. I was asked my choice and I chose a young lady from Paint Valley who was easily the best choice as she had advanced to the state in an event and had the highest regional places to go along with it. After making my verbal vote.....the elder coach says to me, " she can't win, her coach hasn't paid his dues and is not present at the meeting" . I said......"what does that have to do with anything, this is about the kids achievements, not a coach paying $10"....the other coach agreed with the elder coach as he was an oldie but goodie as well and the Paint Valley girl was screwed out of the D3 athlete of the year for this reason.....but not by me.

Actually, I was a little foggy on the details and went back for some research. Remember, we are voting on the district athlete of the year and She scored 30 points in the district track meet. She won the 110 Hurdles.....by a big distance, she won the 300 Hurdles by nearly 2 seconds, was 2nd place in the 200 meter and was on the 2nd place 4X200 relay team. She qualified for the regionals in 4 different events.....no other athlete did that and she scored 30 points....no one was even close to that accomplishment.......then she had the best regional meet as well. The coaches voted after the regional meet and before the state meet took place.

Sadly, this girl was only a freshman and never was that dominant again at least compared to that year. Not sure if she ever went on to win the top award or not, but I don't think she did......she was screwed by the coaches.

In basketball (like football) isn't all-district voted on by AP writers in the district?

It is sad that kids that work hard get slighted whether cause of their coach, or where they play, who their parents are or especially their grade. The best player should get player of the year, you can't punish the player cause they are freshmen or sophomores don't like the logic that the senior should get the award, that is a outdated logic, a lot of underclassmen work hard and deserve to be recognized as so. JMO, know in are our area it will not change

In basketball, you have all-district that is voted on by the coaches and you have an all-district voted by the writers. I agree with jeepnow, the best players should be nominated no matter what grade level they happen to be.
