Portsmouth vs. Cincinnati Summit Country Day - D3 Title Game
Re: Portsmouth vs. Cincinnati Summit Country Day - D3 Title
First of all the Chillicothe poster is an idiot the Cavs are a fine team and a lot of nice posters on here from chilly but his post was ridiculous Portsmouth won both meetings this year. It's a shame that people get on here bashing the team that were just division III runner ups. Congrats to Summit day. I don't think they were that much better than Portsmouth just wasn't meant to be. Great season by the Trojans Ill remember it forever. The 12 departing seniors will be missed but one thing is safe to say, Portsmouth basketball is back. We Are One
Re: Portsmouth vs. Cincinnati Summit Country Day - D3 Title
Great run for the Trojans! Didn't seem like they ever got over the slow start today. Summit country day returns all but one player and should be a force again next year. I was surprised to see Portsmouth go to the locker room after receiving their medals and trophy. I thought teams returned to their bench while the other team received theirs.

Congrats on a great year Trojans. You represented the are well and we are all proud of your effort.
As far cavfan1995, he is the same idiot that asked for a ride to a playoff game on here then called everyone names when no one would take him so we've known for a while what a classless person he is.

Congrats to the Trojan Nation on a great run this year. I truly enjoyed watching them over the past three days. It is great to see teams and young men you know playing at the highest level Ohio hoops has to offer.
My observation of the game may be different than many others on here, but IMO, the game was lost Thursday in the semi-final. My close observation of Dion today was he did not his Hops and bounce in his step. That all but negated the inside and inside/out action the Trojans get. The Trojans were outscored in the paint 26-16. Also the Trojans only had 4 fast break points. Which Johnson and Woods are nice for CSCD, I would roll with the Trojans perimeter players all day.
Had Dion been 100% , I believe the 2 man or pick and roll would have been there all day. Dion could not even take the big kid #50 of the bounce. Dion also Only had 1 block and very few other altered shots. A 100% Dion opens up the perimeter for Carter who did not get but one good look all day. Also, Evans and Whitley had to take to much on themselves. I believe a healthy Dion goes for 20 plus in this game and opens it up for everyone else. One more case in point. A healthy Dion gets to the free throw line. I don't believe the Trojans shot one free throw today.
Hopefully these Trojans will get their just due in the future. Even though they didn't bring home the 5th State Championship, I still believe they were the best D3 team in the State. Coach Collins and staff did a tremendous job and he has all ready cemented his legacy in the history of Trojan Coaches.

Great season for the Portsmouth Trojans! Back to Back Final Four Seasons is an awesome accomplishment and something even in the past "Glory Days" had never been done. Thanks to Coach Collins, staff, and players for returning the program back around. I'm very proud of those kids and they can always hold their heads up high for this great run. I'm sure I will see them again in the Bannon Park Classic this summer. It will be a pleasure to coach Dion in the North/South game in April.

outstanding season! Im one proud Trojan setting in Pa. I felt the The first quarter set the pace and we just could never get it rolling. The big three at the buzzer after we had cut the lead to five at the end of the third was a back breaker. I was really surprised that we didnt get to the line, and once again I state this, just like in Pa, I hate that the public schools have to compete with the private schools in these tourneys

Congrats on a fine season, just couldn't buy a basket in the game. The young men represented our area well and have nothing to hang their heads about.

Congratulations to the PHS Trojans! I've seen them win two State Championships and at least 3 State runnerup trophies. They are back! Cinn Summit was not flashy, tall or had any player that dominated the game. They were very disiplined in running their system, waiting for the perfect shot and not turning the ball over. PHS never seemed to get in to the flow of running their system. One thing I did notice is CSCD never seemed to miss many shots and PHS was 1 and done, no offensive rebounding and put backs. PHS was evenly matched but shots were not falling. I had a friend tell me Cinn Summit Country Day is a private school that cost $20,000 a year to attend. I wonder how many of them players were hand picked from other districts out of Cincinnati?

that is true marshallman - i just checked out their website and it is approx. $20,000 per year! and they refer to their school as "THE Summit"....looks and sounds like a bunch of spoiled 'ivy league' wannabes. Hope mommy and daddy are proud!

Are any of the PHS seniors going on to play college hoops anywhere? I haven't seen anything about McKinley, Evans or anyone else getting any college looks. I know Whitley is going to be playing college football, but after 2 nice tournament runs, this group has gotten a lot of exposure in the tournaments.

I would also like to congratulate Coach Collins, his staff and players for another outstanding season. Although you may be disappointed as players for not winning the gold trophy, you will look back on these events in a very short time and remember the wonderful times you had together as a team or better a family. Just going to the state tournament two years in a row (even if you could look ahead and know you were going to lose) is something that most players from other schools would gladly trade with you. You have much to be proud of and thankful for! Best of luck to all of you as you continue into the next stage of your life.

VERY PROUD OF OUR TROJANS!!!
This senior class will go down in PHS history as one of the most prolific ever:
1. Back to back Final 4's for the first time in school history
2. State appearances 14 and 15 which puts Portsmouth in 2nd place behind only Canton McKinley
3. 2011-2012 SEOAL Champions
4. 21-5 and 24-3 record the past 2 seasons........the 24 wins ties the 1990 team for the second most ever
5. Won the 35th and 36th district championships in school history
6. Won the 39th and 40th sectional titles in school history
7. Had two 1,000 point scorers on the same team........Wayne Evans and Dion McKinley
8. Dion McKinley breaks Larry Hisle's single game mark of 41 points with 42 points vs. Logan.......Feb.10, 2012
Coach Eugene Collins has amassed an impressive 57-15 record in just 3 seasons, which puts him 3rd all-time among Trojan coaches over the same time period........Joe Suboticki was 69-8 in his first 3 years (1988-1990), while Tom Smith was 60-12 (1982-1984).
Portsmouth has now appeared in 8 state championship games.......the same number as Cleveland Villa-Angela St.Joseph and only behind Middletown and Canton McKinley.
I felt a lot of pride to hear OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross mention in his speech to the Portsmouth team and fans that PHS has made 15 state appearances which drew a lot of applause from around the Schottenstein Center.........he also stated that Portsmouth had won 4 state championships as well.
What a fabulous two year run by the Trojans, Coach Collins, and his staff.........Trojan basketball is back in the talk of prominent programs around the state.........that 5th state title is coming........just maybe sooner than later.
ALSO Congratulations to Summit Country Day........they were the better team Saturday, a deserving state champion.

I would just like to say a great big thank you to Coach Collins and his staff for all their hard work!!! They have helped revive Portsmouth's proud basketball program back to the level that many of us old timers had grown accustomed to seeing on a yearly basis. It was so much fun to follow this group of young men and I wish each and every one of them the very best in their future endeavors. I know that they wanted one more win than they got, but as a Trojan fan and alumnus, I will forever be grateful for their efforts in bringing back the basketball program to prominence. Count me in, as being excited to see Gene, Jim, and the boys put together another quality team next year with a fresh batch of faces!
