Portsmouth will play Waverly next Thursday at Portsmouth High School around 8:30 PM, but the Trojans will be down quite a few players due to other committments.

Nome (sp?) Tipton......this is the name of the 8th grader who really impressed Coach Collins at the junior high open gym.......he's about 6-3 and has a very nice skill set..........putting him alongside 6-3 Kendall Reynolds, Mike Malone, guards Luke Purdy and Ty Oliver, the 8th grade Trojans have a good shot of going undefeated next season, considering that this same group without Tipton went something like 15-2 last year.

The Trojans finished up play in the summer league last night........first, they played Waverly last Thursday at PHS......the Trojans were without Kyre Allison, Sky Oliver, Isaiah Lisath, Kahlil Lattimore, Alex Dickerson, and Alex Grashel.......still, the Trojans played the Tigers even for 4 quarters. Last night, Valley beat PHS by about 14 points at Valley High School. The Trojans and Indians split summer games against each other, with the Trojans beating VHS at Northwest while VHS returned the favor last night.

Kyre Allison and Austin Peano did not play, and Jordan West was not there for Valley........one thing for sure came out of last night''s play........Kyre Allison makes a huge difference in this team........with him on the court, there is a good symmetry teaming with Sky Oliver and Jayllen Carter........without him, the symmetry is not there, in addition to missing perhaps the team's best ballhandler.........but it was a good experience for the Trojans to play without him, as they are still trying to develop a chemistry. Levi Porter continues to improve and showed some good decision making.

Hayden Dunn played really well for Valley.......despite losing quite a bit off last year's team, the Indians should have a good season.

The Trojans' JV squad also finished up summer play as they defeated the JV Indians convincingly.......freshman Ethan Leonard was outstanding for PHS.

Portsmouth will next play in the Bannon Park Classic on Friday........start time is 6PM or 7PM.......don't know how many high school teams are in it, but Friday night's games involve high school teams.

Got a chance to see Noam Tipton (I believe his first name is spelled correctly, but pronounced Nome) at a KBA game (Kids Basketball Association......a league started by Anthony Kearns and played at the 8th St. gym........this kid really impressed me.......he is closer to 6-4 than 6-3 and runs the court well, has good coordination, and definitely will be tough to defend in the paint next season........really excited to see Noam playing on this year's 8th grade team.

As always wishing the trojans well. Trojan Dave hope you all play well this season. With the exception of my boys in blue. Whenever you get time. You might want to catch a game with the Muskies. Coach Maddox sent one of his boys in blue to Coach Ford at Muskingum College.

32,16,6: Thanks for the well wishes........and likewise to you and your son.......I know that Coach Maddox will have another good team that will challenge for the SEOAL title........the Warriors should be the favorite to win it this year.......my Trojans should have another good season if we can rebound and defend in the paint.

I hope you have a good and safe summer!!

The Trojans finished up summer play with a very good showing in the Bannon Park Classic........they made it to the 3rd and final day of the event, losing to the eventual champions by only 3 points........our kids showed a lot of heart, coming back from big deficits twice to post wins........and for the first time all summer, the Trojans played physical and didn't back down from anyone........I think Trojan fans who saw our kids came away with the idea that the 2012-2013 hoopsters just might be better than originally thought.

Went to watch my son in a couple of games at the Rio camp a couple of weeks ago.....came away really impressed with Sky Oliver! Really stood out to me as a very nice player, quickness, sees the floor, Defense, etc..; then to find out that he is only going to be a freshman - WOW. Enjoy him the next 4 yrs.......

Had a meeting the other day with Coach Collins and some other passionate Trojan fans about forming a Portsmouth High School Basketball Alumni Association........a lot of details have to be ironed out, including a website, but there has been a lot of interest from former Trojans players about getting this started. I think it's a fantastic idea, and something that will certainly help preserve Portsmouth's rich basketball history, and generate present and future interest in Trojan hoops.

Another meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, August 7th at the Portsmouth City Schools Adminstrative Building at 7 PM.

The Trojans will be going to the KSA Basketball Classic in Florida in the 2013-2014 season........It cost almost $25,000 to go 2 years ago, and right now the fund raising for next year's trip is going well........maybe this time I can make the trip to the Sunshine State to see the Red and Blue.......I almost went with jgordon0315 in 2011........Portsmouth went 2-1 in the KSA, and despite being in the big school class, went 2-0 vs. the state of Florida, with the lone loss being to Los Alamitos(CA).

The Portsmouth Basketball Alumni Association was created last Tuesday.........this is an association whose basic mission is to promote Portsmouth basketball, from a historical perspective to taking an active role in the yearly operation of the program, from fundraising and attracting members, to helping out with certain costs that the basketball team incurs, for example, summer camps........also included is the awarding of a financial scholarship to a deserving member of the basketball team. A first-class website is being developed, and in a short time will be up and running as part of an association membership.

As of right now, there are 3 levels of association membership.........$25, $50, and $100........each includes certain privileges, but all members will receive access to the basic association website.

When I find out the exact details of how to join the PBAA, I will post them........next meeting of the PBAA is September 12 at 6PM at the Portsmouth City Schools Administrative Building........anyone interested is invited to attend and any ideas for helping the Association execute its mission are welcome.

Sounds like a worthwhile organization. Good luck with all projects and efforts.

Oliver will both thrill you and upset you within minutes of watching him play. He has great potential indeed, but I guarantee you he will lead the team in turnovers and poor shots taken by a mile.

sportslifelove: Sky Oliver will improve on all aspects of his game as the season progresses.......consistency is probably the toughest thing to achieve as an athlete, whatever sport it is. At the same time, talent and hard work will help develop that elusive consistency, and with my own eyes I have seen Sky in various settings, indoors and outdoors, working on his game.

This is Sky's first year on the varsity.......inconsistent play is bound to happen, but as the season goes look for that same inconsistency to diminish........also keep in mind that the Trojans have a brand new starting 5, sans Jayllen Carter......that will account somewhat for some Sky's bumps along the way.

It will really be fun to see Sky teaming with Jayllen Carter and Kyre Allison, giving the Trojans a trifecta that will really be tough for opponents to defend.

The website of the Portsmouth Basketball Alumni Association is up right now........click onto http://www.trojanhoops.org. It is not complete but will soon feature a lot of historical information, including team pictures dating back to 1950........also planned in conjunction with the website is a "Trojan Store" which will feature apparel and other items that can be purchased online.

The PBAA is gaining momentum even in its short life thus far and eventually it is hoped that it will have many members who together will preserve and promote Portsmouth basketball for the past, present and future Trojans.
