home plate umpire was to put it mildly, not very good, especially for a regional game

athens got any pitching left?

steuby rolls
Kasler and Bradbury. They pitched a lot this year since Sano was hurt but Steubenville is very good. Athens will definitely have to score a lot of runs to win

No magic, Dani. Rodgers did move to a position, 3B, when Sano took over on the mound. Proud of these 'Dogs. Fell into a 4-0 hole and spent the entire game battling back to tie, only to see the Tigers pull back ahead mulitple times. Finally took the lead in top of 10 and didn't let go of it. Hats off to both teams!

Athens.. 012 203 000 1 -- 9 15 1
Marietta 401 120 000 0 -- 8 13 3

Great, great game, in a great venue with great weather. These two teams went from a 1-0 district final last year that had no RBIs to this true district championship game in the regional semi at a great district site that had 28 hits combined. Marietta had 3 beautiful bunt hits and Athens had a couple bad hop hits to the 1st and 2nd baseman.

The thing that very heavily came down in favor of Athens was on base running and base running defense. Athens stole two bases, both being 2nd on the first move of the lefty pitcher, and both turned into runs in the 2nd and 3rd. On the first one, the pitcher went home and the runner beat the throw easily. On the 2nd, the pitcher went to first and when the 1st baseman had to double clutch the throw to 2nd the runner beat it. Then in the 4th, Marietta tried to steal a run with 1st and 3rd with 2 out when the runner from first tried to get in a hotbox and get the run in, but Athens played it well and got the tag on for the 3rd out when the runner was about a step from home, so Athens got the out they were given, but Marietta didn't get the run they were sacrificing the out for. Also Marietta had an error from the mound on a pick-off throw, and allowed two runners to score from 3rd on wild pitches on the same Sano AB in the 4th, the only runs of the inning. The Athens hitters were giving such tough at bats, and Kostival had just walked to load the bases on a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs that was very close, and then Schamp wanted to get extra bite to try to get the last out and ended up giving up two runs on wild pitches that tied the game at 5-5.

Both teams gave it their all and generally played very, very well. A game to remember for a long while!

So the 3rd baseman(#14) was batting in the 8 hole. The new 8 hole hitter(#8), was he the fielder who wasn't batting until then. What position was the original non-hitting batter playing, and did he continue to play that position, and was he #8?

#9 Sano was the DH for #24 (the Right Fielder). When Athens brought in Sano to pitch they made a double switch. They brought him to the field, which removes #24. The second sub was #8 for #14 (the 3Bman). #8 played RF and Rodgers went to 3B.
