West and Ironton scrimmage
What do you think about this?
Two teams known for hitting people in the mouth and are both 3 yards and a cloud of dust offenses
Who has the upper hand
Give some of your thoughts

Re: West and Ironton scrimmage

I think tl895 is trying to say it would be better if it was a regular season game or maybe even a jamboree game.game day wrote:Why would you say anthing like that?
Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
This will be an interesting scrimmage. Ironton lost a lot to graduation, lost a key player to injury, and lost a legendary coach, but it is still Ironton football! I am sure Ironton wishes this was a regular season game instead of the Oak Hill game.

As Im sure West wished they hadnt had the devastating injury in Pendleton and several other key players year before last, so they could have played Ironton in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Guess that is high school sports.
Didn't West loose alot to graduation also?

Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
I don't think that will happen. West has a very good schedule yearly. That would mean West would need to drop someone from their schedule and I think that is something they don't want to do. I heard SP droped them and West picked up Chilly. Does anyone know if Ironton has filled their schedule at this time? It would have been best if Ironton would have joined the OVC in all sports. This would have allowed them to pick up some additional games to fill their schedule. You're Tiger Bait wrote:i'd love to see a game scheduled every year, regular season.

Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
I pretty confident we will see this be a game as soon as next year (or whatever year Northwest is dropped). I think Triplett and co. wants to play them and with the west program seemly returned to continuity I feel it will be a competitive game every season.
Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
This will be a good scrimmage to see where both teams are at to start the season.
As far as a regular season game that would be fine, but I would much rather see us pick up a good team that runs a spread offense. If your gonna advance in the playoffs you have to stop the spread. Your not going to see the full house T unless these two run into each other and we play enough run based teams anyway. We can't continually go into playoff games changing our defense on the fly trying to drop off ends and such to mach up with the 4 and 5 wide sets. The 5-2 is fine, but we need to learn to play a 4-3 or 4-2-5 some if we want to get back to Canton. Actually both teams do.

I don't know what schedule you have been looking at? Other than our conference games our schedule is weak. We have to almost have to go undefeated to make the playoffs. We should pick up ironton and some bigger school and cut ties with the OVC schools all together. You have to have second level pionts to make the playoffs and the OVC just don't give them to you.game day wrote:I don't think that will happen. West has a very good schedule yearly. What do you call it when ends drop off for coverage and you don't do that on the fly you practise it? You need to learn some football before run down the 50 defense.

The 50 is a pretty good defense, but to do it well, athletic ends are a must.
Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
So what your telling me is a 50 is good for stopping a spread offense?game day wrote:siderman wrote:This will be a good scrimmage to see where both teams are at to start the season.

And since I mentioned Ironton. Why has Ironton played a 3-3-5 against Wheelersburg on more than one occasion if the 50 is so great? Why did we go to a version of it to beat Waverly about 4 years ago at home? Please tell me ole' wise one.

What do you think you have when you drop off your ends into coverage?
Re: West and Ironton scrimmage
Does dropping an end off of a base 5-2 mean you have a 4-3? Numbers wise yes but it's much easier and natural to bring a strong side linebacker up to the line of scrimmage to make a 5-2 from the 4-3. Out of the 5-2 the ends are not used to playing in space so their coverage skills will be suspect at best. Also your inviting the problem of loosing contain on the side that your ends drop off because your defensive tackles are aren't used to playing basically an end at that point.
I'm not saying drop the 5-2. It's been good to us. But play something else at times, whether it be a 4-3 or a 4-2-5. Have a proven package that you've practiced alot in game conditions.
