GAHS eliminates Chillicothe, 11-1

Blue Devils advance to district tournament
Gallipolis Gallia Academy, behind the two-hit pitching of Justin Bailey, eliminated the Chillicothe Cavaliers 11-1 in a six-inning game on the Robert H. (Bob) Eastman Ballfield in Centenary Thursday evening before a large paying sectional final crowd.

Gallipolis will now play the Hillsboro Indians in the Division II District Tournament semifinals on Tuesday, May 15, at 5 p.m., in the Chillicothe VA (Paint) Stadium. Hillsboro ousted Washington CH 6-2 in a sectional final at Hillsboro Thursday evening.

Winner of Tuesday’s game will advance to the district finals and play the winner of the Miami Trace-Waverly contest on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m., in Paint Stadium. Waverly edged Marietta 6-4 in the sectional finals at Waverly and Miami Trace blanked New Lexington 14-0 in the sectional finals at New Lexington.

In other sectional finals Thursday, Athens edged Jackson, 9-6, Sheridan slipped past Circleville, 8-7, Fairfield Union topped Logan Elm, 4-2, and Unioto edged Fairland 6-4 in eight innings.

In district semifinal games on Monday, May 14, Sheridan takes on Unioto at 5 p.m., at Paint Stadium. At 7 p.m., Athens will battle Fairfield Union in Paint Stadium.

The district tournament champions will advance to the Division II regionals at Zanesville on Thursday, May 24 at 2 and 5 p.m.

In Gallia Academy’s mercy-rule win over Chillicothe Thursday evening, the Blue Devils banged out 11 hits, took advantage of four Cavalier errors, seven walks, four stolen bases, three passed balls and two wild pitches to win their 21st game of the season against six setbacks. The Cavs bowed out of the 2012 season with a 9-14 record. It was Gallia Academy’s third win of the year over CHS.

Gallipolis scored in every inning Thursday. GAHS took a 1-0 lead in the first, led 2-0 after two and 6-1 after three. The Blue Devils added three runs in the fifth and iced it with a run in the sixth.

Winning pitcher Bailey faced 27 batters in the win. He fanned 16 and walked four. GAHS made two errors.

Losing pitcher Robbie Vest started for CHS. He gave up six runs on six hits, fanned two and walked five. Brandon Bonar relieved him in the fourth inning. Bonar gave up five runs on five hits, fanned three and walked two batters.

Derek Milliken and Seth McGuire were the only Cavs to hit safely off Bailey. McGuire had the lone RBI for Chillicothe.

For GAHS, Bailey, Jimmy Clagg, and Drew Young had two hits apiece. Other Blue Devils recording a hit were Ty Warnimont, John Faro, Gus Graham, Brandon Taylor and Zack Thomas.

Young had three RBI’s while Thomas had two.
