I believe Jayllen Carter of Portsmouth will be in this conversation before the middle of the season.......he had about 6 games in double figures last season, mostly coming off the bench........had 24 points vs. Ottawa-Glandorf in the state semifinals as a starter.

I though about it originally but decided to try to keep the list fairly short. I had a couple other guys whose names I threw around and Farmer was one of them. In reply to TrojanDave I also considered Carter. Wes Beam from Zane Trace, Javon Thompson from Chesapeake, and Doc Seip from Whiteoak all stood out as well. I have not seen this year's Athens or Portsmouth teams play so I cant really say if they have anyone else that could be mentioned with this group, maybe Sky Oliver and Allison next season. I think Beau Justice will have a good year statistically this season as well.bengalfan76 wrote:I would add Zach Farmer to the list of HMTribeManiac10 wrote:Just some thoughts(not in order)

Hayden Dunn from Valley will be in this conversation by the middle of the season.
Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
One player that I remember well from last year was the Maddox boy from Fairland. He was great on offense and defense. I believe he was only a Sophomore last year. Carter from Ironton was really impressive at the Convo. I think Jordan Kidd from Vinton County will have an awesome season as well. He is good on both sides of the ball.

Pretty sure Jayllen Carter of Portsmouth has as much credentials as anybody on anyone's list outside of the 2 Ironton studs, and Jayllen actually has done it where even those 2 haven't done it at.....in the final 4.....Just wanna reiterate, Jayllen scored 24 points at the final four game against Ottawa Glandorf. To me that trumps putting up good numbers in a sectional or a regular season game against the cracker jack team. Plus Jayllen had 6 or more double figure scoring games on a State tournament team.....Probably averaged around 13ppg last season. Double figures in the tourney too. People will take notice of him by the time the season is over! Wish they had the foresight to take note before hand but oh well.

Another one that could get on the radar IMO is Minford Sophomore Kenton Gullion, started every game for the Falcons last season, including breaking the school record with 10 three pointers in a single game. McBee, Howard, Rowe, Justice, and Stapleton(if eligible) could really open it up and get him even more looks, not to mention Jarred McCray on the inside, who could make his name noticed as well.

Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
Carter might be a top 5 player as the season progresses but to say he has the credentials of every player outside the Ironton two is ludicrous. A 24pt game in the tournament does not trump leading teams for multiple seasons. He was arguably their 4th best player last season. His play this season will move him up the list but I think most people would argue sitting him there from day one is a little presumptuous. IMO He needs to be the team's primary option for at least 5 games this season to be in contention.jgordon0315 wrote:Pretty sure Jayllen Carter of Portsmouth has as much credentials as anybody on anyone's list outside of the 2 Ironton studs, and Jayllen actually has done it where even those 2 haven't done it at.....in the final 4.....Just wanna reiterate, Jayllen scored 24 points at the final four game against Ottawa Glandorf. Lots of really good players mentioned.
Not top five, but one to keep an eye on is Matthew Freville from Sheridan.

Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
TribeManiac10: I think it's a guarantee that Jayllen Carter will be Portsmouth's main option for the entire season, barring injury.......Kyre Allison and Sky Oliver will certainly do their share, though........my main point in my original post is that he should be mentioned by the middle of the year, along with the others, not saying that he is better than any of them.......jgordon0315 does make a good point.......a 24 point game in front of 10,000 people on the biggest stage in Ohio high school basketball is pretty impressive to me, even if it's only 1 game, and even if I wasn't a Portsmouth fan. I watched him all year, and that was not his only good game.......he also led the team a couple of other times in scoring, once vs. Piketon, and came up with clutch plays in the 4th quarter of the regional final vs. Ironton......and he ended up a starter on a state runnerup team........that's making quite a big leap in only 1 year, the beginning of which was spent coming off the bench.
With his outstanding academic record, I think Jayllen has a real good opportunity at securing a basketball scholarship somewhere. He has adequate size at 6-2, and has shown the ability to score outside or drive to the bucket.......I think one of the keys to Jayllen's season will be the maturation of freshman Allison and sophomore Oliver teaming with Carter to give the Trojans a tough trio in the backcourt.

Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
There is no doubt that he has shown the potential to be a very good player and no disrespect was intended in my original arguement. Im sure he will expound upon his play further this season and cement his name among the others. I just thought the comment about his resume being possibly the third best of anyone in the southeast up to this point in time was a bit off base considering other players mentioned have been their teams' go to players for multiple seasons(some as far back as their freshman year) and a select few already have college scholarships(Lawson has multiple D1 offers). On a completely different note I was wondering about what Dion McKinley and Wayne Evans decided to do as far as their college choices were concerned. I thought I saw in a thread a while back that they were thinking about going to UC Clermont but I was not sure if that was what they eventually decided. Clermont had a team play in the college summer league at Thomas More College and I have not seen them. Most of the schools involved do not require their players to play in the league however. I was wondering because I would like to catch a few of their games if they are going to play anywhere relatively close to home.trojandave wrote:TribeManiac10: I think it's a guarantee that Jayllen Carter will be Portsmouth's main option for the entire season, barring injury.......Kyre Allison and Sky Oliver will certainly do their share, though........my main point in my original post is that he should be mentioned by the middle of the year, along with the others, not saying that he is better than any of them.......jgordon0315 does make a good point.......a 24 point game in front of 10,000 people on the biggest stage in Ohio high school basketball is pretty impressive to me, even if it's only 1 game, and even if I wasn't a Portsmouth fan. Carter is a very good player. Without his performance in the District Title game against Valley, Portsmouth doesn't make it past the Indians.

Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
What will be different for Jayllen Carter this year is that defenses will be geared more toward stopping him. He will no longer be the third or fourth option on a very good team. How he adjusts his game to become the "main guy" will determine if he is a Top 5 player in SEO. That's not to say that he will be gang of one, as reports on the young talent in Portsmouth have been glowing on this board. But being the first option will present him with new challenges both physically and mentally. I'll take Jayllen Carter on my team anyday.
Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
I think Jayllen Carter will have a good year. I think it might take him a few games to get use to being the main option after playing with McKinley and Evans last year who both had their opponent's best defensive players on them every game. Being the main option means more touches but it also means more attention from the defense. I am amazed at the job Coach Collins has done and from the sound of their summer ball they will be very competitive again even after losing some great players. It seems like someone keeps stepping up and I won't be surprised to see Carter do it this year. Tribe it won't surprise me to see Peebles have another fine season either. Losing Daniels has to hurt but I look for Arey and Justice to have good seasons.

Re: pre-season top 5 players in seo??
I think the District has some nice talent...with great potential. It will all play out during the season. D3 I do like Lawson (EB), Carter (PHS), Carter & Fletcher (Ironton), Arey & Justice (Peebles) and of course the big three from( Piketon ) Brabson, Moore, & Farmer. There is certainly other kids in the district that I could add to the list. I seen some nice young talent over the summer as well. The best will be determined on the court....is it November yet? :122245
