Warren Champion Wins Fifth State Title, Outduels Bloom-Carroll 2-0
Bloom-Carroll held hitless until seventh inning by Champion’s Lindsay Swipas
AKRON, Ohio – Warren Champion senior pitcher Lindsay Swipas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning to lead the fifth-ranked Golden Flashes to a 2-0 win over fourth-ranked Bloom-Carroll in the OHSAA Division III softball state championship game Saturday at Firestone Stadium.
It marks back-to-back titles for Champion (24-3) and now five overall (2012, 2011, 1994, 1980, 1974) in seven trips to the state tournament. Bloom-Carroll (29-4) was making its third trip to the state tournament after winning titles in their previous two appearances (2006, 2007).
Swipas (22-1) walked the bases loaded in the first inning, but escaped the jam without allowing a run and then allowed only two other base runners in the next five innings, both via walk. Bloom-Carroll senior Paige Reis led off the bottom of the seventh with a line drive single to left field to break up the no-hitter. She advanced to third on the play by an error, but Swipas notched a strikeout and two foul pop-outs to end the game.
Swipas struck out 10 and walked five in her quest to throw the third no-hitter in OHSAA state championship game history (Hope Gardner, Jeromesville Hillsdale in 1996 and Alanna Barker, Akron Springfield in 1993).
Champion scored both its runs in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by senior Alison Sorber and an RBI ground-out by junior Mackenzie Kiser. Kiser and senior Haley McAllister both had two hits for the Golden Flashes.
