This year's offense is quite a bit different! I don't remember the last Burg QB who was 22/30 passing in his first game under center. The balance of run and pass kept Ironton off balance and was able to get nearly 400 yards of offense.Bleeding Red wrote:Its the same offense they have been relying on for the past few years. Over 400 yards and a loss. That's both impressive and deflating. Sounds like they should have won. Burg 28 CG 26

Re: (0-1) Wheelersburg @ (1-0) Coal Grove
Would have liked to have seen the Burg in the no huddle against Ironton done a few quick snaps. There was more that one occassion that Ironton was still huddled up on defense and Burg was ready to snap the ball, they just didn't have the play in yet. Call two plays and really run the hurry up offense. It would defeinetly get a score on a long pass.
This will be a dogfight and Burg knows it. They have always struggled against CG up there. Burg needs to cut down on the turnovers and contain on the kickoffs. Burg has a great kicker in that he was putting down to the goalline on almost every kick but that can be a disadvantage because it gives the runner more room to maneuver before the contain can get to him.

There is a team in Jackson county that will have something to say about that.
I have to side with Bleeding Red on this one. There was a balance of run and pass but it was almost all with Eddie Miller. This is the same thing that the Burg did with Shears last year. Last year against Valley, Wheelersburg ran 60 plays. Shears carried it 32 times and threw it 17 times. That is over 81% of the offensive plays. Against West in 2011, the Pirates ran 42 plays. Shears had 19 carries and threw it 19 times. That is over 90% of the plays. Against Ironton on Friday, Wheelersburg ran 61 plays. Miller carried it 21 times and threw it 30 times (83+%).4th n Goal wrote:This year's offense is quite a bit different! Don't get me wrong, I love the spread and uptempo style that the Pirates are running. I think we need more of that in this area. However, if your best player is a 160 lb quarterback, you are going to need to find someone to take some of the carries off his shoulders in the big games left on the Pirates schedule. All those hits will start to add up against Coal Grove, Jackson, Minford, West, and Valley .

^^^^^^ This is why he is not the only option at QB. it was a tight battle for who would be QB this year I look for some switching as the year goes on^^^^^^

You have last yr and 1game this yr where the qb gets a lot of the action it's not like it's been the last 10 yes. 2 hrs ago you had shank at rb and shears at qb, 3-4 hrs ago you had weapons everywhere, Lang, shank, craigmiles, before that spradlin at qb who rarely ran.

You made my point for me. The Burg hasn't had the weapons the last two years, so they have rode the back of the best player on the team. Last year that was Shears. He was a much bigger kid than Miller and he seemed to be able to take a few more hits than it looks like Eddie's frame will be able to withstand.
Re: (0-1) Wheelersburg @ (1-0) Coal Grove
It looks like they have a lot more weapons this yr than last yr, they just aren't in the backfield. Miller has to throw them the ball rather than turn and hand it to them. A lot of his throws were 2-3 step quick throws. Miller got pretty good protection from his line, I don't remember him getting hit much on the pass plays. Miller had the ball in his hands a lot but I really don't remember him taking any big hits. I would take him off kickoff return, that's Not somewhere you want your qb.Crab's brother wrote:fbnut wrote:You have last yr and 1game this yr where the qb gets a lot of the action it's not like it's been the last 10 yes. 2 hrs ago you had shank at rb and shears at qb, 3-4 hrs ago you had weapons everywhere, Lang, shank, craigmiles, before that spradlin at qb who rarely ran.

Agree 100%. I am not saying he cant withstand it, but a kid his size is going to have a hard time taking 25 hits a game against a good schedule that Burg has coming up.Crab's brother wrote:fbnut wrote:You have last yr and 1game this yr where the qb gets a lot of the action it's not like it's been the last 10 yes. 2 hrs ago you had shank at rb and shears at qb, 3-4 hrs ago you had weapons everywhere, Lang, shank, craigmiles, before that spradlin at qb who rarely ran.

fbnut,
I would count the sack the big Culbertson kid got on him as a potentially significant shot, given that the kid is 6'4"-255lbs and landed flush on him on the run. The point being made is just a need for more balance over the course of the season. I think we all agree that E Miller is an outstanding talent at QB. The reality is, when a QB is running the ball 20+ times a game, it doesn't take a lot of hits in the passing game to add up over the course of a 10 game regular season; and, with an offense that utilizes the pass as often (and solidly) as the Pirates, the number of times a sack or hit on him in the passing game could occur goes up significantly. I just don't want to see the Pirates chances at an excellent season be changed due to an unforeseen injury to their best player. That's always frustrating to see happen to good football teams.

Re: (0-1) Wheelersburg @ (1-0) Coal Grove
I am guessing they would probably like to keep him under 10 carries a game and 15-20 passes a game thats just a guess. Every qb in the area is going to get hit hard a few times a game, my point was even on his designed runs I really dont remember him getting hit all that hard, I'm talking getting stood up and defenders coming in and drilling him or getting drilled as he was going out of bounds. I wouldnt judge how the burg coaches are going to use him just yet. They may have determined thats what they had to do in this one game. shank carried the ball about 35-40 times as well as playing ILB against valley a few yrs back but that was a 1 time thing. I remember lewis's first yr at the burg he had a kid named weaver at qb and that kid probably had the ball in his hand 90% of the time in week 1 vs ironton and he took a beating, after that game i said the same thing everone is saying now about miller"he will never last" but his workload was pretty much the same the entire yr and his size was pretty comparable to miller. Miller has many more weapons to work with than weaver did though.

I'm not buying that.
If you are talking about 02, that team would have had Webb, Dunham, young Kaskey and Stephenson. We will see how it plays out, but I think Weaver had more to work with as far as options goes than what Eddie does now.
