Coach Ron Hinton’s Chillicothe Cavaliers will visit Gallipolis’ Memorial Field for the 2012 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League football opener for both schools.
Kickoff time is 7:30 p.m., following the 11th annual GAHS Athletic Hall of Fame introductions at 6:30 p.m.
Chillicothe enters the game with a misleading 1-4 non-league record while GAHS begins conference play with a 3-2 non-league mark.
The Cavs are averaging 16.4 ppg while GAHS is averaging 35 ppg. The Cavs are giving up 34.6 points a game while GAHS is giving up 18.8 ppg. Chillicothe opened the year with a 52-33 loss to Hamilton Twp., then lost 22-19 to Big Walnut. After beating Portsmouth West 24-7. CHS lost to Dayton Thurgood, 56-6 and Columbus DeSales, 34-0.
Gallia Academy opened its season with a 52-34 win over high-scoring Athens, then lost back-to-back games to Licking Hts., 21-7 and Ironton, 14-13. Last week, the Blue Devils beat Vinton County, 40-12.
Hilton has eight starters (five offensives and three defensive) back from last year’s team that lost 19-7 to the Blue Devils in Chillicothe. Chillicothe lost six players via graduation from last year’s team.
It will be the 11th game between the two schools. The series is tied at 5-5.
Key returnees are Ryan Mathis, quarterback-defensive back, Tim Beard, running back-outside linebacker, Isiah Johnson, tight end-defensive lineman, Josh Leonard, lineman, Jack Stetzer, lineman, Tyler Howard, lineman, Adam Bixler, wingright- defensive back, Luke Barnes, wingright-defensive back and Caylib Holt, outside linebacker.
Hinton is in his fourth year at Chillicothe, but has a career coaching record of 288-83-3.
In last year’s GAHS win, the Blue Devils ran 63 plays to the Cavs 27, and out first downed CHS, 19-4. Gallipolis totaled 333 yards rushing and passing while the Cavs totaled 105.
Cody Russell ran for 66 yards in 17 attempts and scored one touchdown. Russell also caught three passes for 44 yards in that Blue Devil win. Wade Jarrell completed seven of eight passes for 65 yards with one interception.
Isiah Johnson caught four passes for 86 yards and one touchdown to pace CHS in 2011. QB Mathis completed seven of 11 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown last year.
