MSJ beat an outmanned Olivet squad tonight 88-57. Andy Countryman played very well and scored 14pts. Jake only had 2pts and had 2 assists, Travis Combs scored 2pts, Jordan Mitchell had 3pts, and Jordan Payne was scoreless. DePauw will be a much tougher test tomorrow.

MSJ lost to a very strong DePauw team today 39-59. Not much difference in the teams talent wise(DePauw was a little bigger, had 2 6'9" post players and a 6'6" small forward) but our offensive execution was atrocious and I blame that mainly on the style of offense they run.We telegraphed passes and bricked threes(3-16 at one point) all game long. They only run one play and it seems as though the only purpose it has is to highlight three point shooters(6 of our first 7 shots were threes), almost no pick and roll or feeds to the post were utilized. This is fine against weaker opponents who they can get open shots off against but against experienced teams this stagnates the flow of the rest of their game. Also, I think this severely missuses some of our key pieces. Forward David Mann(who was all conference and the team's leading scorer last season at 14ppg) is averaging 2.5 ppg, Jake Daniels who is the only true center on the squad and is the only player capable of scoring in or guarding the post against a team that size(which he proved today having 4rebs in the first half and not allowing a single point in the post) is cemented at the volleyball line setting screens and passing the ball to open shooters and played only about 3mins in the second half, starting 4 man Ken Kunkel would be a great pick and pop/roll player but almost all of the points he has scored this season(around 5ppg) have been from beyond the three point line, and Travis Combs(who was a first team all state player in high school) has played a collective 5 mins in 2 games which haven't been close behind a few people he shouldn't play behind in my opinion. It is early on in the season, DePauw would be one of the best teams in their league, and it will take them a while to learn to play together as a team but it was pretty frustrating watching the game today.

Southern state lost to a very good Sinclair team 86-83. Great game to watch. Felt like a heavy weight fight. Both teams had a lead of 8 points in both halves! We went up 83-82 with a minute to go. Couldn't get a stop. Hillsboro high school grad Tyrand Cumberland continues to shoot lights out! He finished with 4 threes for 12 points.

Now 4-1 on the year

Does SSCC play Miami Middletown this year? MSJ played them this summer and came away with a 2 or 3pt win but I was really impressed with them as a whole. They are not a huge team this year(2 starting post players are 6'6"/6'7" and 6'5") but they are VERY athletic and love to get the ball down the floor quickly.

coach mink,
can players play 4 years at southern state? are all of your players freshmen? if so, and you can keep them all together sounds like you guys will be strong for years to come.
still would like to see some local players on the future roster.

We do play Miami Middletown. That will be a battle similar to Sinclair. They beat Sinclair by 8. Was a 1 point game late. Heard the same thing about there bigs.

Kids can play 4 years but we will do our best to get our kids recruited to the next level if it's right for the kid. We should return a core group though. Will always look for local talent.

Southern state is now 6-2. Won AT Sinclair 89-64!! Believe it is the first time SSCC has ever beaten Sinclair. Huge win for our kids and the program. Ty Harris (point guard) had a triple double with 15 points, 10 assists, and 11 rebounds. Isiah walton had 20 points and 18 rebounds and Diondrey Holt Jr had 19 points. Tyrand cumberland was injured with either bruised or cracked ribs. Should be back in action soon.

We play at Valor Christian College (previous harvest prep bible college) friday night. They are currently 8-0 and ranked #1 in the USCAA division 2.

They live in apartments together in Hillsboro. Starving college kids! If we had dorms and a cafeteria, we mite go undefeated!!! ;)

Travis Mcavene has contacts all over. Aau coaches from Columbus and Louisville provide a lot of kids that didn't get grades or were not recruited.

An update on MSJ's season. They are coming off 2 straight wins. They beat Bluffton by 2 and Earlham by 16. Their record sits at 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They only won 3 conference games all season last year so this is definately an improvement. As far as local guys go sophomore Andy Countryman and freshman Jake Daniels are both starting for the lions. Andy is averaging around 10ppg. Jake is still trying to adjust to the college game, more specifically a Princeton offense which is a big change for a kid who played his entire high school career as a traditional post. Freshman Jordan Payne is also getting very good time off the bench. He doesn't get many shots but he is certainly contributing on the court. Travis Combs and Jordan Mitchell haven't played since the first two games. This is just a product of shear numbers. We have more players than probably anybody else in the HCAC. Some guys who have hung around from last year's team are getting minutes that probably should be going to Combs. I see the value of experience at this level but I'm sure it is frustrating for a player who is probably more talented than a few of the other kids playing ahead of him to not get much time. If we can keep everybody together next season he should move himself much higher in the rotation. The lions' next game is tomorrow(Saturday) at home against Anderson University. Should be a competitive game.

Glad to hear MSJ doing better.

Southern State won a big game tonight. 93-87 over Valor at their place. They were 8-0 coming into the game and ranked 3rd nationally in the uscaa d2. We were down 11 with 10 min to go. 54-43. Then led 88-80 with 2 to go. Kam Harris dominated the second half run scoring 24 in the second half of his game high 32. Tyrand Cumberland hit 2 big free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win.

Now 7-2 on the year.

MSJ moved to 3-0 in conference, 4-2 overall, on the season tonight against Anderson University. The Mount stays atop the HCAC standings with the 63-59 victory. David Mann led the Lions with 22pts. Former Peebles teammates Jacob Daniels(14pts, 9rebs, 4 assists, 1blk) and Andy Countryman(13pts and 5 assists) both had impressive showings.
