Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
Talking of Portsmouth or Ironton getting into the SOC II is old news. The SOC does not want either school, PERIOD!! If they did they would have already been asked or approached by the league. PHS is 1-3 against the SOC II and Ironton is 1-0. There was a day when Portsmouth was the big man in the county,,those days are gone---LONG GONE. Letting PHS or Ironton into the league is just not for helping PHS football,, i.e. 1-3 record, it is about creating a even better league for the SE OHIO area. Each week would be a game that has either team not being able to look ahead, each game should have a really good gate since the farthest drive is just down the road a ways. PHS would really help the league in basketball and Ironton would as well. Football, Ironton would be a threat to win the league most years with PHS maybe every once in a while,, but based on recent facts it will be some time before PHS is a threat in football. Now, having given my two cents worth,,,,WE ALL KNOW THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN BECAUSE THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY OF YOU OUT THERE THAT WILL NOT LET GO OF THE PAST!! Thank you,,wipala

wipala,
I agree with you. I think adding them both would be a tremendous boost for the league in all sports, both girls and boys, but sadly I doubt it happens any time soon.

Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
From what I understand after talking to 2 ADs and several coaches is that the OVC and SOC 2 have entered an agreement where there will be an SOC vs OVC matchup for each team during league play since both will now have 5 teams with River Valley leaving after next season. I know that RH vs Minford will be moving from week 1 to later in the season after next year meaning both those teams will need to find a week one opponent.
Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
For years the SOCII was a five team league not until we added Valley did it change to six teams. When Valley made the lateral move the SOCI didnt add a sixth team so why would the SOCII.Axe N Shield wrote:maniac66 wrote:I have to agree ports or Ironton will never be voted in.
One reason I think most are happy with the size of the league now the other politics pure and simple.
I do believe Ports will be heading to the ovc and be welcomed with open arms.
As for Ironton they will still be Nomads and roam for teams to play reguardless of size.
Be nice to see Ironton in a league again but they are not and I understand why but still wish they was in one.
This question pertains to the bold highlighted above. Does this mean that the SOC II doesn't plan to replace Northwest in their division?
Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
Here is the sticking point holding this from ever happening. The SOC is one conference with two divisions. Being such each member of the conference, NOT THE DIVISION has a vote on accepting new members. So East, Notre Dame, Green South Webster, Oak Hill, Clay, New Boston, Symmes Valley along with the current SOCII schools have to be able to get a majority vote. Does anybody who is on this site think that will ever happen with either Ironton or Portsmouth. If it was just a division vote I think they may be able to pull enough votes but it will never happen no matter how much we would like to see it.

So, schools that don't have football vote on it as well! With that being the meaning; then why not let them just be in for football and other sports agreed on by the members and the school in question! They wouldn't necessarily have to join the league in every sport; maybe just the big 4; football, basketball {boys & girls}, baseball and softball! I don't know... I just think there is something that can be done to make the SOC better and stronger; especially in the smaller division! The bigger division is really pretty dang good. Just thought Ironton would definetly make SOC II stronger and better...not Portsmouth!noles_fan wrote:Here is the sticking point holding this from ever happening. I will not say that Ironton will never be invited into the SOC or OVC. I really believe that the more Columbus cuts funding the more creative schools will have to be. Ironton would be a good gate in revenue sports.
Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
The Harbin points system is about as fair a way to determine the playoffs as you.can have. It does however have flaws and Ironton is one school that really takes advantage of it. For instance playing oak hill and raceland ky next year. Both teams will probably win 7 or 8 games and will be relatively easy wins for Ironton and a points bonanza. Basically Kentucky schools only play the four district games that have any bearing on their playoffs. The other 6 are played for pride and revenue, so they are more than happy to play Ironton because a loss really means nothing.
So if Ironton can continue to get these games, being in a conference is no big deal.

Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
Ironton was locked into the playoffs this year after just 5 wins and neither of those wins were Oak Hill or Raceland, KY. Ironton's "points bonanza" has come from Ashland and Wheelersburg!!
Re: Join SOC: Ironton or Portsmouth?
the second and third level points are what is important. if you beat schools that dont beat anybody then you get squat!! ashland the burg russell gallia all have good teams and we beat them ergo we earn points. porstmouth almost nothing....siderman wrote:The Harbin points system is about as fair a way to determine the playoffs as you.can have. I don't think they do third level any more do they? Just first and second.tl895 wrote:the second and third level points are what is important. if you beat schools that dont beat anybody then you get squat!! ashland the burg russell gallia all have good teams and we beat them ergo we earn points. porstmouth almost nothing....siderman wrote:The Harbin points system is about as fair a way to determine the playoffs as you.can have. And to be clear, I'm not dogging Ironton, I think playing schools like that is very smart. I would like to see West do this in the future. You have to schedule teams that will win games. You mentioned Portsmouth. They are down for sure, but even when they are descent they will still only win 6-7 games because of their tough schedule. Over the long hall, an Oak Hill, Raceland, Piketon, etc will give you alot more points.
