11/2 - IRONTON 41 vs Bloom-Carroll 16 - FINAL

Post by caglewis »

ALMOST GAME TIME - GO IRONTON FIGHTING TIGERS
On the radio on WIRO 1230 AM - granted not a powerful station with wide range.
Jason Philyaw and Kevin Anthonee with the call - they're the best
But it's also on the internet: http://www.foxsports1230.com/main.html
Click on LISTEN LIVE at the top left corner then on PLAY STATION in the middle

We've had a nice 2 days here in Ironton - temps into the mid-50's and sunny for most of the day with a little breeze - should bode well for field drying after the earlier rains.

IT = IRONTON FIGHTING TIGERS ......... BC = BLOOM-CARROLL BULLDOGS

B-C won toss and deferred - BC kicking .. IT receiving

ugh, that's inexcusable. Giving up a 44 yard TD pass as the clock runs out in the 1st half. You can not do that, period. What a momentum poop, total defensive breakdown.

I'm a little afraid of "jinxing", but I never heard J & K say anything about "slippery footing" tonight, so the field must have been in great shape given the rain in the past week. As I said earlier we had 2 nice mostly sunny, breezy days yesterday and today. Thanks for all the effort put into maintaining Bob Lutz Field - the folks who do that don't get enough credit!!
I wonder if there's ever been a season so rain-free as this one? Both at home and away.
It feels to me like I remember many games in the past when J & K had trouble reading the jersey numbers because of mud. And I know I remember a playoff game played in pouring rain.
I also find it hard to believe that there were empty seats for a PLAYOFF GAME on this beautiful evening - should have been packed house inside and a crush around the fence outside. Why not?

IRONTON — Thanks to a huge rushing attack by Ironton, the Fighting Tigers opened up their Ohio Division IV playoff run Friday with a 41-16 win over Bloom-Carroll at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

Ironton (7-3) received a herculean from senior star running back Patrick Lewis, who accounted for 320 of the 418 rushing yards the Fighting Tigers generated.

Ironton scored all six of its touchdowns on the ground.

Lewis racked up 258 of his yards after halftime while scoring three times in the second half and four times for the game.

The final score was not indicative of what the game was like in the first half.

The teams jockeyed for field position and momentum during the first half of play. Lewis scampered in from eight yards out on the game’s opening position to give Ironton a 7-0.

The Bulldogs (5-6) picked up a fumble on Ironton’s second possession and converted it into a score. Kelly Milliser connected with Tyler Sorg from 14 yards out to equal the game, 7-7.

After the teams traded punts, Bloom-Carroll was forced to punt again and the snap went over the punter’s head and he had to fall on the ball on his own 4-yard line. The Fighting Tigers capitalized on the mistake with a quarterback keeper by Tanner Dutey from 1-yard out, which put them up, 14-7.

The Bulldogs were able to close out the first half with a touchdown pass as the clock expired. Milliser and Sorg hooked up again, this time from 44 yards.

The point-after-touchdown kick failed and Ironton kept a slim 14-13 lead at halftime.

To open the second half, Bloom-Carroll was able to seize the momentum it gained at the break and took its first lead with a 23-yard field goal by Dominic Garris that put them up, 16-14.

However, thanks to the strong running of Lewis and a stout second half defensive effort, Ironton dominated the remainder of the game.

The senior running back got churning on his team’s first drive, breaking a 53-yard touchdown run to put his team up again, 20-16.

Following a few punts by each team, Lewis found the end zone once more, this time on the first play of Ironton’s drive from 64 yards out and the lead expanded to 27-16.

A 24-yard TD run by Lewis made it 34-16 with 7:04 remaining.

One more score by Ironton, this time by Trevor White on a 1-yard run, cemented the game.

Lewis’ 320 rushing yards was his career high. His previous high came earlier this year when he ran for 261 yards.

The Fighting Tiger defense provided fuel for their offense. Ironton was able to limit the Bulldog passing game in the second half, something it struggled with the first half of play.

After Milliser had an 8-for-15 first half for 121 yards, the junior completed just four passes in the second half for 61 yards.

In total, the Bloom-Carroll had just 279 yards of total offense compared to Ironton’s 482.
With the victory, the Tigers will head on the road for the second next week as they will have a rematch with Johnstown-Morrone, who beat Indian Valley on Friday.

This appeared in today's [Sunday, 11/4] online edition of the Ironton Tribune.
It was posted as a "comment" to the story of Ironton's win over Bloom-Carroll in the sports section. As an Ironton fan, this makes me ashamed.
R. Fetherolf November 4, 2012 at 1:02 pm
I am an alumnus of Bloom Carroll High School and have been watching high school sports for over 30 years. I have some serious concerns after participating as a spectator/parent in last night’s playoff game which took place in Ironton.

First, I do not understand why Ironton fans were allowed to sit on the Bloom Carroll side, right behind our student section? When I first realized this, I moved closer to the middle of the stands and away from the Ironton spectators. At some point during the game an adult male and 2 teenage girls began harassing and taunting our students and were even spouting racial slurs to one of our African-American students. There were plenty of seats in the Ironton stands during the entire game. I heard from many people, who have experienced playing Ironton and even those who are from Ironton, that warned about the Ironton fans, however, I was not aware of this prior to the game. Apparently, they are notorious for sitting on the visitor’s side. When asked why they were sitting on our side, they responded, “It’s a free country, I can sit wherever I want to sit.” This ruined what was the last football game for some of our senior student fans and needs to be addressed in the future. If I had known what was going on during the game, I would have found a police officer and reported it. I was busy trying to watch the game , which happened to be my son’s (a senior) last football game. This is the first time in 12 years that Bloom Carroll has qualified for the playoffs. We (Bloom Carroll) traveled a long way and did not deserve to have it tainted by this type of unsportsmanlike atmosphere at a high school sporting event.

Another incident I heard about from players and others: during the game an adult male from Ironton was standing along the fence directly behind our players & talking to them (encouraging? distracting?) and someone was making derogatory remarks to our cheerleaders.

We need to protect the integrity and tradition of high school sports. What should have been a good experience was turned sour by what was allowed to occur at this event.

I agree caglewis. There are many Ironton faithful who would not tolerate this type of nonsense. I wish it would have been reported, or taken to some sort of authoritian at the game. However, I cant imagine the chain gang allowing the taunting to their players or distracting them to occur, if it was as distracting as said, the players should have mentioned it to their coach, or the assistant coaches. I saw where Southeastern Ohio Sports Photos took some great pictures of the cheerleaders having fun and making memories at the Tank. Its sad that a few ignorant people can label our community.

Im very highly skeptical about the comments that BC fan made. With it being week 11 that very well could have been fans from another school coming and doing that. I know Tiger fans can be a very vocal bunch, but mostly towards the officials and certain fan groups (portsmouth & rock hill) comes to mind. Im highly skeptical that these incidents occurred.

What koolaid? If that did happen it was probably someone who team wasnt in the playoffs coming to our game full of koolaid trying to besmirch the good name of the Tigers.

I was also at the game, and the letter was exactly CORRECT. it was very sad to see this behavior. My son is also on the BC team and told me about the 2 Ironton fans behind our bench making negative comments to our Players and Coaches. I am from Southern Ohio and am ashamed to say the least that Ironton "fan" would act like this. Very disrespectful.
Tigercannon....They had Ironton Jacket/shirts on, I dont think they were from another school. I is just sad that people would act like this.
