There is also a Big difference between Greg Estep and Curt Clifford....someone had mentioned that the speed was different in Fla. And N.C......that depends on what kid youre speaking about...kids can run all over the Country, not just those two states,sorry...If you know Football,You know football,it dont matter where you coach at, that was one of Curts biggest problem....He had absolutely no idea how to recognize talent.none...and who said Yes for Ted Newsome,lmao...can you say cliffords Identical twin twice.Wtf...They might as well keep Curt if theyre going to stick with anything they have...theres not a coach down there that knows Football better than Curt,get the point...it would be Pointless...Greg Estep wants the Job. Ted Newsome is the best answer for Portsmouth. He has had to wait his turn under difficult circumstances. It is different when you are the head coach. When you are in command...you command!

The point I was making about the speed differences is the frustration that Greg Estep could encounter once he returns. Returning to Portsmouth might not be the best fit for him.

I believe that Andy Hall would be a terrific head coach at Portsmouth.

However, Ted Newsome is next in line for the job.

Whoever the next head coach is must make DEFENSE a top priority to bring our football program back to respectability.......until DEFENSE returns to Portsmouth football, whoever the head coach is will struggle to be successful.

15-35 over the last 5 years........mostly because of a porous DEFENSE. Teams scoring 30+, 40+, 50+, and even 60+ points happened way too often. Wheelersburg scored 68 points in handing the Trojans the first home loss in the Coliseum.

I have no preference whatsoever as to who the next head coach should be........I just would like for my football Friday nights to be more fun........not asking for a state championship, just a competitive team that has a chance to win in the 4th quarter. Went to all 10 games this year, and wished it could have been better for the kids, coaches, parents, and myself.

cant imagine PHS passing up on on Estep.. I dont know the guy at all but I know for sure Michael Estep is the best HS coach in the county and the guy at NB ain't chopped liver ... thats good lineage right there , and it seems he has already been highly successful in NC ... seems like a no brainer to me . Hopefully whoever is hired succeeds , the city needs a strong football program . it helps young men grow. MD

Greg Estep was the QB in 1998 and 1999 although several games were missed in 1999 do to suffering a broken hand. If I remember correct he won all Ohio honors and took a baseball scholarship to EKU. His brother Mike Estep baseball coach at Burg, while his other brother Jon is the girls basketball coach at New Boston.

Everything that I have heard is Greg is interested but idk if he has yet submitted a application. I personally have yet to see an actuall listing for the position and I have checked ohsaa and department of education a little while back.

Don't forget that his other big brother, Jason, is the head coach at Charlotte Christian that Greg coached under in his time there guiding the team to a state championship.

Jason Estep just won the North Carolina State Championship tonight, I beleive that is his second. Also look in the PDT Friday's paper at the BuckEyes recruiting update on page 10 Jeb Blazevich plays for Jason he is a rated one of the top ten TE in the country for 2014.

These are Christian School state championships.

Congratulations, but it doesn't mean the same as winning the entire state of North Carolina when the majority of these schools are around Charlotte in the 11-man football playoffs.

Notice that they also have an 8-man football playoffs, too.

I am not attempting to dog them, but just thought those who are making the decision about Portsmouth's next head football coach might want to know about the entire story about the "state championships".

Let me get this straight.

We are going to celebrate a "state championship" for being the best of 5 teams. We are going to package the Esteps in Portsmouth as the next best greatest thing because they won the "state championship" in North Carolina out of 5 teams. We are going to say that the Esteps are the best choice to be the next head football coach at Portsmouth because they have won the "state championship" out of 5 teams in a Christian School football league.

Is that correct?

To such a person, it's more than just a job; it's a passion and a labor of love. A clear example is Coach Harmon at Wayne, WV, a home-grown boy coaching his beloved alma mater.

I knew Coach Clifford casually; he useta scout Peake a week or two before they played, and he had certainly recognized talent then, roughly ten years ago.

Now I dunno what happened in Trojan country, if the talent pool became shallow or what, but we see such cycles in almost every high school. Amanda Clearcreek is a case in point, as are Grafton and Weirton in WV, and Rock Hill & South Point here.(BTW, Pointer Nation, before you call for Coach Marcello's head, remember that Harmon went 0-10 in his first year at Wayne,)

So, Trojan Nation, I hope you make your voices heard in a positive way to those responsible for hiring your new coach, and, whoever he is, you SUPPORT him and remember that he will most likely not be able to restore football glory to Portsmouth in one season. It'll hafta be rebuilt from the ground up.

What can be wrong is if you are hiring from within a losing structure. If the program continues to decline then why I you promoting a coach that has assisted that decline? That is what raises questions. If he was a qualified coach would the players he personally worked with not have improved under his guidance? It can be a very big risk to promote from within a declining system. He may have the best of intentions, but that doesn't make him the right fit. Sometimes the best fit is someone from outside.
