What about Andy Hall from Jackson? He has ties to the area and could be a good "outsider" to come in and rebuild the program with his dad helping him...just a thought :12224

I believe that Andy Hall would be a terrific head coach at Portsmouth.

However, Ted Newsome is next in line for the job.

Right there is the problem with Portsmouth. To say someone is next in line is silly. The school needs to take the best possible coach you can find. Just because you are a good assitant coach doesnt make you a good head coach. West did the same thing in the early 90's when Tipton left they promoted Gibson to head coach and set the whole program back 15 years. That not a shot at Gibson, I respected the man as a coach and played for him but he just wasnt a head coach.

You knock the Estep brothers about their State championships.....but the fact is they are still proven winners!!! They're at least doing some winning, something Clifford and his assts didn't so very much of his last 5 years. They constantly coach D1 talent, and obviously know what to do with it.

I have stated numerous times on these two websites that Ted Newsome is most knowledgable due to his dedication to the game, community, and our children. He is a good coach. He will be a great head coach given the opportunity.

It takes a while to learn to command. He has never had the opportunity to hold the decision-making button in football. However, the time is now to give it to him.

I am sure that the Esteps are most capable of becoming the head coach at Portsmouth (either one of them). However, Ted Newsome is the one who will be the one who takes Portsmouth to the State Championship game for the first time.

I am sure of it.

Kentucky trojan good luck with that. By all means pass on another Estep it has worked out well for you so far. With all the controversy this year in trojan land they would be crazy to hire in house. But the school board hasnt made very good choices so far they stood by and watched the program fall to the lowest it has ever been.

No, it was at its lowest in 1978 when PHS went 0-10. This is when Bob Shaffer stepped in as head coach from 1979-1985.

If not Ted Newsome, then I could live with Coach Shaffer as our head coach once again.

My question is this:

Why are the problems associated with Ted Newsome? He was a loyal steward of Clifford during the good and bad years. Clifford made all of the decisions. (Remember, this was Clifford's program!) Newsome has never been given the opportunity to be the decision maker as the head football coach.

Given the opportunity, Newsome will turn the program around and lead it to the State Championship game.

In regards to hiring a new coach from outside, what teaching jobs will be available?

People talk about bringing in a coach, but I doubt that the Portsmouth schools can pay somebody $70k just to coach football. Most families can't handle a $10k income cut, so even if there are teaching positions, that is a factor.

Also what does a candidate's wife do for a living? Sometimes there aren't jobs in our region for people working in fields besides education or health care. A recent transplant/coach in the area had a wife whose degree was designed to work in the fashion industry. Needless to say she couldn't find good work, and they suffered financially until they left.

Why do Southern Ohio and Appalachian schools largely seem to recycle the same coaches? Because anybody who has lived elsewhere can't afford to move back.

What content area does Coach Estep teach? If he is teaching at a private school out-of-state, there is the possibility that he is not certified to teach in the Ohio public school system.

I hope that Portsmouth can find a coach who can afford dedicate himself to the kids in the program and it's success without sacrificing the financial security of his family.

Ky -Trojan , having been an assist coach I agree with your point.. I dont know Mr Newsome at all, but it seems like it would be a tough sell.... It certainly wouldnt be fair to scratch his name off consideration because he was part of the staff. been there , lived that .

Nate Cadogan (Penn St), Jon Pryor (FSU then to Ohio), and I can't remember the exact year Gerald Cadogan (Penn St) graduated, so I'm not sure he fits in the "last 5 years" category.

Gerald Cadogan graduated in 2004 from Portsmouth.

He is now on the Toronto Argonauts practice squad.
