I am sure that there have been very some good football coaches who have expressed interest in the Portsmouth job.
The question remains, "Can any of those good candidates be put into teaching spots in the Portsmouth Schools?"
What teaching jobs are going to be open? What teaching certifications do the candidates carry? Can any of the candidates afford to move to the Portsmouth area?

Re: Portsmouth Trojan's Next Head Football Coach
After speaking to one of the applicants this week. I believe there are several great candidates within the 40 plus that have applied. He was under the impression though that there maybe a candidate that is unexpected to most of us although several have thrown him out as a option. If said candidates wants it and to return to Portsmouth I believe it would be hard to pass him up.
Question although teaching jobs are not readily available at the moment. Doesn't the teachers union retirement agreement change in the next year and if some don't retire they will lose some of thier retirement? If so won't we have positions coming up soon? Would any of the candidates be willing to sub for a year till a position opened? I know one candidate that said he would be willing to do exactly that. Just some food for thought as the deadline nears.
I will be there to support whoever our next coach is, I hope everyone else will do the same. I only state that because I have heard rumors of transfers if the boys don't get the candidate if thier choice, I hate to think that they would have no more school pride then that but everyone has to live thier own lives.

If said candidate is once again...Greg Estep.....then once again...he has no experience coaching in a public school system.Trojan_FB_Alum wrote:After speaking to one of the applicants this week. My understanding of the retirement issue was that it would begin in the Fall of 2015; therefore, teachers would have to retire in the Spring of 2014 or lose some of their retirement benefits.
If the players want to transfer because they do not get their choice, then let them. This is not college football where you can transfer without penalty if your coach leaves. These high school players will lose a year of eligibility unless they provide a change of residency.

KT
Although I believe Greg aswell as the individual I spoke to would both be great choices no it is not estep I am talking about at this time.
That is my basic understanding of the contract aswell. That being said a coach would most likely have to sub for one year before a position became available the candidate I spoke with was more then willing to make that sacrifice for the good of the team.
As for the transfer I agree if that's how they feel about it good lick to you don't like the door hit you on the way out. You are right there are rules in place but we both know there are was around them we have seen it happen before.

Re: Portsmouth Trojan's Next Head Football Coach
Greg hasn't coached at a public school but he grew up in one ( Portsmouth) and knows how things are here. He has also only been a winner. He is also I would assume one of the few if not the only coach to have coached at a professional level (baseball stregnth and conditioning). He has a proven track record of success that is indisputable. Is he the most qualified impossible for me to tell without knowing all candidates. Is he qualified yes as was the candidate I spoke with as is the candidate he brought up to me as are the candidates inside every one has their oppinion on who is best hopefully the powers that be weigh all candidates and find the best fit.

Does Portsmouth have a policy against double dipping? There will be a lot of retirement but if there is no pilcy against, the school could simply rehire the retired teacher IF they want to.

We do all realize at one time Bob Lutz only head coaching experience was at a private school right? Everyone starts some where.

Re: Portsmouth Trojan's Next Head Football Coach
Prediction time:
I told myself that I would wait until December 1st to make my prediction; therefore, here it is.
I would like either Ted Newsome, Mike Sammons, or Bob Shaffer (if any of them applied) to be the next head coach at PHS.
However, I believe that the PTB would like to have Greg Estep as the next head coach.
Have I heard anything from the inside? No.
I just believe that he will be the next head coach.
Good luck to whomever is selected.

This process has been very interesting to follow..one thing that has come out of this
is,,imo,,,positive comments are being made about the program. I, like our friend, Kentucky
has stated,,,,,bring PHS back to some better years in the sport.. Many others have
said the samething....I really hope the boe makes a wise decision.......Go Trojans

Re: Portsmouth Trojan's Next Head Football Coach
Sammons would be a great hire. He's at a good age for a coach he has experience coaching in similar situations and he knows how to have success in the playoffs. He's always did a great job at west of scheduling tough, state-championship caliber opponents, which prepared us for the post-season. The football team at Notre dame has also sustained success while he has been there as the athletic director. The question is: would he leave a good job at Notre Dame to rebuild at Portsmouth. Bob is a great guy and a good coach, but I couldn't see him sticking around longer than a few years.

Re: Portsmouth Trojan's Next Head Football Coach
The next couple of days will be very interesing at Portsmouth. I have heard that along with the older and experienced coaches, that there have been some young applicants as well. Will Portsmouth start fresh with a young head coach?
