Yeah, 93Dog, it's been a crazy start to the season. LE was playing beyond my expectations through the first four games with three new starters. Gotta hit the boards better after what Athens did. When does Athens-VC play?

... I'm trying to get my "napkin sheets" loaded with the games I need scores for while I'm in the hospital this coming weekend before Christmas break for most teams...

... took this off of the C103 website ... not sure how Hillsboro is playing 3 games on 12/22 and I have Fairland playing at Piketon while C103 has Fairland playing North Adams ... if anyone can clear these conflicts up I would appreciate it ...

North Adams is playing Coal Grove in the Ironton classic on the 22nd. Ironton had originally put Fairland with them, until Fairland told them they couldnt play the 22nd because of playing at Piketon.

I have a digitally signed contract from Fairland and and email from their AD stating they are coming to Piketon! lol I found this out about 3 weeks ago, and through emails with Fairland and Ironton found out about the mixup. North Adams school website has game with Coal Grove, C103 hasnt updated theirs.

... over my many years of observing high school hoops I have obviously watched outstanding offensive TEAMS in Southern/Southeastern Ohio and obviously the goal in basketball IS TO OUTSCORE your opponent to get the "W" ... I probably enjoy outstanding defensive TEAMS even more than teams that put up tons of points though ... luckily Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line we have many coaches who have a defensive philosophy that emphasizes play at the defensive end of the floor as much as or even more so than the offensive end - Coach Davis (Chesapeake), Coach Maddox (Warren), Coach Combs (Vinton Co.), Coach Stiverson (Logan Elm), Coach LaFon (Ironton), Coach Barrick (Wheelersburg), Coach Speed (Fairland) to name a few ... I know that Coach Stiverson (LE) preaches/teaches holding the LE opponent to less than 50 points per game - and I feel confident in saying that the other head men mentioned teach/stress the same philosophy "first team to 50 wins" ... with this in mind I thought I would give hoops fans Below the Line an idea where the regions top teams stand vs this philosophy looking at both sides of the court offensive points per game vs defensive points allowed per game ...

The zone defense coach Skinner likes to run is only in the beginning stages of its real potential ... you have to put into perspective what the young pups have ahead of them in terms of physical growth and mental experience ... with the 22 game schedule and probably some tourney success, its safe to say BURROW, LEUHRMAN, LEUHRMAN, WATSON & SALTZMEN will be playing game 5 of 70 tomorrow night. (may be more than 70 - but probably at least 70) ...

GAME 5 - OF - 70 ... that is crazy when you look it that way ... their length, athleticism, knowledge of the game, chemistry, etc... etc ... will be a factor more and more as they grow - and it will make that zone defense more and more tenacious as they continue to log games.

I am definitely keeping a close eye on Coal Grove ... waiting for the Hornets to pick up some "quality" W's ... so far CG has lost to the only team they have played with a winning record (the 'peake 3-2) ...however I like the win over a surprise Treehugger team in Portsmouth West (2-3) who has played everyone tough ... this week has Coal Grove taking on 3-2 North Adams - looking forward to seeing the outcome of this one ...

I believe by year's end, Notre Dame will receive serious consideration for the Elite 8..

Wheelersburg will need some W's versus quality opponents before they should move up. At this point they have no quality wins (except maybe Ports West) and a loss vs a very young Trojan squad..

... the Burg travels to Lucasville Valley Tuesday night - definitely a quality opponent in my mind ... will be interesting to see if Coach Barrick's troops are able to control the tempo vs a very good Indians squad ... Notre Dame sits at #14 overall - with their performance last season they are on the radar every week ...

Floyd im a Coal Grove fan and i couldnt agree with you more! The only loss was against peake and in my opinion and probably a lot of other peoples opinions (grove and peake fans) would say that chesapeake escaped that game. But its high school basketball a win is a win right? I will say this, i know the hornets will surprise a lot of teams this year.

... bRuIsEr you are right - in ANY sport a win IS a win ... teams can only play and WIN vs the teams on their schedule ... 5-1 is a great start for Coal Grove , the Peake is on the schedule for a rematch, throw in 2 games vs a good Fairland ball club and you have Coal Grove being able to make a statement for moving up the Treehugger list ... as Dick Vitale says "just win baby" ...
