I just wanted to "stir the pot" seems to be working. I just love this kinda stuff!
I was born in this area, Pike county, that is why I followed the area's sports never had a favorite team just read everything, and came to my own conclusions. Sorry if that hits a sore spot with some of you. I found a team to pick on through my observations while reading articles on this forum, and I think I hit a nerve. If you don't like or agree with my opinions you don't have to read them.
My dad went to Wakefield high school near Piketon (school is long gone) and to college (Big Sandy Comm. College) in kentucky and studied mine engineering, hence the growing up in West Va. coal fields.
I agree with the success that Vinton has had in basketball, but should be time to do more , and at times should've done more; it is very gradifing to win. Maybe I look at my Alma mater and see all the state championships we have won, sometimes we had to beat those schools with DI players; it can be done. Oh! How sweet it is!

I agree Bulldog.....

In my research of this Viking squad. and several other Viking teams before them, they all have great middle school seasons and greatly underachieve in high school. What I have found is that this backsliding does not only happen in basketball. :aaaaa18
Well cable_hogue, for someone who apparently doesn't have much respect for Vinton County or Coach Combs, you sure do know quite a bit about their entire program. :? Doesn't seem like many posters on this thread agree with your thinking, or lack thereof.

State championship in West Virginia? Winning the TVC is a bigger accomplishment than that!

Vinton is a great program. 17 wins a year average is nothing to hang your head about but I get tired of hearing how hard the d2 sectional in se Ohio is. Go play d2 central district and see how many district titles anyone in se Ohio wins. Been some good teams, but keep it in perspective.

Excuse me, I could be wrong, but to win a state championship in West Virginia you only need to win 4 games? Doesn't the state champion come from a pool of 16? Some years you have to win 4 games (2 in the sectional and 2 in the districts) to get out of the districts into the regionals where you have to win 2 more to get to state and win two more to be state champ in Ohio? How does it work in West Virginia? I know Ohio has over 800 high schools, how many high schools are in West Virginia?

I don't mean to be glib or condescending, I genuinely curious.

Winning a State title in WV is akin to a District title in Ohio. Ask the PSouth wrestling team what happens when they come to Ohio and wrestle Lakewood St Ed. The 5 time defending champs can't finish in the top 10. Year in year out you'll see teams come across the river and get spanked. This season in Girls Basketball Fort Frye beat PSouth and South will make it to the State tourney. I doubt Fort Frye girls have the horses to make a run at a state title in Ohio. Although they are the favorites to win the East District.

Of course the central district is better - its why we have only seen 1 team (Chillicothe) actually make it to state.

that comparsion is a completely different argument ...

it was stated that the D2 sectional Vinton County is in - has been extremly tough (the last 10 years) ... that's all.

GOOD MORNING ALL! Long drive from Lima to Jackson with bad road conditions. Thought I would take a peek on here before I entered my slumber.
You could be correct Skid Farter. That is your opinion eventhough I don't agree with it; I do respect it.
I was lucky enough to play on a stae championship football team my senior year, and there is no other high school atheletic feeling that can equal that high. I don'care if it's in Alaska or the Great TVC Conference it's still a state champuionship, and no one can change my feelins about that. Jealously is a dangerous companion, Skid!

There are 55 counties in Wva, and most have only one or two public high schools, without counting I would say around 200 public high schools. Also a team must earn the right during regular season to play in state tourney.
I do agree that it is tougher to win consistantly at high school sports in Ohio. I made that statement in my first or second post on this forum. I would love to see a TVC team (other than Wahama West Virginia) win a state title in any sport.
I have just been stating my oppinion of some high school teams in the area. I am not stating I am right, and I may be wrong, but it is still my oppinion in which I am entitled to have and to express

First winning the TVC isn't that big a deal. 93 mentioned bulldogs being 18-1 and 12-0 and not getting out of the sectional. probably because of the weak schedule they played. Thay have a much tougher schedule this year and hopefully that will help come tournament time.

To the VC fans ... I just watched the 1988-1989 basketball game between Trimble and VC at the old Vinton County gymnasium ... what a cool inviroment, seating up above at one end of the court, stage on the other end ... lol ... I think they should have kept that old gym and maybe renovated it just for basketball games.

:)

the loss in the tounrey had nothing to do with scheduling ... Athens lost to Warren - a team they had beat in the regular season ...

Sounds to me like he is the part of the male body that some guys refer to as their snake. No need to disrespectful cableguy you are entitled to your opinion and it is valued here on SEOP. There are a lot of good and knowledgable people on here. They will love to talk sports with you but not if you are a jerk. Keep going the way you are going you will be talking to yourself.

93 - Logan Elm also made it to the state in the last 10 years... and they represented pretty well; actually had Dayton Thurgood Marshall beat only to lose in OT.
