GAHS winter athletes honored
Around 75 Gallia Academy High School winter athletes were honored Monday night during the GAHS Athletic Boosters 70th winter sports award ceremony in the GAHS gym at Centenary.
Numerous Blue Devil and Blue Angels were named All SEOAL Academic and Athletic All-Southeastern Ohio League honorees.
Halley Barnes was named the Winter Sports Scholastic Award winner. The award sponsored by the GAHS Academic Boosters and presented by Tim Warner, president of the GAHS Student Council.
Jim Clagg was named the Boys Scholastic Award winner. The award was sponsored by the GAHS Principal’s Fund and was presented by Tim Massie, principal.
Other major awards went to the following:
Most Valuable Wrestler—Cole Tawney, 120-pounder who finished 5th in the recent 2013 Ohio State Wrestling Tournament. The award was sponsored by the Brown Brothers Agency, Inc., and presented by Brent Simms, GAHS athletic director.
Most Valuable Girls Basketball Player—Kendra Barnes. The award was sponsored by Karen and Patty Sprague and presented by Karen Sprague.
Most Valuable Boys Basketball Player—Justin Bailey, the Blue Devils top scorer and rebounder this winter. The award was sponsored by Coaches Corner and presented by Josh Donley, assistant GAHS principal.
Prior to the awards ceremony, the coaches of respective teams—Valerie Jarrell, cheerleaders, Renee Barnes, girls basketball, Tom Moore, boys basketball and Scott Stanley, wrestling-- introduced members of their teams and presented them athletic and academic awards.
Athletic Director Brent Simms served as master of ceremonies.
