Dr. J. L. Guillotin....A French physician. Moved by mercy, he endorsed what he thought was a more humane method of execution than hanging. Ironically, the guillotine .....which he did not invent .....is now synonymous with needless and brutal slaughter.

Jean Nicot....French ambassador to Portugal in the 1550s. First brought tobacco to France. When nicotine was found in tobacco leaves in 1818, it was named after him.

Helen Porter "Melba" Mitchell. A celebrated opera singer whose professional name, Melba, was taken from her hometown of Melbourne, Australia. When she was dieting, she ate thin, crisp slices of bread now called Melba Toast. When she wasn't, she ate a desert called Peach Melba.

Sylvester Graham...A food faddist of the early 1800s. Advocating vegetarianism and high fiber, he was called "the poet of the bran meal and pumpkins" by Ralph Waldo Emerson . His followers were called Grahamites , and the food he recommended included graham crackers and graham flour.
