Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
Most of it looks very good. It's definately not easy to do these fairly but it looks overall very fair.
My biggest wonder was why Beau Justice was only 3rd team and trailed only Marc Carter in the entire district (all divisions included) at 23.9 ppg. Has there ever been a SE district player score over 20 a game and not make at least 2nd team?

I thought that was a little sketchy myself. Not sure why he was dropped to the third team when you have people who only averaged 10 above him.Ironman92 wrote:Most of it looks very good. It's definately not easy to do these fairly but it looks overall very fair.

Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
Obviously there are several other important factors considered but the AP guys can't see everyone and even if they do maybe they only see 1 or 2 games. D3 is loaded but I can't imagine any stat being considered more than ppg. I'll assume him only being a sophomore had nothing to do with it.

I'll give the Skanker Pine honorable mention to Salisbury. Since swords went out he's averaged 15ppg and stepped up big time when it mattered

Justice made 1st team on the Coaches' List. Not sure on who's I would take more seriously, maybe a mix of both?

It seems like the coaches list always looks a little better, which is a shame considering most of the all-state selections/awards are based on the AP.danicalifornia wrote:Justice made 1st team on the Coaches' List. Not sure on who's I would take more seriously, maybe a mix of both?
Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
The D-14 coaches list is exactly half the size of ours and is focused on your specific area, so it should look better to your eyes.TribeManiac10 wrote:It seems like the coaches list always looks a little better, which is a shame considering most of the all-state selections/awards are based on the AP.danicalifornia wrote:Justice made 1st team on the Coaches' List. Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
Sure. There are a few from each of the past 4 or 5 seasons that I could mention but I will just bring up two for fear of sounding as though I am choking on sour grapes. Blake Justice being named co-player of the year with Copley from Chesapeake(14ppg/and was the second best player on his own team) for the district two seasons ago would be the first. That season Blake led the state in scoring(27+ppg), led his team to a top 10 state ranking/#1 seed/league title/sectional title, became the second leading scorer in district history regardless of division with 2200+points, was one of only two division 1 signees(the other was Ragland from Chillicothe), and was the southeast's lone D3 representative in the Ohio/Kentucky all star game which are decided by the coaches yet took a back seat to Copley in the AP. Few would have argued that he was not far and away the best player in the district that year. I would also bring the aforementioned argument involving his younger brother Beau(arguably a top 10 or 11 player in the district already as a sophomore) who averaged 24ppg(Second in the district regardless of division, 0.2 pts behind the district player of the year Zac Carter) this season on one of the top 5 division 3 teams in the district yet was voted to the 3rd team(41 players mentioned before him). Could you elaborate on the thought process behind this one or did he just receive a handicap for his age? Also, how many regular season games did you personally watch him play this year? I'm guessing not many, and that I believe is one of the inherent flaws of AP voting. There is little media representation at the fringes of the district and there is a bias given to teams that do have it, whether it is subconscious or not. I realize that putting a concise list of names together from areas as far ranging as Lynchburg to Athens can be difficult and that there will always be omissions due to that fact but the coaches list gives a better representation of the talent in the district from people who are routinely around that talent. I also know arguing on a sports forum is like beating your head against a wall hoping to break through when it comes to changing a process but it does offer a pretty good outlet to vent.bdubya wrote:The D-14 coaches list is exactly half the size of ours and is focused on your specific area, so it should look better to your eyes.TribeManiac10 wrote:It seems like the coaches list always looks a little better, which is a shame considering most of the all-state selections/awards are based on the AP.danicalifornia wrote:Justice made 1st team on the Coaches' List. Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
How one interprets any pole depends on their perspective. The AP poll which is from journalists is fairly independent. My only concern and experience with coaches polls is that there's so much political influence on the poles that sometimes unfortunately the results can be jaded because Of what might be perceived as a buddy system or in other words you scratch my back and I'll scratch your back. Obviously neither pole is a perfect indication of how individual players or teams are actually Performing, but that's just how the system We have has always worked. Take it or leave it.
Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
In general, you can't just go by points per game. You have to look at competition played against, what goes into scoring that many points, such as how many shots you have and other things.

I agree to a certain extent. However, I also believe none of those factors would go anywhere in changing my opinion in this case.bman wrote:In general, you can't just go by points per game. 1. The AP vote is distributed only to daily newspapers. How many of those do you have around Peebles? Maybe you guys should REALLY support one to make it grow.TribeManiac10 wrote:Sure. I also know arguing on a sports forum is like beating your head against a wall hoping to break through when it comes to changing a process but it does offer a pretty good outlet to vent.
2. I cannot elaborate on the choice selection this year, as I did not attend the meeting. The list actually stretches from Eastern Brown to Marietta, Fairfield Union to Ironton.
3. Blake ever make it to state? Copley did, and he led his team to a top 10 state ranking/#1 seed/league title/sectional title/ - plus a district title/regional title.
4. Maybe you should do some creative scheduling to assure that AP voters can see you. We're not coming to you if our work is here.
It's not a perfect system, but the pieces are in place where they belong.
It also appears that you have only two small examples to give, both of whom attend/attended Peebles. So in other words, if Peebles doesn't get exactly what you think they should have, anything and everything else is automatically better.
Solid venting.

Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
Oh I have a lot more but I felt it relevant to add just give a few quick examples from a team in my immediate area. You're right, what Chesapeake was able to do the year before should have determined placement the next season. My original statement was an opinion of which system gives a clearer picture of talent in an area not necessarily a debate over the specifics of who should have won what. I have no intention of turning this into a three page mudslinging thread that goes nowhere. Also, its pretty flimsy to specify borders that are a little wider than the arbitrary example given to support your claims. Excuse me, i'm off to form my own AP affiliate.bdubya wrote:1. Now that is solid venting coming from a person affiliated with the newspaper.

Re: 2012-13 AP ALL SOUTHEAST DISTRICT TEAMS
So it looks like the Justice kid only made 3rd team because his parents chose to live and send him to Peebles schools and Peebles is in Adams County and Adams County doesn't have an everyday paper? Looks like tribe10 has his answer on why the kid that scored 2200 points didn't win player of the year.
How is tribe10 supposed to support a paper to make it an everyday paper?
Lynchburg Clay is farther west than Eastern Brown.
