Re: River Valley Coaching Search
Coach Hill started a youth program. I'm not sure how successful it was. I know some of the people that ran the league were very questionable choices. My advice to you is to educate the community about sports. This is an illiterate school system and community when it comes to sports. Most of them have never seen sports outside of Gallia county. They are a community that would rather tear a program down then support it.
Re: River Valley Coaching Search
Starting a youth program and implementing and running one are totally different. Basic fundamentals and guidlines must be set and followed for a school to be successful year in and year out! It all starts with the younger kids and not everybody understands that.

first off he loves south Gallia . being from bidwell maybe elementary and junior high but he walked the halls with me at Gallia academy. so playing the bidwell card is know good. larry has a fine job in Mercerville, he loves the kids, he has the respect from his peers plus his kids are rebels. he isn't going to river valley

Why would Larry leave SG? they love him there and he honestly has a decent program that can compete. RV is a circus. Honestly, SG is way more appealing IMO.91blue14 wrote:galliagrad74 wrote:Larry Howell would be a good fit. He is from bidwell and his wife graduated from RV. oak hill was worse than rv the year befre norm got there and rv beat norm in his 1st year at oak hillPrep Expert wrote:It's wishful thinking for anyone on this forum to think that Coach Lafon and Coach Piersin would encourage any one that they know to apply for the RV job. If anything they would be advising this person to not apply for the job. Why would they encourage someone to apply for a job where there is absolutely no chance of being successful?
to carry a name like " prep expert" your pretty clueless, rv has had 2 really talented classes enter hs the past 2 yrs and has a really good group of incoming freshmen this year with parents who understand sports these teams have all been successful in jr high and the going to be jr's were very good as freshmen. i hear many of them are going to come back and play this year also they have several kids playing organized travel ball this spring which is a big deal
so to say it is a no win situation is well.... pretty dumb! no! really dumb your a rv basher plain and simple
ga has won maybe 2 or 3 more games than rv over the past couple years and sg had the worst jr high teams in southern ohio this past year.... get a freakin clue
i think with the right hire ga and rv can be successful it's going to take the right mind set and patience
have you ever tried to get buddy league kids and parents ,coaches to buy into a program? imho the tri county area the buddy league is horrible and the varsity teams reflect it
Re: River Valley Coaching Search
So your saying that 2 classes that went about 500 in jr high are talented classes? I've saw those kids play. There is decent talent there. I didn't see any kids with the talent that oak hill had with Jesse Slone and Westin Hale. I don't think those kids lost a jr high game at oak hill. I'm not an RV basher. I'm just realistic.
Re: River Valley Coaching Search
When the new coach comes in weather it be me or somebody else the first thing they need to do is hold a community pep rally for all students and parents to show them a sense of pride in Raider basketball and that they are there to get the train on the tracks. I've played against RV and most of the time they have the athletes there was just no sense of pride. These kids need to know they can win immediately! If I get the opportunity my first week of practice will be open to the public so they can see the direction I want the program to go in. I will be right in the middle of the drills demonstrating and participating with them. You can't just be their coach you need to be able to get on their level also!

Wow I haven't been on in a while and so many posts to respond 2!
Prep Expert- Hill didn't "start" a youth program at RV. He attempted to take over a youth program that had been running for 30 years and hurt it greatly. By alienating many people who gave their time and support to the kids of the community he used his Hitler attitude to push them away.
Defensivewins- I like some of the ideas you have about the community but I'm not sure you understand what you are up against at rv in regards to an administartion who absolutely despises sports and parents that are difficult to deal with at times. I wish you luck but some people might say you should start by having thick skin and staying off Preps?
Bevo- oh bevo, bevo.... Today you are a River Valley fan and tomorrow GA and the next day whoever suits you. What a flip flopper.... And you said "talented classes" you do realize that rv has suffered from numerous talented kids coming from jr high into high school and either leaving or not playing due to the previous staff right? Look at the kids that walk the halls at rv and DONT play basketball or sports in general, its sad. Athletic teams should be a source of pride at any school. The fact is that hill just didn't care who played and refused to try to keep/get players to come out. ...... How'd that attitude work out for him?
So here are my thoughts.
1. Biddy league was never a problem until Hill came but now rv will need someone who cares to rebuild it
2. Junior high was never a problem (reference OVC championships in recent years)
3. Somebody mentioned Howell, he's not going anywhere, why in the world would he leave for this mess? plus SG is going to be good the next few years
4. Why have we not heard Nances name more? He is an in house guy that has had success as far as win % and they kids absolutely adore him as do many of the parents!

You have to have thick skin no matter where you go! You can't keep everybody happy! I'm not on here bashing RV or responding to negative comments I just posted on here to let everybody know I have applied with all intentions to right the ship and I have nothing but the best interests of RV at heart!

Re: River Valley Coaching Search
Great post. Except I don't put as much of a responsibility of this mess on Jordan as you do, but I agree it's a mess. Also, how valuable can these so called "players" be if they haven't played since junior High? Finally, the absolute best point in your post is about Coach Nance. This guy has gotten shafted so many times. He should be asked to take this program over. I had the pleasure of playing for him. He has to be the best option. I just don't understand it. His ability to not only coach, but deal with attitudes and kids in general is unbelievable. He is also a great volleyball coach and already got the shaft for that. It's time he gets a chance. He is the ONLY consistent winner as a basketball coach RV has. Why go outside when you've got an already respected guy on the inside?kidsarewhatmatters wrote:Wow I haven't been on in a while and so many posts to respond 2!

The youth league programs have always been a joke. How many league championships have they produced? They needed addressed.

kidsarewhatmatters and blizzard man are perfect examples as to why RV basketball struggles year in and year out......to suggest that Nance should be a Head Coach is the most laughable thing i have ever heard......nothing against him as a person but he has NOWHERE NEAR the knowledge needed to be a varsity basketball coach. Based solely on your opinion about Nance, it shows that neither of you have ANY CLUE about what it takes to be a varsity coach and run a basketball program. I feel sorry for RV.

Ok johnny dumbo, why doesn't he have the knowledge? Give examples as to why he isn't ready. He played the gam, studies the game, watches the game, and has coached the game for a long time. Let's hear some reason behind your statement wise one.johnny ringo wrote:kidsarewhatmatters and blizzard man are perfect examples as to why RV basketball struggles year in and year out......to suggest that Nance should be a Head Coach is the most laughable thing i have ever heard......nothing against him as a person but he has NOWHERE NEAR the knowledge needed to be a varsity basketball coach. You're right. Let's try the same failed formula we always do. Bring in an outsider. You're not going to argue because you have no basis for you rubbish. Therefore, you are the one who doesn't know what you're talking about.johnny ringo wrote:not gonna argue with you.....you simply have no idea what you are talking about. I'll leave it at that.

Let's see here..... So you and Bevo were big Jordan Hill nut swingers for the past few years due to his "knowledge of the game". That resulted in 9-12, 5-16, 3-20 seasons, so using your own logic the guy that you backed was completely and totally unsuccessful and actually regressed EVERY season he coached! Kids defected and/or quit altogether and the program that was having trouble already, spiraled into one of the worst in the state.
Now whos scenario is the laughable one?
