South Gallia host River Valley in the first ever meeting between these two Gallia County Local School District high schools. For those who don't understand the significance of this game I will give you a little history. The old four Gallia county high schools (Hannan Trace, Southwestern, North Gallia and Kyger Creek)consolidated to form River Valley HS in the early 90's. The old Kyger Creek building was used to house the newly formed high school. Of course KC was tucked away in the extreme far northeast corner of the county but it was the only building that could hold that many students. To say the least and as expected the consolidation did not go over well especially in the old Hannan Trace and Southwestern attendance areas where the drive one way to school was up to 35 miles. After 4 years of the consolidation and the district bleeding students in the south end of the county to Fairland, Gallipolis, Symmes Valley and Oak Hill the board of education voted to split River Valley and to reopen the old Hannan Trace building as South Gallia high school. This did not go over well in the north end of the county. People felt it was a step backwards. In many ways it was but the geography of the county and having Gallipolis City schools sitting right in the middle made it the option that made the most sense. There was no way to ever build a central high school for the district unless it involved the city district and politically it will not happen unless the state of Ohio forces it to happen.
After the split and the VERY bitter feelings that resulted a decision was made that these 2 schools would not be allowed to compete athletically against one another. Another reason is River Valley is much larger than SG. The two have bumped into one another in golf and track but that was it. The district decided to allow the two football teams to play in a jamboree game each year to raise money for the new football fields and that was the beginning of the end of the rule not allowing the 2 schools to play. During those games there have been zero incidents involving fans. This year the girls have met in volleyball and girls basketball. But tonight's game in boys basketball game will really be the "coming out party" for this rivalry. It should be fun and a packed house.
Good luck to both teams although I am wishing a little more luck to the Rebels.

Thank you for that! I've always wondered how RV was up in D2 for a short time and that explained it well. I hope the game goes well and is just a clean, tight game.RebelCat wrote:South Gallia host River Valley in the first ever meeting between these two Gallia County Local School District high schools. Thanks for the history lesson, RebelCat. Really cool tidbit of high school sports history. Let us know if they did anything ceremonial or noteworthy for the inaugural matchup?RebelCat wrote:South Gallia host River Valley in the first ever meeting between these two Gallia County Local School District high schools.
