COAL GROVE — The big guns were firing, but it was the little guns who hit some key targets.

Jacy Jones and Emily Compliment combined for 36 points and their teammates made key contributions as the Coal Grove Lady Hornets beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 52-42 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We needed some kids to step up and play for us. Jones gets a lot of attention and Compliment is drawing more and more,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

“(Summer) Willis came in and knocked down shots and rebounded. (Kaylee) Beals came in and gave us some quality minutes with some drives to the basket.”

Compliment had 19 points while Jones had 17 points and 7 assists for Coal Grove (6-4, 4-1). Willis grabbed 11 rebounds.

Kaylee Curry scored 17 points for Chesapeake (6-3, 2-3). Atiya Spaulding and Natalie Hall scored 9 points each.

Compliment hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 9-8 lead. Spaulding had 4 points for the Lady Panthers.

Willis had 6 of her 8 points and Compliment also had 6 points in the second quarter as the Lady Hornets extended their lead to 23-17 at the half.

Curry scored 8 points in the third quarter as Chesapeake got within 32-30.

But Jones hit a 3-pointer and converted 8 of 8 from the foul line in the fourth quarter as Coal Grove outscored Chesapeake 22-12 and pulled away to the win.

Curry had half of the Lady Panthers’ points.

“We are understanding to have a better shot selection,” said Roach.

On Thursday, Coal Grove visits Ironton and Chesapeake hosts Fairland.

Chesapeake 8 9 13 12 = 42

Coal Grove 9 14 9 22 = 52

South Webster pressed hard the first half and maybe early in the 3rd quarter. Backed off after that and started putting JV in early 4th quarter.

I hope they didn't press until the end of the third quarter. They were obviously up big before then. Call off the dogs and win with class.
