Wendys Holliday classic returns to Portsmouth
Re: Wendys Holliday classic returns to Portsmouth
The cavs will not win 5 games this year. This team is lost without tommy bolte. Cavs only give up 51 pts to one of the top d1 teams in the state in gahanna Lincoln yet give up 66 to minford.

Minford has a really nice ball team. I've seen them play a few times this year I really like the Shepard boy. That young man knows how to play the game. Always seems to be in the right place at the right time.bronc21 wrote:The cavs will not win 5 games this year. This team is lost without tommy bolte. Re: Wendys Holliday classic returns to Portsmouth
Minford looked pretty good tonight but the 1-2-2 was very porous up top; obvious adjustment by Chillicothe to immediately push the ball in to the foul line and/or cut the guy down the lane when he passed to the wing. Top 3 have got to be more cognizant of the cutter and the rotations need to be made. Players can't take plays off in this defense or it doesn't work! Many times cutter went right by a guy who had no idea he was behind him (ball-you-man basics) A good mid-range shooter would have hurt Minford badly tonight. Since my last post got deleted for some reason gonna say it again; why not move bottom 2 on the 1-2-2 to the top(Alley/Kelley) and try Rowe and Gullion on the bottom as an experiment with Shepherd up top. Rowe and Gullion quicker to the baseline shot and Kelley and Alley longer in the passing lanes. Also gives you a "big" rotating down for backside rebounding and also to fill the inside gaps when the ball goes to the same side wing. Just a thought? Minford rebounding was terrible at times due to not boxing out. Guard box outs are non-existent and at times looks like a volleyball game out there on the boards. One guy is boxing out on most shots and that's not good enough. Still would like to see a continuity offense used (even though I like alot of the play calling I think you'll need it in tourney); at times the offense stagnates when the set play doesn't get the quick hit. Or if you're gonna use set plays most of the time segue right into another play if the first one gets stopped. In other words, play A is followed by play B if play A gets stopped?? The 5 man is by far the best passer on the team and Minford is utilizing that to their advantage, especially the past two outings. Still think team passing has got to improve! Willingness has a lot to do with it. Hope to see them continue to develop the wing players to go into the post because they are going to have mismatches many times this season and need to make stronger moves inside. I honestly think this team could survive simply on post mismatches but post entry is still very weak except from your 5 man (and he can't pass to himself unfortunately). This needs to improve if they are to make that long run in the tournament. You can see the wing looking occasionally but not pulling the trigger or having their butt to the basket and not in position to make the pass when it needs made. Minford has a great opportunity for a deep run into the tourney but need more balance in the offense and continue to improve the defense. I love the 1-2-2 with this team if they can plug some of the holes up top (see above?). I think the staff is utilizing the players well according to their strengths but would like to see every guy on that team take advantage of mismatches. Seems as if a couple of players have all the plays run their direction. There's mainly one guy who can create his own shot so would like to see more balanced play calling; gonna need it eventually. The 3 ball was less utilized tonight but when you aren't hitting them that tends to happen. Still think we need some shooter to knock some of those down but not enough inside to out. If your 5 man is going to be your primary passer on many plays, then run a set where he is passing inside to out to the shooters and they'll knock those down. Last two games I've seen some of the better team basketball I've seen at Minford in a long time and I say kudos to the staff!!! This also is a must to make a deep tourney run. Minford is very very solid this year with every player a threat to score. If this continues and they can plug the holes in the 1-2-2 there's some great days ahead!!!biggdowgg wrote:Minford will go a very long way in the tourney

burg has no height and no depth this year. Not many shooters to worry about. They will be lucky to break even this year. Not much talk on hear like football season? Minford should be hands down the favorite to win the SOC 2 with Valley second, West 3rd, Waverly 4th Burg 5th.

SSU should take a lesson on how to run and price a tournament. At $5 a pop ,a full house all night long plus the concessions.

Basketball is a cyclical sport. Valley last couple of years. Minford this year maybe next but then it will be burgs turn because of what they have coming up. Burg does not have height, but they will compete eventually. Look at their run last year. How about just enjoying minfords good team instead of burg bashing. Great turnout in Portsmouth...should be a fun night with Chillicothe and Portsmouth ending the Classic...hopefully Chillicothe plays better than last night and we get a good rivalry game

Re: Wendys Holliday classic returns to Portsmouth
I heard Coach Collins on the radio this morning and he said that it looks like Sky Oliver will be okay after banging knees with a Wheelersburg player........he was held out of the 4th quarter as a precaution.
Very impressed by the large turnout for the return of the Classic. Biggest crowd I have seen at PHS gym in quite a while. Much larger attendance than for the Shawnee State event, and that probably is because of the $5 ticket price for all games. Very smart of the PHS athletic department to do this.

Agree with your assessment wobycat other than the "typical" comment. Typical out of those who don't really want to talk about basketball. Not everyone is looking to trash other schools. I support all the SOC schools especially if they are in tournament. However, you are right; Burg has a good group coming soon. Talent is cyclical and some of the kids are playing basketball as a secondary sport, having more success in other sports. I like it that Ater is playing his seniors though. Reward those who have put their time in! Too many coaches turn their back on the upperclassmen. High school sports are better when you don't. Let the cycles happen as you said. Reward kids who stick with the program! Bringing those younger kids in this year might be tempting but it doesn't suddenly put you where you'll be anyway in a couple of years. It also makes for better community support IMO. What is also cyclical are what sports a school dominates in. Can't discount the rise of Burg baseball making that sport the primary sport of many of the athletes there now. This team will improve and might surprise some come tourney time. Really thought they'd take the air out of the ball last night against PHS. They didn't but still competed hard.wobycat wrote:Basketball is a cyclical sport. Valley last couple of years. Oldschool,
I would have been fine with the comment had it been on a minford burg thead. Bash away I say. But that one was a sidebar. Minford should win the SOC easily and be a contender for regional.
