Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
IT'S HARD ENOUGH FIELDING A FOOTBALL TEAM AS IT IS. AND WE JUST MISSED D6 BY 2 BOYS. SO UNLESS WE HAVE SOME BIGGER CLASSES COMING WE'LL MOSR DEFINATELY DROP WHEN THEY DO THE NUMBERS AGAIN.
Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
I can see that happening but the transfer rule will affect Ironton numbers. The talent level has dropped a great deal at Ironton and moving to the OVC should help Vass and his staff. You're Tiger Bait wrote:IT'S HARD ENOUGH FIELDING A FOOTBALL TEAM AS IT IS. Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
Existing and new OVC fans should celebrate the addition of Ironton and Portsmouth and eventually Gallia Academy. Opportunity abounds for improved competition and quality in all sports and in all schools.

Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
Fairland and Chesapeake are currently the only OVC schools that sponsor wrestling. Gallia is the only future member that sponsors wrestling.2trap_4ever wrote:Would love to see wrestling in the conference before soccer.
I was a freshman when Fairland brought back their wrestling program as a club activity at first to gauge interest and teach the sport, then my sophomore year (maybe junior?) they began competing as a varsity sport.
I'm not sure what OHSAA regulations exist in terms of a certain brand of mats that must be purchased, but that seems to be the biggest cost associated with starting a program.

I was all for this thinking the league may vastly improve. Who was I kidding? This is terrible combo of teams and will not give points or be exciting.

Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
I was against it at first, now I've warmed up to it some. it's just not football though, it's every sport. still would have rather been in the soc. but it is what it is. but frankly the football schedule just seems so, so different.
I really wonder about points.

Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
By the look of Ironton's schedule they will have to win every game just to get a 5 seed. 4plus games yielding very little in way of points. (Portsmouth, Fairland, South Point, Chesapeake and Rock Hill) Granted Portsmouth will get better in the next few year's. But it will be tough for Ironton to catch a home playoff game in this conference. It's very weak. If they drop a game (ex.Burg) They could miss it entirely.
Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
South Point was a power house in wrestling for a long time. Even in the 90's always had some stud wrestlers would be great to see that program brought back.

Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
Ironton may need to schedule up outside the OVC.
A lot of people talk about travel cost and time.........if so the Tigers might have a problem.
If your school is to the far west of southeastern Ohio or far north of southeastern Ohio you just might have a better chance to schedule up. Unless you want to go out of state.

Re: THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEW OVC 2015
Out of state is closer for most OVC schools than going up North.
Look at Fairland, they have a KY powerhouse, and a WV school. Coal Grove plays Fairview in KY. Chesapeake played perennial state champ Wayne, WV for years, and beat them a few times as well. South Point plays Boyd County, KY (a big school, just across the river).
Actually, the OVC used to have WV schools in the conference back in the day.
So, it is possible for an OVC school to schedule big schools close to home to get the points.
But again, this move is more about the overall athletic departments. I think that once the football kids, and boosters at the OVC schools see how serious the kids and coaches at Ironton and Portsmouth prepare for football, it will make a difference in years to come, eventually leading to parity and a stronger football league
Also, I'm sure the kids in Coal Grove are looking forward to the opportunity of competing with Ironton and Portsmouth on a regular basis for a conference title. If they would have been able to play Ironton and Portsmouth in conference this year, then Coal Grove would have been in the playoffs, imo. So, I think it is an overall win for current members as well as the newbies.
