It looks like Brian Kidd is the new football coach for Coal Grove this year.

it's so cool to be talking football again. this should be an exciting year for OVC football. with new members ironton and Portsmouth coming in. and the gallipolis blue devils coming in next year.new coaches, new rivalries, huge crowds. I'm glad the grovers got their man. and it'll be here before you know it.

Since we are getting closer to the season thought I would look closer at Coal Groves schedule and review what each team did last year:
Pleasant 10 wins 0 loses 38.8 ppg (lost in second round of playoffs to Liberty-Benton)
Valley 8 wins 2 loses 35.5 ppg (lost to Kirtland in State Semi-Final)
Ports. West 7 wins 3 loses 27.5 ppg (lost to Bishop Hartley in first round)
@ South Point 2 wins 8 loses 18.5 ppg
@ Rock Hill 2 wins 8 loses 15.7 ppg (low turnout and injury bug did not help)
Fairview 6 wins 4 loses 35.2 ppg (lost to Raceland second round Ky. Playoffs)
Ironton 7 wins 2 loses 32 ppg ( lost in second round of playoffs to Wheelersburg)
@Portsmouth 3 wins 7 loses 27.9 ppg (how to you almost avg. 28 points a game and only have 3 wins)
Fairland 2 wins 8 loses 21.8 ppg
Chesapeake 6 wins 4 loses 16.9 ppg (shoutout 4 times last year, will have to pick up the offense this season)

Now I know these stats don’t mean anything now, but I like to think it might be a good barometer of what the Grove will be seeing this year.

Also to compare these teams to what the Hornets did last year
Coal Grove 7 wins 3 loses 34.3 ppg (losing a majority of the offense that scored those points, plus the coaching staff, kinda doesn’t make sense when you think about it)

Chesapeake is now Division VI with Coal Grove and actually 3 boys less that Coal Grove at 134 Boys. Rock Hill was 2 boys short of D-VI with 151 Boys. Chesapeake was the only change in the OVC.

It looks like everyone took a hit except for Portsmouth who increased about 30 boys [IIRC their enrollment prior to this year was in the 170s.]

It's surprising to me that Fairland had such a drop considering the incoming freshman class (2019) is larger than the outgoing senior class (2015.)

PREDICT THE BIGGEST UPSET IN OVC FOOTBALL THIS YEAR. I'M GOING TO SAY COAL GROVE OVER PORTSMOUTH.

That is no where near an upset.

I actually think Portsmouth will be much improved this year. Ironton will run away with the OVC conference because frankly, the rest of the league is just not that good.

I think Portsmouth beats CG and finishes in 2nd place.

Even though I think it was a good decision for CG to go a different direction with coaching, it will not be easy for Kidd to have a ton of success this year. Next year maybe.

In no way would that be considered an upset. Portsmouth is a question mark heading into 2015, new coach, health, will the defense tackle and defend, lots of questions. Im hoping for something better, just not obtomistic it happens in one year.
